The launch paired the watch with a limited run of 25 customized Wright Flyer bicycles. Both were historical releases: The Wright Brothers USA later reported that the watches sold out within months and the bicycles by spring 2014.
What Shinola launched in 2013
Shinola announced the Wright Brothers Limited Edition Watch & Bicycle at an event at Detroit’s Henry Ford Museum. The company described the Great Americans Series as limited-edition watches honoring American innovators and industrial pioneers. Shinola and the Wright family also donated a piece of original Wright Flyer I wing cloth to the museum.
The watch was the series’ first release. The bicycle was a companion item rather than another watch model: Shinola said it was building 25 customized bicycles based on its Runwell frame and fork.
Wright Brothers watch specifications
The Wright Brothers USA licensed-products page lists two stainless-steel cushion-case sizes and a black display. The watch uses Shinola’s Argonite 715 quartz movement, with Super-LumiNova on the hands and indices, and a premium Horween leather strap. The page says each watch was assembled by hand in Detroit from more than 50 Swiss-made components.

Presentation set and collectors-club membership
The original watch set was packaged as a collector’s presentation, not simply as a watch in a standard retail box. Shinola’s announcement listed a custom gift box, certificate of authenticity, leather card wallet, leather carrying case, hickory watch box, and a leather-bound coffee table book containing imagery from the Wright brothers’ collection. Purchase also included automatic membership in Shinola’s Foundry collectors club.
Those included items matter when assessing a second-hand example: a watch offered without its documented presentation materials is not a complete example of the original set. The source descriptions establish what was included at launch, but do not authenticate any individual resale listing.

The Wright Flyer bicycle
Shinola described the bicycle as a customized version of its Runwell, finished in jet black and fitted with bamboo fenders and a bright headlamp. The Wright Brothers USA page identifies the model as the Wright Flyer and specifies CroMo tubing in the frame and fork. The launch announcement and the Los Angeles Times both reported a run of 25 bicycles.
Original quantity, price and later sellout
The Los Angeles Times reported that Shinola made 1,000 watches in total, split evenly between the two case sizes, and set the original retail price at $1,000. It reported an original price of $2,950 for the 25 bicycles. These figures describe the 2013 launch, not current resale values.

What to check when considering a pre-owned example
For the watch
- Case size: Confirm whether the example is the 40 mm or 46 mm version.
- Documentation: Look for provenance and authenticity documentation, and ask the seller to support the claimed edition identity.
- Condition and completeness: Assess the watch’s condition and whether the original presentation items—especially the certificate, hickory watch box and book—are present.
- Price context: Treat the reported $1,000 figure as original 2013 retail pricing, not as evidence of a current fair price.
For the bicycle
- Fit: Check frame size and fit for the intended rider.
- Condition and components: Inspect the bicycle and establish which original components remain.
- Edition evidence: Ask for documentation supporting its identity as one of the limited Wright Flyer bicycles.
The available launch and licensing descriptions provide specifications and original-run details, but do not establish the condition, present availability or resale value of surviving watches or bicycles.

How the launch fits Shinola’s series
Shinola’s current About page dates its first Great Americans commemorative timepiece to 2013 and says the series continued to honor a selected Great American each year for the next decade. The same page currently describes a five-year limited warranty for defects in materials and workmanship on Shinola watches. That present general warranty statement should not be assumed to apply retroactively to this 2013 limited edition; check the terms relevant to the individual watch.
