The Speedy Tuesday feature titled “Speedmaster Day-Date Caliber 1045” is about the vintage Omega Speedmaster Day-Date reference 176.0016—not a watch officially named “Speedy Tuesday.” Fratello’s May 29, 2012 article sometimes calls the 176.0016 the Mark 4.5. It belongs to Omega’s automatic Caliber 1045 family, whose distinctive chronograph layout puts the minute and seconds hands at the center of the dial.

What is the Omega Speedmaster Mark 4.5?

Robert-Jan Broer’s May 29, 2012 Fratello feature introduces the Speedmaster Day-Date ref. 176.0016 as its first reader-focused Speedy Tuesday watch story. The article says this reference is sometimes known as the Mark 4.5. “Speedy Tuesday” is the feature’s name, not the model name: the watch to identify is the Speedmaster Day-Date ref. 176.0016.

Fratello places the reference in the Speedmaster family powered by Omega Caliber 1045, which it describes as based on the Lemania 5100. Omega used different cases and reference numbers for watches in this automatic Day-Date family, so the movement name alone does not identify a particular model.

What does Omega Caliber 1045 do?

Caliber 1045 combines an automatic chronograph with a calendar and a 24-hour indicator. Fratello highlights the central chronograph minute hand alongside the central chronograph seconds hand—a layout that differs from a chronograph that records elapsed minutes on a small subdial. The reproduced Omega technical manual documents the following displays and specifications:

  • Central 60-minute chronograph recorder and a 12-hour recorder.
  • Small seconds and a 24-hour indicator.
  • Day and date indicators, with rapid correctors.
  • 31.00 mm diameter and 8.20 mm height.
  • 17 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 A/h.
  • 45-hour power reserve.

The 45-hour reserve and the other technical figures are listed in the reproduced Caliber 1045 manual, whose edition or publication year is not established there. Omega’s historical page for the separate ref. ST 376.0822 also gives 28,800 vibrations per hour for Caliber 1045 and says it succeeded Caliber 1040, adding a day/date calendar. That page describes the 24-hour indicator as providing a day/night reading.

Day and date correction

The manual documents date correction by turning the crown clockwise in its middle position and day correction by turning it counter-clockwise. This is movement documentation, not a universal adjustment instruction for every surviving watch: an unknown vintage example may have different operating guidance or condition concerns. Consult the instructions for the specific watch or a qualified watchmaker before using its correctors.

Does the Speedmaster 176.0016 take a strap?

Fratello describes the 176.0016 as a tonneau-shaped watch that originally came on a stainless-steel bracelet and reports examples wearable on a strap as well. The article also observes two apparent forms of the reference: one that accepts a strap and another usable only with its integrated steel bracelet. It points readers to an earlier reference-specific account for further detail, so this observation should not be treated as a complete parts-compatibility guide. Check the exact watch, case and bracelet configuration before assuming a strap will fit.

Is the 176.0016 the Speedmaster “Holy Grail”?

No. Fratello’s “Holy Grail” nickname refers to the distinct Speedmaster Automatic ref. 376.0822, not the Day-Date ref. 176.0016. Fratello’s 2017 buyer’s guide reports 2,000 examples made in 1987 for ref. 376.0822; that count is not a production figure for the 176.0016.

Is it the later Speedy Tuesday Anniversary watch?

No. Omega’s Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Anniversary ref. 311.32.42.30.01.001 is a separate, later watch. Omega describes it as commemorating the community’s fifth anniversary and paying tribute to the 1978 Alaska Project III. Its “Speedy Tuesday” name does not make it the Caliber 1045 Day-Date ref. 176.0016.

What is established about the 176.0016?

The cited articles identify the reference, its Caliber 1045 family, its tonneau-shaped case and Fratello’s observation about bracelet and strap-wearable forms.
