The Jan. 10, 2025 email titled “Smart Watch Class Action Settlement” appears to concern Smith et al. v. Apple Inc., a settlement over allegations involving battery swelling in certain early Apple Watch models. The match is strong: a contemporaneous forum post quoted a payment-details request that aligns with the official settlement FAQ. But matching language does not authenticate any particular email, sender, link, or QR code. The payment-selection deadline was April 10, 2025, and the court granted final approval on May 1, 2025; those deadlines have passed.
What settlement was the email about?
The email appears to relate to Smith et al. v. Apple Inc., No. 4:21-cv-09527, a class action in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The settlement concerned allegations that battery swelling in certain Apple Watches could cause the screen to detach, crack, or shatter. The case concluded in a settlement; the allegations should not be read as a finding that Apple was liable or that the alleged defect was proven.
A contemporaneous MacRumors forum post dated Jan. 10, 2025 reproduced an email asking recipients to confirm or update payment details. The official settlement FAQ independently describes that payment-election process and says a claim form was not required. This supports identifying the email with the settlement, but it cannot verify an individual message.
Who was included in the settlement?
The official class definition covers natural persons who resided in the United States and owned or previously owned a First Generation, Series 1, Series 2, or Series 3 Apple Watch for personal or household use. It also requires Apple’s records to reflect that the person reported a potentially battery-swell-related issue in the United States during the class period, April 24, 2015, through February 6, 2024.

Owning one of those watch generations, or receiving an email about the settlement, does not by itself establish eligibility. The published definition includes the U.S.-residence and Apple-recorded report requirements.
Was a claim form required, and what did the email ask recipients to do?
No claim form was required under the official FAQ. The FAQ said eligible class members could confirm or update payment information and choose a payment method by April 10, 2025. The forum poster reported that the email asked recipients to do this unless the payment information shown was already correct and reflected their preferred method. That is the poster’s account of the email, not independent authentication of a specific message.

The FAQ listed payment by physical check, electronic check, ACH transfer, or virtual prepaid Visa or MasterCard. It said that if a person did not select or confirm details, the administrator could use valid contact information already available to send an electronic payment or physical check; it also warned that payment might not be received if current, valid information could not be confirmed.
Can you still update payment details or take another deadline-based action?
No. The official documents page lists April 10, 2025, as the payment-selection deadline. It lists February 24, 2025, as the deadline to request exclusion or object. The court granted final approval on May 1, 2025, so all of those dates have passed.

Apple agreed to fund a $20 million settlement, according to the official FAQ. After administration costs, any court-awarded attorneys’ fees and litigation expenses, and service awards, the remaining fund was to be allocated among eligible class members. The FAQ estimated approximately $20 per covered watch and set a maximum of $50 per covered watch.

The court’s May 1, 2025 final approval order later described an estimate of approximately $25 per covered device. These are estimates reported at different stages, not guaranteed amounts for an individual recipient. The FAQ also described a maximum attorneys’ fee request of 25% of the settlement fund; that was a requested cap, not evidence that the full amount was awarded.
How can you check whether an email or link is genuine?
Use the settlement’s official site and public court documents to check the case number, class definition, deadlines, and stated payment process. For a message you received, navigate independently to watchsettlement.com or use contact information published on the official site rather than following an email link or scanning its QR code. This is a cautious way to verify information; it does not mean the Jan. 10 email was fraudulent.
