There is no verified Swatch-versus-Patek choice behind the watches discussed here. The more revealing question is what a leader’s watch signals: practicality, approachability, or luxury. Reported examples range from a Timex digital watch and an Apple Watch to a Rolex Datejust—while some Australian watch identifications remain guesses.
Swatch and Patek Philippe represent different ideas of a watch
Swatch Group dates the first Swatch to 1983, describing it as a low-cost, high-tech, artistic Swiss-made “second watch.” The first model had 51 components, according to the company’s official history. That origin makes Swatch a useful symbol of accessible, casual design—not evidence that a particular leader wore one.
Patek Philippe is not a single style of watch. Its official collection and Watch Finder lists families including Calatrava, Nautilus, Aquanaut, and Grand Complications; the finder marks some models as discontinued. The range makes “Patek” an imprecise shorthand for luxury rather than one specific look. These sources do not establish a like-for-like current price or quality comparison with Swatch.
So “what would you wear if you were President?” is a question about public image as much as taste. A modest or practical watch may read as unassuming; an expensive-looking one may attract attention to status. Those are interpretations, not measured effects on voters.

What watches have U.S. presidents and Australian leaders been reported wearing?
Australia is a parliamentary system, so Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison were prime ministers, not presidents. The examples below also vary in how firmly the watch has been identified.
| Leader | Reported watch | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Bill Clinton, U.S. president | Timex Ironman Triathlon | Time+Tide reports that Clinton wore one while president. |
| Barack Obama, U.S. president | Jorg Gray 6500 chronograph | Time+Tide reports that Secret Service agents gave it to him. Separately, the Obama Presidential Library catalog records a Prim wristwatch as a gift from Czech prime minister Mirek Topolánek; that gift entry does not establish that Obama wore it. |
| Joe Biden, U.S. president | Steel, blue-dial Rolex Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet | Hodinkee documented the watch at Biden’s inauguration on 20 January 2021. |
| Malcolm Turnbull, former Australian prime minister | Apple Watch; possibly a vintage Rolex Bubble Back | Time+Tide reports the Apple Watch and labels the Rolex identification a guess. |
| Scott Morrison, former Australian prime minister | Possibly a TAG Heuer Formula 1 | Time+Tide presents this as speculation based on unclear images. |
The Clinton, Obama, Turnbull, and Morrison claims come from Time+Tide’s article about leaders’ watches; its uncertain identifications should not be treated as confirmed. The Prim gift is recorded in the Obama Presidential Library artifact catalog. Biden’s inauguration watch was separately reported by Hodinkee.

What a leader’s watch can—and cannot—tell you
Public image is a reading, not proof of intent
A digital Timex or smartwatch can suggest utility or everyday familiarity, while a Rolex may be read as a more formal or luxury choice. But appearance alone does not prove why someone chose a watch, whether it was personally owned, or how the public responded. No statistic here measures how watch choice affects voter opinion.
Practicality and dress are part of the picture
Hodinkee describes Biden’s Datejust as legible, accurate, date-displaying, and versatile with a suit. A smartwatch adds digital features; a conventional watch offers a different wearing experience. The examples show that leaders’ watches need not fit one uniform idea of presidential style.

Evidence quality matters
A dated observation at a public event, such as the inauguration report, is different from identifying a model in an unclear photograph. An official gift record proves that an item was cataloged as a gift, not that its recipient wore it. Keep those distinctions in mind when treating a watch sighting as fact.

If the aim is to look approachable and favor an accessible, casual “second watch,” Swatch’s origin story fits that image. If the aim is to wear a watch from a brand with a broad range of luxury collections, Patek Philippe fits that different brief. Neither choice is inherently more presidential; the answer depends on the image and style you want, and the brand names alone do not settle questions of fit, price, or quality.
