Relume vintage watch hands only when their condition or appearance warrants it and you value the improvement more than untouched originality. If the original lume is attractive and secure, leave it alone; if it is loose or flaking, ask a qualified watchmaker whether it can be stabilized before considering replacement. Document any work and disclose it if you sell the watch.
What are your options?
Leave the original lume in place
Original lume preserves the hands’ history and aged appearance, which can matter to collectors. Patina is not automatically a defect: a small chip or color change may be acceptable if the material is secure and you like how it looks. Vintage lume can also become fragile, however, so appearance alone does not tell you whether it is stable.
Stabilize the existing lume
Ask whether the original material can be secured without removing it. Lewis Watch Co. describes sealing original lume as a service option, but ask the watchmaker exactly what treatment involves and whether the material will remain in place. It may be a useful middle ground when preservation matters but the lume is vulnerable.
Relume the hands
Reluming replaces missing, damaged, or unwanted luminous material. A specialist may match the new application to lume remaining on the hands, but matching and finish depend on the restorer’s skill. Replacement material is not original lume, even when its color is chosen to blend with aged material. A collector interviewed by Fratello Watches described both a successful match and dissatisfaction with a previous relume, underscoring how much the result can depend on execution.

How should you weigh the decision?
- Condition: Is the lume merely aged, or is it missing, actively flaking, or loose? Loose material may enter the movement, so have a watchmaker assess it rather than judging only by the dial-side appearance.
- Originality and collectability: Original aging can be part of a vintage watch’s appeal. The more you prioritize originality or collectability, the stronger the case for preserving existing material when practical.
- Appearance and legibility: If missing lume bothers you or the hands no longer look coherent to you, replacement may make sense—provided you accept that it changes the watch’s originality.
- Reversibility and preservation: Before authorizing removal, ask whether stabilization is possible and what each proposed treatment would change.
- Quality of the work: Ask to see examples of comparable work and discuss the intended color and finish. A poor match can look more distracting than missing or aged lume.
Vintage-watch dealer Eric Wind summarized the tension in a Fratello Watches interview: “My first instinct is to keep watches as original as possible. In general, though, I am not a huge fan of hands missing lume.” That is a preference, not a universal rule: the right choice depends on the watch and on what matters to you.
Can you identify or remove old lume yourself?
Historical watches may use materials such as radium or tritium; modern luminous compounds include LumiNova, Super-LumiNova, and Lumibrite. Those broad categories do not identify the material on a particular watch. The available evidence does not establish a reliable owner-safe identification method or universal handling and disposal rules. Do not scrape, dissolve, or otherwise remove old lume yourself. Have a qualified watchmaker assess the hands and advise on safe, appropriate handling.

What to ask the watchmaker—and what to record
- Ask whether the lume is secure, loose, or missing, and whether any loose material could affect the movement.
- Ask whether the existing lume can be stabilized, and what that treatment entails.
- If reluming is proposed, agree on the intended color and finish and ask how the replacement will relate visually to the remaining lume.
- Before work begins, take photographs and request a written record of what was retained, stabilized, removed, or replaced.
- Keep the service record with the watch and disclose the work if you sell it; restoration history is relevant to a buyer’s assessment of originality.
For service context, Lewis Watch Co. describes hand reluming, repainting, and sealing original lume; the company also states it is no longer affiliated with Swatch Group or an authorized Omega workshop. HOROLUMA describes its own work as using period-correct materials, including original old-stock tritium pigment.
