The original Sinn EZM 1, reference 503.010, keeps its chronograph visually quiet by letting the stopwatch hands rest at 12 when they are not in use. That leaves the hour and minute hands and the minute track in the foreground—a practical choice for a watch designed for Germany’s Central Customs Support Group ZUZ, not simply a minimalist styling exercise.
Why the EZM 1 dial looks so clean
In Fratello’s 52Mondayz week #10 feature, Gerard Nijenbrinks calls the EZM 1 “uncluttered.” His explanation is rooted in how the watch reads at rest: the chronograph hands sit at 12, there is no continuously running small-seconds hand, and the ordinary time display remains prominent. Start the chronograph and the watch’s timing function comes into view; leave it stopped and the dial stays focused on telling the time. Fratello’s feature presents this as the main reason Nijenbrinks loved the watch.
Sinn’s 2025–2026 catalogue describes the display as reduced “to an absolute minimum for optimum readability and perfect time measurement.” It also specifies a central 60-minute stopwatch hand. The pared-back appearance therefore serves the EZM 1’s mission: keep the time display legible while making elapsed minutes directly readable on the central hand, rather than scattering the information across several subdials. Sinn’s 2025–2026 catalogue
A mission timer, not just a minimalist chronograph
Sinn dates the original EZM 1’s production to 1997–2005 and says it was designed for the Central Customs Support Group ZUZ. Its reduced display and central 60-minute timing hand make sense in that operational context: the watch prioritizes a quick reading of time and elapsed minutes. Sinn’s 2025–2026 catalogue

The controls reflect the same thinking in Sinn’s account of the later EZM 1.1: its crown and push-pieces are on the left side to reduce pressure on the back of the hand and help prevent snagging during time-critical work. That explanation belongs to the EZM 1.1 brochure’s description of the design rationale; it should not be confused with a claim that every owner will experience the same practical benefit. The original EZM 1 and the later EZM 1.1 are different watches
The movement is the central distinction. Fratello identifies the original EZM 1 as using the Lemania 5100. Sinn says the later EZM 1.1’s SZ01 was modeled on that calibre after the Lemania movement was no longer available; the SZ01 is based on the Valjoux 7750 and has a central, jumping 60-minute stopwatch hand. The SZ01 is not the original EZM 1’s movement. Fratello’s feature · Sinn’s EZM 1.1 brochure

Dial markings and the pictured watch
Sinn’s brochure distinguishes two dial-marked examples: it describes the EZM 1 with “ZUZ” on the dial as the official timepiece used by the unit, and the “3H”-marked version as a civilian model. Those markings provide variant context; they are not a universal specification for every EZM 1. Sinn’s EZM 1.1 brochure

Nijenbrinks describes the watch pictured in his feature as having a bead-blasted titanium case and a matte black, bidirectional rotating pilot’s bezel. He says he owned the titanium bracelet but usually wore the watch on leather. That is his account of his own watch, not proof that every example came with the same configuration or that a particular replacement strap will fit. Fratello’s feature

Nijenbrinks reports that Lemania stopped producing the 5100 at the end of 2004 and that Sinn later made a 250-piece limited series in 2008. The 250-piece figure is his account in the 2017 feature; the cited material does not independently confirm that number. Fratello’s feature
