The Seiko SRQ029J1 is a 1,000-piece Prospex limited edition released in December 2019 to mark the 50th anniversary of Seiko’s 1969 automatic-chronograph milestone. It pairs a panda-style dial with automatic Caliber 8R48, a 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph, and a 41 mm steel case. Its 2019 European launch price and a price later displayed on Seiko’s Singapore page are regional reference points—not a current universal resale value.
What is the Seiko SRQ029J1?
Seiko’s historical product page identifies the watch as the “Seiko Automatic Chronograph 50th Anniversary Limited Edition SRQ029J1,” part of the Prospex collection. The anniversary refers to the 1969 launch of Caliber 6139, not to the age of the SRQ029 itself. Seiko describes Caliber 6139 as one of the world’s first automatic chronographs to use a column wheel and vertical clutch. The SRQ029 was made in a limited run of 1,000 and became available in December 2019, according to Seiko’s product history.
Seiko’s historical account captures the significance it assigns to the mechanism: “Today, the vertical clutch and the column wheel are prerequisites in a high grade chronograph; in 1969, this was an important advance in an automatic wristwatch.” The statement appears on Seiko’s Chronograph Historical Collection page.
The reference appears as SRQ029J1 in the official product title and URL, and is often shortened to SRQ029. Some secondary-market listings also use SBEC005; a different label alone does not establish that a listing is a different watch. Check the case reference, photographs, and seller documentation before treating a listing as the same model.

What does the SRQ029 look like?
Seiko says the design takes cues from a “Panda” chronograph: two black subdials contrast with a white dial. The brand also points to the hairline finish, orange-tipped chronograph seconds hand, applied hour markers, and tachymeter bezel markings as links to its historical design inspiration. The SRQ029 adds a third subdial for running seconds, along with a box-shaped sapphire crystal and Zaratsu-polished case surfaces. These are Seiko’s descriptions of the design; they do not establish that every detail is identical to one specific original reference.
What movement and functions does it have?
The SRQ029 uses Seiko Caliber 8R48, an automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. Seiko lists an approximate 45-hour power reserve and 34 jewels. The movement’s chronograph has 30-minute and 12-hour counters; the watch also has stop seconds and a date display. Seiko’s official specifications list accuracy of +25 to -15 seconds per day.

- Powered by light energy, with no battery change required, this timepiece automatically receives radio signals to precisely adjust the time and calendar and has a 6-month power reserve once fully charged
- Case Diameter: 44.5mm
- The intricately patterned black dial with gold accents features a chronograph, radio signal reception display, power reserve indicator, date calendar, and LumiBrite hands and markers
- The angular two-tone stainless steel case is paired with an integrated bracelet and includes a sapphire crystal and cabochon crown
- Water-resistant to 10 bar, 100 meters (330 feet)
Seiko describes the 8R48 as using a column wheel and vertical clutch. A three-pointed hammer and heart-shaped cam synchronize the chronograph hands during flyback reset. Seiko says the caliber was first created in 2014. The flyback-reset architecture is a movement design detail; the functions explicitly listed for this model are the 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters, stop seconds, and date.

| Power reserve | Approximately 45 hours |
| Jewels | 34 |

| Case back | See-through screw case back, limited-edition marking, and serial number |
These are Seiko’s listed specifications for the SRQ029J1. The 41 mm diameter is only one part of fit: 16 mm thickness and 47 mm lug-to-lug affect how the watch sits on a wrist, and those dimensions do not guarantee comfort for every wearer. The 20 mm lug distance can help when searching for an optional strap, but Seiko lists the model with a bracelet and does not verify the fit or quality of aftermarket straps.

What did it cost, and what is a fair price now?
Seiko’s 2019 European press release gave the SRQ029 a recommended retail price of €3,700. A Singapore product page displayed SGD 5,466.70 when accessed in 2026. These are different regional and time references, not directly comparable prices or evidence of current local stock. Seiko’s historical material establishes the December 2019 release, not present availability.
The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable current average resale price. WatchCharts’ SRQ029 overview frames valuation around condition, delivery contents, and location; one surfaced sold listing was £1,180. That individual transaction is an example, not a standard value or verified appraisal. For a useful comparison, match the same reference in the same currency and region, and compare condition and what is included.

- Check whether the listing is for SRQ029J1/SRQ029 and review the case reference and photos.
- Compare bracelet presence and condition, box, papers, service records, and any other stated contents.
- Factor in location and seller provenance; a single sold listing does not establish a market-wide price.
Seiko’s region-specific product page and 2019 European release provide useful price history, while WatchCharts’ overview is a third-party valuation reference, not an official appraisal. None of these sources proves what a specific watch is worth today without its condition, contents, and market context.

There is no standardized comparison against named alternatives in the cited specifications, so assess a specific competing model using verified, current information for that watch rather than assuming the SRQ029’s limited-edition status makes it superior.
