Squale’s “since 1959” date marks the registration of its trademark, not the start of its watchmaking roots: the company says the Von Büren factory was established in 1950, and its first watches under the Squale name arrived in 1962. Squale says it has made only diving watches since 1959. That history helps explain the brand’s focus, but model specifications and suitability still depend on the exact reference.
What does “since 1959” mean?
Squale’s official history distinguishes three milestones: Charles and Helene Von Büren established Von Büren SA in Neuchâtel in 1950; Charles Von Büren registered the Squale trademark on 10 July 1959; and the first models launched exclusively under the Squale name in 1962. The dates refer to different events, not competing start dates. Squale’s history is the source for this chronology.

The brand’s philosophy page says, “Since 1959 Squale has been producing solely diving watches.” That is Squale’s own description of its focus, rather than an independently audited account of every product it has made. Squale’s philosophy also recounts its history of making cases for other brands.

Squale traces the first 1521 to the mid-1970s. In the company’s account, it was a thinner redesign based on the Master, intended to preserve high performance in a smaller case. The historical model is described as approximately 12 mm thick, pressure-resistant to as much as 50 atmospheres, and fitted with flat mineral glass and a unidirectional bezel with 60 clicks. Those are historical details; they should not be assumed to describe every current 1521 reference.

Squale also explains that its characteristic case-back design and 4 o’clock crown were intended to support reliability and reduce accidental knocks during a dive. What do the current collections offer?
Squale’s professional-collections page lists the 1521, Master, Matic, 2002, 1545, and Periscope. Catalogs can change, so treat this as a snapshot of the collections listed by the brand, not a guarantee that every line or reference is currently available.

Master and Super Squale
Squale presents the Master as a technically ambitious line for greater depths and the Super Squale as a simpler dive-watch line. Its current Super Squale page states a 38 mm case diameter and 200-meter water resistance. Those figures apply to the page’s described model, not automatically to other Squale watches. Check the exact reference before comparing dimensions, water-resistance ratings, or intended use.

A question such as “Squale 1521 Azzurro vs. Squale 1545” cannot be settled by collection names alone. Compare the references you are considering on the details that affect fit and use:

- Stated water resistance and whether it suits your intended activities.
- Bezel operation and dial legibility in the conditions where you will use it.
- Movement type, service requirements, and available documentation.
- Strap or bracelet fit, plus the cost and availability of replacements.
- Price and availability in your market at the time you buy.
The brand’s collection pages do not provide a complete, independently verified side-by-side comparison of all current models. Use the exact reference pages and confirm any details that matter to your decision with the seller.

Squale says its watches are assembled by hand in its Ticino laboratories and that each assembled watch undergoes a water-resistance test. This describes the manufacturer’s process; it is not independent certification of a particular watch and does not change that watch’s stated operating limits. Check the rating for the exact reference and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and care. The company’s professional collections page describes its collections and manufacturing approach.

What should you check before buying?
- Identify the exact reference. Use the model or reference number to find its own current specifications. Do not infer a current watch’s dimensions or construction from a historical description of the 1521 or from a different model in the same collection.
- Confirm the seller and paperwork. Squale provides watch-finding and authorized-dealer routes on its official site. Check the seller’s current status and make sure your purchase documentation records the date and includes the reseller’s stamp or signature, which Squale says its warranty documentation requires.
- Check the warranty activation requirement. Squale states that its international warranty lasts two years from the purchase date. For watches produced from 2021 onward, the company says online activation with the serial number and purchase date is required. Pre-2021 models without a serial number on the case back do not require online activation, according to the brand. Keep the purchase record and check the terms for the individual watch on Squale’s warranty page.
- Verify current price and availability. These vary by reference, seller, and market; confirm them directly rather than relying on a collection overview or historical information.
