In 2019, ten steel sports watches were being recommended as buyable without a waitlist, according to Time+Tide’s June 20, 2019 guide. The list spans luxury brands and very different designs, and it reflects one editorial moment rather than a stock check. The aBlogtoWatch article that carries this title could not be checked against its own text, so none of the picks below should be credited to aBlogtoWatch. Treat them as the Time+Tide selections.
What “without a waitlist” meant in 2019
The phrase describes availability at the time of publication. In 2019, demand for several steel sports watches outran supply, and buyers who missed out on a popular model had to decide whether to wait or switch brands. The phrase does not describe current dealer stock, and it does not mean a watch is easy to buy today. Prices, inventory and allocation practices change, so the 2019 claim needs to be read as a snapshot.
The scarcity was real enough that Gear Patrol, writing about Chopard’s Alpine Eagle in October 2019, questioned whether buyers who could not get a Royal Oak or a Nautilus would move to another brand. That question frames the whole category: a steel sports watch that was easy to buy was valuable to anyone whose first choice was sold out.
The 2019 list at a glance
Time+Tide’s article, titled “Skip the waitlist – 10 of the best steel sports watches you can buy right now,” names the following models. The table shows only what that article reported. Where it gave no detail, the cell says so rather than filling the gap with later specifications.

The selection was not built on a strict technical category. Time+Tide itself flagged the Hublot as a partial fit and treated the Seiko as an exception to the no-waitlist rule. The article was also not a controlled comparison: it did not test the watches against each other, and it gave no movement, water resistance or dial data for most entries.
Model notes
Tudor Heritage Black Bay Steel
This is the best-documented model on the 2019 list. Time+Tide gave two configurations: the leather-strap version at $4,160 and the bracelet version at $4,540, both at the time of publication. Those figures are 2019 launch-era prices and do not reflect any later change. Anyone comparing the Black Bay Steel today should work from the current manufacturer or authorized dealer price for the exact reference and strap they are considering.

Omega Seamaster Professional 300M Diver
Time+Tide described this diver as refreshed in 2018. The article did not list case dimensions, movement or price, so the 2018 refresh is the only configuration detail it supplied for this model.
Longines HydroConquest Automatic
The 2019 article gave a 43mm automatic case with black, blue and grey dial options. Dial choice is the main decision point for a buyer comparing this model with others on the list, because the article reported no other variant differences.

Seiko Diver’s Re-creation Limited Edition SLA033
This is the only entry on the list with a stated production number: 2,500 pieces. Time+Tide was clear that the watch did not technically have a waitlist in 2019, but argued that the limited run meant a buyer should act quickly rather than wait. A limited edition of this kind can sell out once the run is gone, so the 2019 availability does not carry forward.
Hublot Big Bang Steel Diamonds
Time+Tide included this watch while noting it is not entirely steel and not entirely a sports watch. Read it as a boundary case in the list rather than a clean match for the steel sports category.

Chopard Alpine Eagle: the same scarcity, a different story
Chopard’s Alpine Eagle is not on the Time+Tide list, but Gear Patrol covered it in the same period as a steel sports watch that buyers could consider. Its October 1, 2019 article, updated June 1, 2021, reported two case sizes, 41mm and 36mm, with 100m water resistance and automatic in-house movements. The steel versions used Lucent Steel A223, and the article said the collection’s steel included recycled stainless steel. The 41mm models were 9.7mm thick.
These are launch-era details from a 2019 article with a 2021 update. They describe the configuration at that time and should be checked against Chopard’s own product information before being treated as current.

Checking availability today
A 2019 list tells you which models were positioned as obtainable then. To judge a purchase now, check the following for each model:
- The current price and strap or bracelet configuration on the manufacturer’s website, since 2019 figures are not current.
- Whether the exact reference is listed as in stock at an authorized dealer, not just on a marketplace or resale site.
- For limited editions such as the Seiko SLA033, whether the production run has been completed or is still being sold.
- Whether the dial, case size and bracelet you want are the versions still in production, because the 2019 article described only some options.
If a model is out of stock at authorized dealers, the Alpine Eagle example shows the usual alternative: a comparable steel sports watch from another brand, judged by case size, water resistance and movement rather than by name alone.
