A watch strap described as “synthetic” or “leather-backed” can refer to different constructions, and the distinction matters. Some leather bands have a synthetic-leather underside; others put a genuine-leather face over a rubber backing such as FKM. The backing may change how the strap handles perspiration, but it does not make a leather-faced strap suitable for swimming. Check both layers, fit, and the maker’s water guidance for the exact strap.
What does “synthetic straps with leather backing” mean?
The phrase can describe more than one design. Look at the material on the side that faces your wrist and the material on the visible face; “hybrid” by itself does not tell you what either layer is made of.
- Synthetic-leather backing: A band may have a leather face and a synthetic-leather underside, or be made entirely from synthetic leather. Seiko says these constructions can resist perspiration better than genuine leather, but does not quantify the difference. [Seiko’s care guidance]
- Leather face over rubber: Some hybrid straps pair a genuine-leather top with an FKM rubber underside. This keeps leather visible while rubber touches the wrist; the leather face still needs care and remains relevant to water exposure. - Textile face over rubber: A textile-and-FKM construction is another kind of hybrid. Monstraps lists a ballistic-nylon face over FKM; its water-use claims apply to that particular product, not to every strap containing FKM. [Monstraps’ listing]
- Synthetic leather-like smartwatch band: Samsung’s Brazil listing describes an “eco-leather” and fluoroelastomer hybrid, clarifying that the materials are synthetic and imitate leather. That listing names Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 families; it does not establish compatibility or availability in every region. [Samsung Brazil’s listing]
Does a synthetic or rubber backing make a leather strap waterproof?
No. A more sweat-resistant underside is not proof that the complete strap can be immersed. Seiko advises against bathing, swimming, or working with water while wearing a watch with a leather band, even if the watch itself is water-resistant. [Seiko’s care guidance]
For a leather-faced hybrid, follow the strap maker’s advice for the full construction. CNS, for example, cautions against sustained submersion for its leather-and-rubber hybrid. A textile face with rubber backing is a different product and may have different guidance; check its own listing rather than generalizing from the material name.

- Attachment and lug width: Check whether the strap is a straight-end universal style or shaped for a specific model, and confirm the watch’s lug width.
- Spring bars and clearance: Confirm the spring-bar diameter and whether there is enough room between the bar, lugs, and case. A strap can be too thick at the end even if its width matches.
- Length: Compare the strap’s stated lengths with your wrist circumference and where you want the buckle to sit.
- Thickness and taper: Check the thickness at the lugs and whether the strap tapers toward the buckle, especially if the watch has tight clearance.
- Buckle: Confirm the buckle width and whether the existing buckle can be reused.
- Hardware: Check whether quick-release bars are included or compatible, and follow the strap maker’s installation instructions.
- Materials: Read the listing for both face and underside materials; “hybrid” or “leather-backed” alone is ambiguous.
For context, Monstraps lists its ballistic-nylon/FKM strap at 22 mm lug width tapering to 20 mm, lengths of 125/75 mm, and thickness of 5.0 mm at the lugs tapering to 2.5 mm. It specifies a maximum spring-bar thickness of 2.0 mm and warns that short lugs or tight clearance can prevent fit. These are specifications for that listing, not universal sizing standards. DASSARI lists its own leather-and-rubber model in widths from 19 mm through 24 mm. Check the live listing for the exact dimensions and compatible watches.

How to care for leather, rubber, and hybrid straps
Care should reflect the material that is exposed. For leather bands, Seiko recommends wiping off moisture and sweat promptly with a soft, dry cloth, letting the strap dry in a ventilated place after removal, and avoiding prolonged sunlight. It also says to avoid bathing, swimming, and water work with a leather-band watch. [Seiko’s care guidance]
TAG Heuer likewise advises avoiding frequent water contact, perfume, and cosmetics on leather, and recommends a soft, dry cloth and storage away from heat and sunlight. For rubber straps, it recommends rinsing with fresh water after exposure to salt or chlorinated water, then drying thoroughly. - Identify the face and underside materials, including whether the leather is genuine or synthetic.
- Read the maker’s water-use advice for the complete strap; do not infer it from the backing alone.
