A Speedmaster Moonwatch can be a rewarding first watch if you specifically want its chronograph design and history, like the idea of winding a watch by hand, and find the fit and price comfortable. It is not the automatic choice for every first-time buyer: its size, 5-bar water-resistance rating and daily routine deserve a closer look before you decide.
Why a first-watch buyer might regret passing on the Speedmaster
The appeal is unusually easy to understand: the Moonwatch pairs a distinctive chronograph layout with a history that OMEGA traces to NASA selecting the Speedmaster for its crewed space missions in 1965 and to the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969. Those are the manufacturer’s historical claims; the watch’s significance is part of its identity, not a reason by itself to buy one. OMEGA’s Moonwatch catalog
What can make the “I should have bought one” feeling linger is that the watch is a clear, specific choice: a steel chronograph with a familiar black dial, tactile controls and a manual-winding movement in the Hesalite version discussed here. If that combination is what you keep wanting, choosing a less expensive or more convenient watch simply because it seems like the safer first purchase may not settle the question.
But a first watch does not need to be a Moonwatch to be a good first watch. The useful question is whether you want this particular watch enough to accept its practical trade-offs.

What the current Moonwatch offers
The Hesalite-on-bracelet reference used as the main example is 310.30.42.50.01.001. OMEGA’s product sheet specifies a 42 mm steel case, 47.50 mm lug-to-lug length, 13.54 mm thickness, 20 mm lug width and a manual-winding calibre 3861 chronograph. Its stated power reserve is 50 hours. The sheet also identifies METAS Master Chronometer approval and resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. That set of specifications gives a more useful picture than the 42 mm diameter alone. The watch’s length across the lugs and thickness affect how it sits and feels, while its 20 mm lug width is relevant if you are considering other straps. Measurements cannot tell you whether its weight, profile or proportions will suit your wrist; try the exact reference on if possible.

Check the daily routine and water rating
Manual winding
The Hesalite reference has a manual-winding movement, so winding is part of wearing it rather than something a battery or automatic rotor takes care of. Its stated 50-hour power reserve indicates how long it can run when fully wound under the manufacturer’s stated specification; it does not mean the watch needs winding at a fixed time every day. Ask yourself whether winding feels like a satisfying ritual or an obligation you would rather avoid.
Water resistance
OMEGA specifies 5 bar, also expressed as 50 metres, for the Hesalite reference. Treat that as the manufacturer’s rating, not a promise that the watch is appropriate for every swim, dive or water activity. Match the watch to how you actually plan to use it, and consult OMEGA or an authorized retailer for guidance on the intended activity and care.

Choose the crystal and configuration, not just the name
Moonwatch Professional configurations differ. OMEGA’s collection page lists steel models with Hesalite on a fabric strap or steel bracelet, and sapphire on a leather strap or steel bracelet. Confirm the reference and the included strap or bracelet for the specific watch you are considering rather than assuming every Moonwatch comes with the same setup. | Configuration | Reference and stated dimensions | Movement and reserve |
|---|---|---|
| Hesalite crystal, steel bracelet | 310.30.42.50.01.001; 42 mm diameter, 47.50 mm lug-to-lug, 13.54 mm thick; 20 mm lug width | Manual-winding calibre 3861 chronograph; 50-hour power reserve |
| Sapphire crystal, steel bracelet | 310.30.42.50.01.002; 42 mm diameter, 47.50 mm lug-to-lug, 13.18 mm thick; lug width not stated in the cited product sheet | Calibre 3861; 50-hour power reserve; winding method not stated in the cited product sheet |
Dimensions and movement details above come from OMEGA’s respective product sheets: Hesalite reference 310.30.42.50.01.001 and sapphire reference 310.30.42.50.01.002. The sheets establish which crystal each reference uses, but do not provide a controlled comparison of scratch or impact performance; do not assume a durability ranking from the crystal names alone.

Account for the 2026 black-and-white models
On January 13, 2026, OMEGA announced black-and-white 42 mm Moonwatch models in steel and 18K Moonshine Gold, powered by calibre 3861. The announcement states a five-year warranty for those announced models. That statement is specific to the new models in the announcement; check warranty terms for the exact reference, seller and market you are buying in. OMEGA’s January 13, 2026 announcement
OMEGA describes the calibre in the announcement as “the most advanced evolution of the famous Calibre 321 that NASA astronauts trusted on the Moon.” That is the manufacturer’s wording, rather than an independent comparative assessment.

Make the first-watch decision without turning it into a test of taste
Before buying, use a short checklist that focuses on your actual use rather than the Moonwatch’s reputation:
- Try the exact reference. Check how the case length, thickness, weight and bracelet feel on your wrist.
- Choose a crystal and pairing. Decide whether you want Hesalite or sapphire and whether the delivered setup should be a bracelet, fabric strap or leather strap.
- Be honest about winding. Consider whether manually winding the Hesalite model would be enjoyable in ordinary use.
- Match the rating to your routine. If water exposure is central to how you wear a watch, get activity-specific guidance rather than treating 50 metres as a blanket guarantee.
- Set a comfortable budget first. Check the price in your country, including applicable taxes, and the seller’s warranty and return terms. Prices displayed on OMEGA’s Hong Kong collection page are regional, not a universal price.
If the watch still appeals after those checks and its cost fits your budget, it can be a compelling first purchase. If it does not fit comfortably, you dislike winding, or your intended use calls for a different water-resistance profile, passing on it is a sensible decision—not a failure to choose the “right” first watch.
