The discontinued watch is the original 2012 Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space, reference 311.32.40.30.01.001. Its discontinuation does not mean Omega stopped selling every FOiS: newer watches use different references and remain listed in Omega Japan’s catalog. If you are looking for the original, check the reference number rather than relying on the FOiS name alone.
Which Speedmaster FOiS was discontinued?
Fratello reported on December 29, 2020, that Omega had confirmed the discontinuation of reference 311.32.40.30.01.001, the original First Omega in Space introduced in 2012. The report describes a specific reference, not the end of the broader FOiS collection. Fratello’s 2020 report is the source for the discontinuation news.

Omega Japan’s current FOiS product and catalog pages list later watches under other references, including 310.30.40.50.06.001 on a steel bracelet and 310.32.40.50.01.001 and 310.32.40.50.01.002 on leather straps. Those listings establish that newer FOiS models exist; they do not establish stock in every market. Omega Japan’s product page and Omega Japan’s FOiS catalog are Japan-specific, so any prices shown there should be treated as regional and subject to change.
Why is the original FOiS connected to spaceflight?
The name refers to astronaut Walter Schirra wearing a Speedmaster during the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission on October 3, 1962. The 2012 FOiS drew inspiration from the CK2998 associated with that flight. It is a modern tribute, however, not an exact reproduction of the historic watch, as Fratello emphasizes in its account.

- Model 304.30.44.52.01.001
Omega introduced the FOiS at Baselworld in 2012. Its 39.7 mm steel case and vintage-inspired design made it a distinct take on the Speedmaster rather than a specification-for-specification recreation of the CK2998.

How many were made, and what did it cost?
Fratello estimated production at approximately 15,000 pieces, based on the highest serial numbers its authors had seen. That is the publication’s estimate, not an official Omega production total. Fratello also listed a retail price of €4,700 in 2020; it is historical context, not a current retail or resale valuation.
In December 2020, Fratello said some national markets had sold out and were not being restocked, while boutiques or authorized dealers in some places might still have examples. That dated report does not establish present availability. Check with sellers in your region for current stock and pricing.

How to identify the original when shopping
- Start with the reference: look for 311.32.40.30.01.001 on the watch documentation or seller listing. “First Omega in Space” alone can refer to later models.
- Check the configuration: the original reference was reported with a brown leather strap and signed pin buckle, alongside a 39.7 mm steel case and hand-wound caliber 1861.
- Separate later references: the newer Japan-listed models use 310-series references. Do not assume their movement, crystal, caseback, or other specifications are the same as the 2012 watch.
- Confirm condition and provenance: the supplied sources do not establish current stock, resale prices, or the authenticity of any individual listing; ask for clear reference documentation and have an uncertain watch assessed by a qualified professional.
