Omega Railmaster vs. Rolex Milgauss: History, Magnetic Resistance and 2025 Models

Both watches began as answers to magnetic fields. Omega’s 2025 Railmaster models claim up to 15,000 gauss; Rolex describes the Milgauss as designed for up to 1,000 gauss, with no shared independent test established here.

The Omega Railmaster and Rolex Milgauss were both created for people working around magnetic fields, but their current contexts differ. Omega announced new 38 mm Railmaster models in 2025, rated by the brand to resist up to 15,000 gauss and certified by METAS. Rolex’s official Milgauss material describes a design intended to resist up to 1,000 gauss, but the sources available here do not establish current new-retail availability. Those figures are manufacturer claims for different model contexts—not the result of a shared independent test.

Why Omega and Rolex made these watches

Omega Railmaster: built for railway and industrial work

Omega dates the Railmaster’s launch to 1957 and places it among three watches in its Professional Line, alongside the first Speedmaster and the Seamaster 300. The brand says the Railmaster was intended for railway staff and others working near magnetic fields, including engineers, industrial workers and scientists. Omega’s account says the original watch used an inner protective case to resist up to 1,000 gauss; it also says most anti-magnetic watches of the period offered around 60 gauss. Those are Omega’s historical figures, not independently verified market-wide measurements. Omega’s 15 May 2025 announcement recounts the history.

Rolex Milgauss: designed for engineers and technicians

Rolex dates the Milgauss to 1956 and describes it as a watch for engineers and technicians exposed to magnetic fields capable of disrupting mechanical watches. Its explanation describes an internal shield protecting the movement, with resistance designed up to 1,000 gauss. Rolex’s history also records an early 1956 example and a 2014 Milgauss reference, and says researchers at CERN tested the watch. Rolex’s Oyster history and its Milgauss user guide provide the brand’s account.

Magnetic resistance: what the numbers do—and do not—show

The headline figures differ by generation: Omega says its 2025 Railmaster models resist up to 15,000 gauss, while Rolex describes the Milgauss as designed to resist up to 1,000 gauss. Omega’s historical account gives the original Railmaster a 1,000-gauss figure as well. These are attributed manufacturer specifications; the cited material does not establish a common independent test protocol that would make a direct performance ranking conclusive.

Watch and model context Published magnetic-resistance figure What the source establishes
Omega Railmaster, original design Up to 1,000 gauss Omega’s 2025 historical account says the original used an inner protective case.
Omega Railmaster, models announced in 2025 Up to 15,000 gauss Omega’s announcement describes the Master Chronometer models and METAS certification.
Rolex Milgauss Designed to resist up to 1,000 gauss Rolex’s user guide states the design claim; it is not a shared independent comparison.

Rolex’s Milgauss brochure says ordinary mechanical-watch performance can be affected by fields of 50 to 100 gauss and gives the Milgauss’s resistance as up to 1,000 gauss. Those figures are Rolex’s statements in the brochure’s Milgauss context, not independent contemporary measurements. Rolex’s Milgauss brochure provides that framing.

What changed with the 2025 Railmaster

Omega’s 15 May 2025 release announces two 38 mm stainless-steel configurations. Both are described as resisting magnetism up to 15,000 gauss and as METAS-certified Master Chronometers. The release assigns calibre 8806 to the central-seconds version and calibre 8804 to the small-seconds version.

Configuration Dial and seconds Strap or bracelet choices listed by Omega Movement
Grey dial Black gradient; central seconds Black leather or steel bracelet Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 8806
Beige dial Black gradient; small seconds Golden-brown Novonappa leather or steel bracelet Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 8804

The details and specifications above are from Omega’s 2025 announcement. Omega’s Japan-localized product page also lists a 38 mm stainless-steel Railmaster and the modern calibre family’s 15,000-gauss figure; its local pricing or availability should not be generalized to other markets.

Which one makes more sense to buy?

For someone choosing a currently documented configuration, the 2025 Railmaster has a clear specification and configuration trail from Omega. The official Rolex material cited here documents Milgauss history and archived product information, but does not confirm whether a new Milgauss is currently available at retail or establish contemporary prices. Check the catalog and authorized retailers for your country before treating either availability or price as current.

Be careful to distinguish a modern Railmaster from a historical re-edition when comparing listings. One specialist comparison covers the Railmaster 1957 Trilogy reference 220.10.38.20.01.002 and Milgauss 116400GV; those are specific references, not substitutes for the 2025 Railmaster specifications. The 1916 Company comparison identifies the references it discusses.

How to choose between them

  • Choose by the model in front of you. A 2025 Railmaster, an original-era watch, and a Trilogy re-edition are different contexts; likewise, Milgauss references should not be treated as interchangeable.
  • Read magnetic-resistance figures as attributed specifications. The 15,000- and 1,000-gauss claims do not by themselves prove a like-for-like test result or a universal advantage across all generations.
  • Compare the actual configuration. The 2025 Railmaster release specifies dial, seconds layout and strap or bracelet options; confirm that a particular listing matches the version you want.
  • Verify availability and price locally. The cited Rolex sources do not settle present-day new-retail status or current prices, and the Omega Japan page is market-specific.
