Why the Carré des Horlogers mattered in 2016
The 26th SIHH, held in Geneva in January 2016, introduced the Carré des Horlogers as a dedicated area for independent watchmakers. The SIHH retrospective described the initiative as a way to present a broader view of fine watchmaking. Of 24 exhibitors overall, nine occupied this new independent-focused space. Standout watches and objects
HYT H1 Iceberg2 and Skull Maori: time with a visual signature
Time+Tide singled out the H1 Iceberg2 and Skull Maori among HYT’s fair highlights. The Iceberg2’s arctic color scheme gave the model a cool, glacial look; the Skull Maori made its engraved skull motif the focal point. Kari Voutilainen Vingt-8: traditional watchmaking, varied dials
The Vingt-8 offered a contrasting kind of impact: traditional high-end watchmaking paired with striking dial variations. Contemporary fair coverage also noted new finishes for Vingt-8 chronometers. Rather than relying on an unconventional case or time display, its appeal in these reports lay in the dial work and classical watchmaking character. Laurent Ferrier Galet: a sportier turn
Time+Tide described a new Galet with a larger 41 mm case, luminous dial details, and a sportier strap treatment. Those reported details suggest a more casual visual direction for the Galet; they are not evidence of a hands-on assessment of comfort or performance. Time+Tide’s SIHH 2016 highlights

MB&F HM6 SV: sapphire as spectacle
The sapphire-cased HM6 SV stood out for its unconventional, sculptural appearance. Its transparent case shifted attention from a conventional dial-and-case presentation to the watch’s form and visible construction. Urwerk UR-105 T-Rex: texture takes the lead
The UR-105 T-Rex paired Urwerk’s unconventional satellite-style indication with a bronze case whose raised, reptile-like texture gave the exterior its own strong identity. De Bethune DB25 World Traveller: a city-by-city complication
De Bethune’s DB25 World Traveller brought a travel-time function into the selection. Wallpaper* described a display covering 24 time zones, with city names and a day/night indicator. MB&F Sherman: a clock, not a wristwatch
Sherman, made with L’Epée 1839, was a small robot-shaped table clock rather than a watch to wear. Its playful form expanded the fair’s horological range beyond wristwatches. SJX reported its original price as CHF 13,800 in 2016, while Time+Tide described it as relatively accessible compared with other pieces at the fair. One further example blurred the line between unconventional display and classical decoration: a contemporaneous WatchPro preview described HYT’s H2 Tradition as combining the brand’s fluid time display with classical decorative techniques and a regulator-style dial layout. The preview reported planned production of 50 pieces and quoted HYT CEO Vincent Perriard: “We have always said that we would never create a classic piece. A compact snapshot of independent watchmaking
The Carré des Horlogers’ first edition brought together markedly different ideas of what a fine watch or clock could be. Voutilainen’s dial work represented a craft-centered tradition; HYT made the indication itself unusual; Urwerk and MB&F treated the case and construction as part of the spectacle; and Sherman shifted the focus from wristwatch to table clock. The fair’s reported attendance establishes the scale of the event, but it does not measure sales, market share, or the commercial performance of the nine exhibitors.
