Summer Splash: Tudor Pelagos FXD vs. Serica 5303-3 vs. Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK005

Fratello’s 2022 Summer Splash final pitted Tudor’s Pelagos FXD against Serica’s 5303-3 and Seiko’s orange SSK005. Here’s what each offers and how to choose.

The 2022 Summer Splash final put three very different summer watches to a reader vote: Jorg’s dive-focused Tudor Pelagos FXD, Nacho’s versatile Serica 5303-3 and the community’s orange Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK005. There is no evidence-based overall winner here—the contest was an editorial debate, not a controlled comparison. The best pick depends on whether you value a dive-watch feel, flexible travel timing or a bright dial with GMT utility.

What the Summer Splash final actually compared

Fratello published the final on July 6, 2022, as the culmination of its Summer Splash reader poll. Jorg made the case for the Tudor Pelagos FXD, Nacho backed the Serica 5303-3, and readers had selected the orange-dial Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK005 as a wild card. The original question was which watch should be crowned “king of the summer.” Fratello’s 2022 final

That setup matters: it records preferences and arguments, not results from side-by-side testing. The three watches also serve different purposes, so the useful question is not which one wins every category, but which set of trade-offs fits your summer.

How the three watches differ

Tudor Pelagos FXD: dive-first character

In the 2022 article, Jorg’s case for the Pelagos FXD centered on its titanium construction, light-wearing feel, stated 200m water resistance and association with the Marine Nationale. Its fixed strap bars are a defining practical constraint: they rule out ordinary spring-bar strap swaps. Fratello’s writer suggested NATO or Zulu-style straps as fitting options. These are descriptions and opinions from the 2022 article, not a current specification check.

#1 Best Overall
SEIKO SSK001 Automatic Watch for Men - 5 Sports GMT, SKX Series - Blue
  • BLUE DIAL: this handsome men’s watch features a striking deep blue dial with luminous dial indicator hands and markers and date calendar to keep you organized
  • BLUE & BLACK BEZEL: with a 24-hour bezel and easy-to-read fourth hand, this GMT watch helps you keep time as you travel
  • DURABLE UTILITY: these versatile men’s wrist watches feature a 42.5mm stainless steel watch case and bracelet, for a classic, timeless look.
  • WATER-RESISTANT: this rugged sports watch is water-resistant up to 100 meters
  • 4R34 CALIBER: equipped with the reliable 4R34 caliber, these automatic watches for men ensure the most accurate in self winding timekeeping, with 41 hours of reserve power and manual winding option

Choose the FXD if the fixed-lug design and dive-oriented identity appeal more than conventional strap flexibility. Confirm the exact FXD reference’s current specifications and attachment options with Tudor before buying.

Serica 5303-3: a bezel for elapsed time and a second zone

Nacho’s 2022 pick was the blue-on-blue Serica 5303-3, presented as a more versatile summer option. Its bezel’s 12-hour ring can be used to track a second time zone, while standard lugs allow more conventional strap changes. Fratello also described it as less expensive than the Tudor at the time; that is historical context, not a current price comparison.

Serica’s current 5303 collection page describes the collection as water resistant to 300m and anti-magnetic, with a luminous graduated bezel for elapsed-time use and a second time zone. Serica says its three-part soft-iron cage raises magnetic resistance from 4,800 A/m to above 50,000 A/m. Those are manufacturer claims; verify that the details apply to the exact 5303-3 variant you are considering.

Rank #2
Seiko 5 Sports Field GMT "Sports Style" Mechanical Automatic Winding (Hand Winding Included) Men's, Case: Silver / Dial: White, Bracelet Type
  • Comes with individual box
  • 24 hour hand (dual time display function)
  • Day difference + 45 to -35 seconds
  • Mechanical automatic movement (with hand winding)
  • Lasts approximately 41 hours on maximum winding

Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK005: color and caller-GMT utility

The SSK005 is the vivid wild card, recognizable by its orange dial. In the final, its appeal was bright summer color paired with a caller-GMT travel function. Against watches chosen for a dive-focused comparison, its water resistance was presented as comparatively limited. The available sources do not establish a current official specification for the SSK005, so check Seiko’s listing for the exact reference rather than borrowing figures from another GMT model.

Choose by how you will wear it

  • For a dive-watch-oriented choice: the FXD was the final’s dive-first option, with fixed lugs that narrow strap choices.
  • For a second time zone and strap flexibility: the 5303-3 combines a bezel-based second-time-zone function with standard lugs, according to Fratello’s article and Serica’s current collection description.
  • For color and a caller GMT: the SSK005 brings the orange dial and travel-time function, but verify its water-resistance rating for your intended use.
  • For budget: compare live prices in your market. The article’s price relationship was from 2022, and Serica’s current euro prices are market- and time-dependent.
  • For comfort and fit: try the specific watch on if possible; the final does not provide a controlled wear or sizing comparison.

What the vote cannot tell you

The final does not establish a technical winner, a durability ranking or which watch is best for every wearer. It captures the participating writers’ preferences and the community’s selection of the Seiko as a wild card. Even the article’s reference to a prior Tudor-versus-Doxa vote—67% to 33%—is a result Fratello reported in that 2022 article, not a broader measure of watch buyers.

Current product pages for other watches cannot fill the specification gaps: Tudor’s surfaced Black Bay 54 page is not a Pelagos FXD, and Seiko’s SPB534 1968 Heritage Diver’s GMT page is not the SSK005. Check the exact reference, regional availability and current price before purchase rather than treating those separate models as substitutes.
