Turning it changes the watch’s operating mode, giving the design a tactile alternative to the push-button controls common on digital watches. Seiko’s current models revisit a design first introduced in 1982; whether it is anyone’s “favourite” is a matter of personal taste, not a specification.
What is the Seiko Rotocall?
“Rotocall” refers to Seiko’s 1982 digital-watch design, now revived in a contemporary range. The defining feature is not a new timekeeping technology but the way the wearer selects functions: a rotary switch integrated into the octagonal bezel. Seiko describes the current range in its Japan announcement and US announcement.
That interface gives the watch a different character from a conventional digital model whose functions are accessed only with buttons. Seiko’s design feature discusses the redesign and identifies designer Shintaro Sukeda; it does not establish a hands-on verdict about comfort or usability.
How does the rotating bezel work?
The octagonal bezel incorporates a rotary switch. Turning it changes the watch’s operating mode, so the bezel is an active control rather than merely a frame around the display. Seiko describes this mechanism as the central feature of the revived design in its US announcement and Japan announcement.

What functions does the new Rotocall have?
For the SMGG21, Seiko lists the A824 quartz caliber and these functions and specifications. The figures below are manufacturer claims, not independent test results, and apply to the listed model.
- Timekeeping: stated accuracy of ±20 seconds per month and approximately three years of battery life.
- Chronograph: elapsed-time measurement up to 100 hours.
- Alarm and timer: a single-time alarm and a timer with a maximum setting of 100 minutes.
- Calendar and second time: a full auto calendar through December 31, 2074, plus dual time.
- Other features: battery-life warning and internal LED illumination.
Seiko’s US and UK descriptions disagree on the chronograph’s increment wording: the US announcement says 1/100-second increments, while the UK product page says 1/101-second increments. That detail is best left unresolved rather than treating either description as definitive.

How large is the Seiko SMGG21, and what is it made of?
Seiko gives the SMGG21 a 37.0 mm case diameter, 10.6 mm thickness, 43.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 107 g weight. Its listed materials are a stainless-steel case and Hardlex crystal; the lug width is 20 mm. Seiko rates the watch at 10 bar water resistance. These are published specifications, not independent measurements or a guarantee of suitability for a particular activity. See the Seiko US model listing and Seiko UK product page.
A 20 mm lug width does not by itself confirm that a generic strap will fit or that the supplied bracelet can be replaced without model-specific hardware. Check compatibility with Seiko or a retailer before buying a replacement.

Which Rotocall models are available?
The lineup depends on the market. Seiko USA’s current announcement lists three references: SMGG17, SMGG19 and SMGG21. Seiko Japan’s October 16, 2025 announcement describes three regular versions and two Space Brothers collaboration limited editions. Those market lineups should not be assumed to match one another; check the local Seiko listing for the reference sold in your country.
How much does the Seiko Rotocall cost?
Published prices and release dates are regional and date-specific, not a single worldwide price.

“Favourite” is personal, and published specifications cannot establish whether the Rotocall will be the best digital watch for a particular wearer. What Seiko’s information does establish is a specific design proposition: a compact, 37 mm case, familiar digital timing and calendar functions, and mode selection through a rotating bezel switch. The appeal depends on whether that physical control and retro-inspired form matter more to you than hands-on comfort, comparative performance or other features; those judgments require seeing or trying the watch yourself.
