The Zenith El Primero Retrotimer replaces the usual start-stop-reset routine with a continuously running central seconds hand and a single pusher: press it to reset the hand and begin timing, then read elapsed minutes on a 30-minute register. Zenith historian Romain Marietta told Fratello that the watch was offered for one year and produced in fewer than 500 units for each of its two references—an attributed figure, not a published production ledger.
How the Retrotimer chronograph works
Most conventional chronographs use separate controls to start, stop and reset the timing hand. The Retrotimer takes a different approach. Its thin blue central seconds hand runs continuously and also serves as the chronograph seconds hand. Pressing the single pusher at 4 o’clock resets that hand to start a timed interval; elapsed minutes are read on the watch’s only register, which runs to 30 minutes.
Marietta described the idea to Fratello as “a fun product that works differently from a common chronograph with a start/stop/reset [system].” He continued: “Why not take off a pusher to have a half-chronograph or a half-flyback function? This is how we got the idea of the Retrotimer, a watch with a permanent central seconds hand turning that you can reset to measure an action for 30 minutes (we only kept the 30-minute counter).” The source characterizes the result as a simplified, single-register flyback concept; it is not the conventional three-step chronograph operation.
What makes it distinctive on the wrist
In Fratello’s hands-on account, the reviewed example has a 42 mm case, a silver dial, a particularly thin blue central chronograph hand, one 30-minute register and a clear caseback. The running hand gives the dial a constant point of motion, while the reduced register layout sets it apart from chronographs with multiple elapsed-time counters. Those dimensions and dial details describe the reviewed watch, not necessarily every configuration across the two references.

A red mark at eight minutes on the register comes with a story that Jean-Frédéric Dufour liked pasta cooked for eight minutes. Fratello presents this as a myth, not confirmed design history, so it is best treated as an anecdote rather than an explanation of the dial’s design.
Why production was limited—and what the number means
Fratello’s December 25, 2022 article quotes Zenith historian Romain Marietta on the watch’s launch and production. He said: “Yes, we launched the Retrotimer in 2010 as part of the first collection with Jean-Frédéric. It was part of the relaunch of the Chronomaster collection in 42mm.” This is Marietta’s account of the launch context, as reported by Fratello.
Rank #2
- Automatic movement
- Silver chronograph dial
- Black leather strap
- Grey black and blue subdials
- Water resistant to 330 feet (100 M): suitable for snorkeling, as well as swimming, but not diving
On rarity, Marietta said: “It was indeed very limited and in the collection only for one year. We did less than 500 units each (two references).” The qualification matters: the reported figure is fewer than 500 units for each of two references, not fewer than 500 watches in total. Fratello’s account supports describing the Retrotimer as uncommon, but does not establish an independently audited total production count.

Fratello reported seeing pre-owned examples listed for €4,000–€7,000 in its December 25, 2022 article. That is a dated observation of asking prices, not a present-day valuation or evidence of completed sale prices. It does not establish current availability, the condition or authenticity of a particular watch, or its service history.
For a purchase today, assess the individual watch rather than relying on that historic range. Confirm its exact reference and configuration, inspect condition and provenance, and ask for service documentation. The source reports two references but does not provide their reference numbers; it also does not verify current stock or pricing.
