Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 design is a system for balancing three aims: aesthetics, legibility and wearing comfort. The SLGB003 shows how that framework can shape a specific watch: product designer Akira Yoshida drew on a wintry Shinshu landscape for its dial, while controlling the pattern so it would not overwhelm the time display.
What is Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 design?
Grand Seiko says Evolution 9 was conceived in 2020 to develop the philosophy behind the brand’s established Grand Seiko Style. It is a continuation, not a claim that every Grand Seiko watch shares one fixed set of features. The framework brings together three goals: aesthetics, legibility and wearing comfort. Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 overview describes how those goals inform the collection’s forms and details.
Aesthetics: shaping light and shadow
In Grand Seiko’s account of Japanese aesthetics, light and shadow—and the gradations between them—are part of how a watch’s surfaces are experienced. The case is not simply a housing for the movement: its planes and finishes are intended to catch, reflect or soften light differently. That principle helps explain the contrast between brushed areas and distortion-free mirror-polished surfaces.
Legibility: make the time easy to pick out
Evolution 9’s legibility goal draws on pronounced hands and indexes associated with the first-generation Grand Seiko, according to the brand. The design vocabulary includes a broad hour hand, a minute hand reaching the minute track, and deeply grooved, diamond-cut indexes. These elements are meant to distinguish the time display clearly, including against a textured dial.

Wearing comfort: stability as part of design
Grand Seiko identifies a curved case profile, a low center of gravity and a wider bracelet as elements intended to help a watch sit stably on the wrist. The framework also calls for thickness appropriate to bracelet stability. These are the manufacturer’s design aims, not a guarantee that every wearer will find a watch comfortable; fit depends on the wearer and the particular watch.

Grand Seiko lists the following features as Evolution 9 elements. They are a vocabulary for reading the design, not a checklist that every Grand Seiko model must meet.

Who is Akira Yoshida, and what did he design?
Grand Seiko identifies Akira Yoshida as a product designer. The company says he joined in 2015, worked on Seiko brand design for overseas markets, and has been involved in Grand Seiko design since 2018. His listed work includes the SLGC001 Tentagraph, a limited-edition 45GS recreation, the SBGE295 and the SBGW301. Grand Seiko specifically credits him with designing the SLGB003. Yoshida’s official designer profile provides the company’s account of his career and projects.
That attribution matters: Yoshida’s documented work on the SLGB003 offers a way to understand how a designer applies Grand Seiko’s design language to one watch. It does not establish that he created the entire Evolution 9 philosophy.

How does the SLGB003 translate nature into a dial?
Grand Seiko describes the SLGB003’s dial as evoking soft frost on trees in a snowy Shinshu landscape, where Spring Drive is made. The motif also connects to Spring Drive’s smoothly gliding seconds hand. Yoshida’s account adds a more specific inspiration: the frost-covered forest of the Kirigamine Highlands near the workshop. Grand Seiko’s June 11, 2026 announcement attributes the design explanation to Yoshida.
The dial’s irregular pattern created a practical design constraint. A stronger pattern could give the surface more depth, but risk making the time harder to read. Grand Seiko says the pattern was controlled to preserve legibility. This is where the design framework becomes tangible: nature-inspired texture and visual richness have to coexist with hands and indexes that remain easy to distinguish.

Yoshida described the broader approach this way: “We aimed for a design that conveys the value of extraordinary precision, not only through the movement, but also through its exterior appearance. To achieve this, pursuing a compact size was a natural approach. By refining the machining and finishing precision of each component, we have achieved both a downsizing and thinning of the case while maintaining a high-quality feel and functionality,”
On the dial, he said: “In addition, the distinctive dial pattern, created through multilayer finishing to produce a sense of depth, draws inspiration from the frost-covered forest that spreads across the Kirigamine Highlands near our workshop. It expresses the serene and intricate world of this icy landscape and serves as an embodiment of the unique value of Spring Drive U.F.A., which is characterized by its high precision and the sweeping motion of the seconds hand.”

What recognition did the SLGB003 receive?
Grand Seiko announced on June 11, 2026, that the SLGB003 received the “Best of the Best” distinction in the Product Design category at the Red Dot Design Award 2026. The company’s announcement reproduces the jury’s description of the watch:
“Rooted in Japanese aesthetics, this watch reflects a balance of light and shadow through the interplay of Zaratsu-polished and brushed surfaces. A layered dial inspired by wintry forests adds poetic depth, while the compact Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2 ensures exceptional precision. Together, these elements express refined craftsmanship and nature-inspired beauty in the Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive U.F.A. It is powered by Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2, which boasts an annual accuracy of ±20 seconds, making it the most accurate wristwatch movement powered by a mainspring today.*”
The movement comparison is Grand Seiko’s claim, qualified in the announcement as based on the company’s research and current as of June 2026. It should be read as an attributed, time-bound comparison, not as an independently verified universal ranking. The same announcement says more than 18,000 entries are submitted to the Red Dot awards each year; that figure describes the competition’s scale, not consumer response to the watch.
How to read the design choices
The Evolution 9 framework is useful when looking at a watch as a set of related decisions rather than a collection of luxury-finishing terms. On the SLGB003, the relevant questions are how clearly the hands and indexes stand out from the dial, how the layered pattern expresses its landscape inspiration without obscuring the time, and how the case and bracelet are intended to balance presence with stability. Grand Seiko explains the aims behind those choices; its published descriptions do not establish independent wearer testing or a standalone measure of Evolution 9’s success.
