The 41 mm TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 reviewed by Hodinkee in 2014 was praised for its comfortable, low-sitting fit, readable dial, and crisp chronograph controls. Its approximately 50-hour power reserve—and the reviewer’s estimate of about 40 hours with frequent chronograph use—come from that 2014 review, not a current specification sheet. The title does not identify a particular reference number, and the review’s $5,400 price is historical, not a current offer.
What is the Carrera Calibre 1887?
The Carrera began in 1963. TAG Heuer’s account traces the name to the Carrera Panamericana story and identifies Reference 2447 as the first Carrera, designed with legibility in mind and distinguished by its lugs. The brand recounts that Jack Heuer learned about the race at Sebring before registering Carrera as the name for a new chronograph; this is TAG Heuer’s historical account, rather than an independently established account here. TAG Heuer’s 2024 magazine feature provides that history.
TAG Heuer says the Calibre 1887 Carrera arrived in 2010, looking back to the earliest Carrera rather than simply updating an intervening catalogue design. Its listed cues include twelve applied hour markers, polished steel matchstick hands, an inner minute-and-seconds track, and angled lugs. The brand says the track’s quarter-second divisions correspond to the movement’s 28,800 vibrations per hour. TAG Heuer’s vintage collection account describes these design details.
What is it like on the wrist?
Case and fit
In Hodinkee’s one-week 2014 test, the 41 mm watch sat low and felt comfortable to the reviewer. The angular lugs curved beneath the wrist, and the deployment clasp offered useful room to adjust the fit. Those are observations about that test watch, not a guarantee that the case or clasp will suit every wrist or strap setup. Hodinkee’s review by Stephen Pulvirent documents the hands-on impressions.

Dial and legibility
The tested watch had a black dial, circularly grained subdials, applied metal markers, a tachymeter scale, and quarter-second markings. The reviewer found it easy to read in most lighting, but less successful in low light. The polished case and markers also struck the reviewer as shinier than preferred. These judgments describe one reviewer’s experience, not an objective measure of legibility or finish.
Chronograph controls and date
The review describes crisp start-and-stop pusher action and a clean reset. The date could be adjusted at the crown’s first position, and a sapphire caseback exposed the movement. These are details reported from the reviewed example.

What does the Calibre 1887 do?
TAG Heuer describes Calibre 1887 as an integrated chronograph movement with a column wheel and an oscillating pinion associated with the brand’s 1887 patent history. The company says it powered a new generation of Carrera chronographs and later served as the basis for Heuer 01. The brand’s vintage collection account outlines that description.
Hodinkee reported that the reviewed movement beat at 4 Hz and had an approximately 50-hour power reserve. The reviewer estimated roughly 40 hours when the chronograph was used frequently. Treat both reserve figures as the 2014 review’s report about its watch, rather than a current manufacturer specification. Hodinkee also described automatic winding, a 30-minute counter, a 12-hour counter, running seconds, and a date.
