The dispute is over the Ninth Annual Swiss Watcher, a Swiss watch-market report published by Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM) with consultancy LuxeConsult on February 18, 2026. Swatch Group challenged its estimates and conclusions in an open letter dated February 27. The disagreement highlights a basic difficulty in watch-industry analysis: brand-level sales and profits are often estimates, not figures outsiders can verify against published accounts.
What is the Morgan Stanley–Swatch Group controversy?
Swatch Group says the Swiss Watcher relies on unsuitable or opaque sources, uses methods that are not sufficiently transparent, and presents estimates with more precision than the available evidence warrants. It also disputes particular claims about the performance of Swatch-owned brands, including Tissot and Longines.
The Swiss Watcher is an analyst report, not a set of audited brand accounts. Swatch’s response is a counterclaim from a company with a direct interest in how its brands are represented. The materials available do not independently settle the disputed brand-level figures.
Why are Swiss watch brand estimates difficult to verify?
Many Swiss watch brands are privately held and do not publish detailed financial results. Even public groups such as Swatch Group generally report at group level rather than disclosing ordinary sales and profit figures for each brand. Analysts therefore work with incomplete information.

Coverage describes the Swiss Watcher’s approach as combining public data and export information with company statements, conversations and industry contacts, then estimating figures where direct data is unavailable. Such estimates can help readers compare a fragmented market, but outsiders may not be able to reproduce or check each brand figure without access to the underlying inputs and methods.
That makes it important to distinguish among a group’s published results, an analyst’s brand-level estimate, and a company’s response to that estimate. They are different kinds of evidence, not interchangeable numbers.

What figures does Swatch dispute?
In its February 27, 2026 letter, Swatch says the report’s brand-turnover estimates differ from its own figures by an average of 24%, with individual deviations ranging from −53% to +46%. Those comparisons are Swatch’s account of the discrepancy; the available coverage does not provide an independently audited, brand-by-brand reconciliation.
| Issue | Swiss Watcher figure as described in coverage | Swatch Group’s response | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand turnover estimates | Brand-level estimates for Swatch brands | Swatch says the average deviation is 24%, ranging from −53% to +46% | Swatch’s stated comparison; no independent audited reconciliation is established in the available reporting. |
| Tissot, 2025 | Estimated sales decline of 5% | Swatch says turnover grew by 3% | The two figures are opposing claims; the available coverage does not independently resolve them. |
| Longines, 2025 | Reported as becoming loss-making | Swatch says Longines reported a 16.6% profit margin on net sales | Swatch’s claim, not an independently verified brand-level result in the available coverage. |
Separately, Swatch Group’s investor page reports group net sales of CHF 6,280 million for 2025. That is a group-level figure, not a disclosure of the individual turnover or profit of Tissot, Longines or another Swatch brand. Swatch Group’s investor information

What did Swatch say about possible legal action?
Swatch’s letter said: “The research includes statements about sales development and profits of our companies that could seriously undermine customer and retailer trust. Some of these wrong statements are so severe that in addition to communication measures, legal action should be considered.” This is Swatch Group’s position, not a court finding.
Swatch’s official investor page lists the February 27 open letter, an MSIM answer dated March 5, 2026, and a second Swatch letter dated March 9. The listed correspondence establishes that the exchange continued; it does not, by itself, establish that a lawsuit was filed. The available reporting does not establish the substance of MSIM’s March 5 answer. Swatch Group’s investor information

How should readers assess the competing claims?
- Start with the type of figure. Swatch Group’s reported 2025 net sales are a group result; the Swiss Watcher’s brand numbers are estimates; Swatch’s corrections are counterclaims.
- Ask what inputs can be checked. Public accounts and export data may be traceable, while conversations and industry contacts may not be independently reproducible by readers.
- Do not mistake precision for certainty. A specific percentage can still be an estimate when brand-level disclosures are unavailable.
- Keep unresolved figures unresolved. Swatch’s examples raise concrete questions about the report, but the available evidence does not independently validate every counterfigure or establish which disputed brand numbers are correct.
The Swiss Watcher itself is described in coverage as intended for MSIM clients and is not publicly available there for readers to inspect. The full text of Swatch’s letter is available through a third-party transcription, while the official investor page confirms the correspondence timeline and group-level financial context.
