Speedy Tuesday: The Rise of the Omega Speedmaster Reduced

Introduced in 1988, the Speedmaster Reduced paired a 39 mm case and automatic winding with Speedmaster chronograph styling. Here’s how the 3510.50.00 differs from the Moonwatch and what to check on a pre-owned example.

The Omega Speedmaster Reduced brought the Speedmaster look to a smaller, self-winding chronograph. Introduced in 1988, it is best known in black-dial form as reference 3510.50.00: a 39 mm watch with an automatic movement and a chronograph module built on top of its base movement. It is a distinct Speedmaster, not simply a smaller Moonwatch, and the discontinued 3510.50.00 is now chiefly a pre-owned purchase.

What is the Speedmaster Reduced?

The Speedmaster Reduced is an automatic chronograph in the Speedmaster family. Omega lists the 3510.50.00 as a 39 mm stainless-steel watch with a black dial, reinforced plastic crystal, 3 bar (30 m / 100 ft) water resistance, automatic calibre 3220 and a 40-hour power reserve. Omega marks the reference discontinued. Those specifications apply to 3510.50.00, not every related automatic Speedmaster variant. Omega’s reference page

The model arrived in 1988, according to Phillips and Fratello. It offered a smaller, automatic alternative to the larger, hand-wound Speedmaster Professional. Fratello’s retrospective describes smaller size, automatic winding and a lower historical retail price as attractions for some buyers; these are contextual explanations, not universal motives. Why the movement makes it different

The Reduced is automatic, but it is not merely a Moonwatch with a different case size. Its chronograph uses a modular construction: an automatic base movement and an add-on chronograph module are stacked together. That differs from the movement architecture of the classic hand-wound Moonwatch. The layout is a meaningful design distinction and a reason to take service documentation seriously on an older example; it is not, by itself, proof that a particular watch is unreliable.

The sources reviewed do not agree on the precise ETA base calibre used in the 3510.50: Phillips identifies an ETA 2892-A2 base, while Fratello names an ETA 2890-A2. Omega specifies calibre 3220 for the reference but does not settle that disagreement on its product page. The careful description is an ETA-based automatic movement with an add-on chronograph module. How it compares with the Moonwatch

Point of comparison Speedmaster Reduced 3510.50.00 Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch
Case size 39 mm, per Omega 42 mm for the Professional of the period cited by Phillips
Winding Automatic Hand-wound
Chronograph construction Modular: add-on chronograph module atop the base movement Different movement architecture; the cited sources do not specify it here
Identity A Speedmaster with its own reference and movement configuration The Professional Moonwatch; not interchangeable with the Reduced

The size difference is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of fit: try both watches on wrist if possible. Fratello cautions that sellers sometimes use “Moonwatch” loosely for a Reduced. Check the reference rather than relying on a listing’s headline. Fratello’s history of the Reduced family

The Reduced family includes more than one configuration

Reference 3510.50.00 is the familiar black-dial Reduced, but similar-looking automatic Speedmasters are not all the same reference. Fratello identifies the leather-strap reference 3810.50 and dates the first date versions to 1991; calendar and day-date variants followed later in the 1990s. Confirm the reference of the particular watch before applying specifications or describing its functions.

What “rise” means in its historical context

The Reduced’s appeal was not that it replaced the Moonwatch. It offered a different combination: a 39 mm case, automatic winding and recognizable Speedmaster styling. Fratello reports historical retail prices in 2000 of €1,220 for a Speedmaster Reduced 3510.50 and €2,180 for a Hesalite Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. Those are historical figures reported in Fratello’s 2026 retrospective, not current prices or an independently audited price series. Fratello’s retrospective

What to check when buying a pre-owned Reduced

Because Omega lists 3510.50.00 as discontinued, buyers are generally comparing pre-owned examples. Asking prices and marketplace estimates change, so no single listing establishes the model’s value. WatchCharts’ reference page is a changing marketplace snapshot, not a fixed valuation. WatchCharts marketplace overview

  • Verify the reference. Match the watch and its functions to the stated reference; do not treat “Moonwatch” in a listing as proof it is a Professional.
  • Assess condition. Examine the case, dial, hands, crystal, bracelet or strap, and chronograph operation. Ask for clear photographs and an opportunity for inspection.
  • Ask about service. Request records and dates. With a modular chronograph and an unclear history, consider an inspection by a qualified watchmaker familiar with this type of movement. The sources reviewed establish no universal service interval, service cost or failure rate.
  • Compare the full transaction. Check what is included, seller return terms, location and any applicable import costs alongside the asking price.

Fratello notes that the reference 1469 bracelet tapers from 18 mm to 16 mm. That detail does not establish compatibility for every Reduced variant or replacement part, so verify the exact watch, end links and fit before ordering a strap or bracelet.
