Seiko Updates Its 62MAS-Inspired Prospex Diver With the SPB451, SPB453 and SPB455

Seiko’s SPB451, SPB453 and SPB455 share a 6R55 movement, 72-hour reserve and 300m diver’s water resistance. Compare their styling, the SPB455 centenary-edition strap, and the dated regional launch details.

The Seiko SPB451, SPB453 and SPB455 are March 2024 updates to the Prospex 1965 Heritage Diver’s Watch family, based on the SPB143 design inspired by Seiko’s original 62MAS diver. All three share a 6R55 automatic movement with a 72-hour power reserve, 300m diver’s water resistance, and a 40.0mm case. The key differences are dial styling and the SPB455’s centenary-edition treatment and additional recycled-polyester strap.

Seiko announced the range on 7 March 2024 and said availability would begin in June 2024. Those are launch details, not confirmation of current stock or pricing.

A modern 62MAS-inspired design

Seiko describes the 1965 Heritage Diver’s range as based on its SPB143 design, which draws vintage-style inspiration from the company’s original diver’s watch. Collectors commonly call that original watch the 62MAS.

The SPB451, SPB453 and SPB455 are modern Prospex watches, not original 1965 pieces. Their design references the earlier diver, while their materials, construction and specifications are contemporary.

Casio Men's MDV106-1AV 200M Black Dive Watch (MDV106-1A)

  • Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
  • Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
  • Anti-reverse bezel
  • Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)

What changed in the updated range

Seiko presents the redesign as more compact, with a 40.0mm case, 46.4mm lug-to-lug length and 13.0mm thickness. Other headline updates include the 6R55 movement, a 72-hour power reserve and 300m diver’s water resistance.

  • Case dimensions: 40.0mm diameter, 46.4mm lug-to-lug and 13.0mm thick.
  • Movement: Calibre 6R55 automatic, with a specified 72-hour power reserve.
  • Water resistance: 300m diver’s.
  • Date position: between 4 and 5 o’clock; Seiko says this leaves more area for Lumibrite on the dial.
  • Bracelet: stainless steel with a three-fold clasp, secure lock, push-button release and extender.

These are manufacturer specifications and design descriptions. The available research does not establish independent accuracy tests, wrist-comfort results or dive testing.

SPB451 vs. SPB453 vs. SPB455

Model Dial and accents Edition and strap details Shared specifications
SPB451 Blue Standard model; stainless-steel bracelet 6R55 automatic, 72-hour reserve, 300m diver’s water resistance
SPB453 Black Standard model; stainless-steel bracelet 6R55 automatic, 72-hour reserve, 300m diver’s water resistance
SPB455 Charcoal-grey with gold-coloured accents Brand-centenary special edition; includes an additional recycled-polyester strap made using Seichu braiding 6R55 automatic, 72-hour reserve, 300m diver’s water resistance

The principal choice is styling and edition. Seiko identifies the SPB455 as a centenary special edition; the official evidence does not describe it as limited. Seiko says its additional strap is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. It also reports that the strap’s tensile strength is nearly four times that of its regular fabric straps, based on the company’s own research, not an independent test.

Case, crystal and dive-watch hardware

Seiko lists a stainless-steel case with super-hard coating. The dimensions are 40.0mm across, 46.4mm from lug to lug and 13.0mm thick. The crystal is curved sapphire with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface.

TEKMAGIC 10 ATM Digital Submersible Unisex adult Diving Watch 100m Water Resistant Swimming Sport Wristwatch Luminous LCD Screen with Stopwatch Alarm Function
  • The waterproof level of this watch has reached 10 ATM waterproof, which can work normally at a depth of 100 meters (330ft) underwater. It is not only suitable for wearing in water activities such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, surfing, rowing, water skiing, but also suitable for wearing in daily life and outdoor sports, such as jogging, hiking, climbing, cycling, etc.
  • The built-in stopwatch and timer function of the watch can meet the precise timing needs of exercise and sports competitions.
  • The dual time zone display function will make your trips more convenient; 12/24 hour format display can meet the time reading habits of different people.
  • Support multiple useful functions, such as: alarm clock, hourly chime, calendar and back light.
  • The watch battery is replaceable. If you find that the watch is not working or the text on the display is not clear, please replace the watch battery in time.

The watches have a screw-down crown and screw case back. Seiko specifies 300m diver’s water resistance and describes this as a first for its Prospex non-saturation diver’s watches. LumiBrite is applied to the hands and indexes; Seiko says moving the date to between 4 and 5 o’clock leaves more area for Lumibrite.

The 6R55 movement and three-day reserve

Seiko specifies the automatic Calibre 6R55 with the following details:

  • Power reserve: 72 hours, or three days.
  • Frequency: 21,600 vibrations per hour.
  • Jewels: 24.

Seiko’s 7 March 2024 announcement says: “Each watch is powered by one of Seiko’s latest in-house movements, Calibre 6R55, which has a power reserve that extends to 72 hours, or three full days.” This is the manufacturer’s stated reserve, not an independent test result. The research does not provide an independent timing test or verified accuracy result for these watches.

Why the date moved

The date appears between 4 and 5 o’clock rather than interrupting the 3 o’clock index. Seiko says the placement leaves more area for Lumibrite on the dial. The date’s position is a visible distinction from designs that place the window at 3 o’clock.

Bracelet and strap considerations

The stainless-steel bracelet has a three-fold clasp with secure lock, push-button release and an extender, according to Seiko. The SPB455 additionally comes with a recycled-polyester strap made using the Seichu braiding technique.

The research dossier does not establish lug width or verify compatibility with any third-party strap. Check the exact watch reference and strap fit before buying an aftermarket option; do not assume that a strap will fit based on appearance alone.

SPB451: the blue model

The SPB451 has a blue dial and is the blue option among the standard models. It shares the family’s 6R55 movement, 72-hour power reserve, 300m diver’s rating and case dimensions. Current price and availability are not established by the launch research, so check Seiko or a regional authorized retailer before purchasing.

SPB453: the black model

The SPB453 has a black dial and shares the standard range’s core specifications. The dossier does not establish a current price or stock status. Confirm the exact reference, regional availability and seller details before buying.

Casio MDV-106B Series | Duro Diver-Style Watch | 200M Water Resistant | Stainless Steel Case | Unidirectional Bezel | Screw-Lock Crown | Date Display
  • DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106B is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
  • STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106B features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
  • LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
  • 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
  • 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.

SPB455: the centenary special edition

The SPB455 is Seiko’s brand-centenary special edition in this range. It has a charcoal-grey dial with gold-coloured accents and includes an additional recycled-polyester strap made from recycled plastic bottles using Seichu braiding. Seiko reports a nearly fourfold tensile-strength comparison with its regular fabric straps based on its own research; this is a manufacturer claim, not independent testing.

The core platform remains the 6R55 movement, 72-hour reserve and 300m diver’s water resistance shared by the other models. The official source does not call the SPB455 limited, and the available research does not verify current regional availability.

Launch timing and regional prices

Seiko announced the watches on 7 March 2024 and said they would be available from June 2024 at Seiko Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide. Its announcement listed Australian recommended retail prices of AUD 1,995 for the SPB451 and SPB453, and AUD 2,350 for the SPB455. These are dated Australian launch prices, not current or universal prices; Seiko said prices and specifications may change.

The research does not establish current prices, live stock, or present-day retailer listings. Check the relevant regional Seiko site or an authorized retailer for current information, and verify the exact model reference before purchase.

Which model should you choose?

  1. Choose the SPB451 if you want blue. It is the blue standard model and shares the core specifications of the SPB453.
  2. Choose the SPB453 if you prefer black. Its dial distinguishes it from the blue SPB451; no performance advantage between the two is established by the research.
  3. Choose the SPB455 for the centenary styling and extra strap. Its charcoal-grey dial, gold-coloured accents and additional recycled-polyester strap are its distinguishing features.
  4. Check regional pricing and availability. The published Australian prices are launch prices from 2024 and do not establish current prices or stock elsewhere.
  5. Verify aftermarket strap fit. The available research does not confirm lug width or compatibility with third-party straps.
