The TAG Heuer Monaco V4 Tourbillon uses a microscopic belt to rotate its tourbillon cage—the rotating structure at the heart of the complication. TAG Heuer specifies a 0.07 mm rubber-and-metal belt; the Fondation du Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) calls the micro-belt-driven tourbillon a “world first.” That is the claim’s precise scope: the belt drives the cage, not every part of the watch.
What makes the Monaco V4 Tourbillon belt-driven?
A tourbillon’s cage holds the regulating components and rotates as part of the mechanism. In this Monaco V4 variant, a microscopic belt turns that cage. TAG Heuer’s official magazine describes it as a rubber-and-metal belt just 0.07 mm thick, and says it rotates the tourbillon cage: TAG Heuer Official Magazine, “Everything you need to know about the tourbillon,” September 27, 2024.
“Belt-driven” should not be read as meaning the entire watch runs on belts. The specific mechanism at issue is the drive to the tourbillon cage.
What does “first” mean here?
GPHG describes the Monaco V4 Tourbillon as using a micro-belt to drive the tourbillon “in a world first” in its Monaco V4 Tourbillon entry. This is an attributed claim by the horology institution and TAG Heuer, not a separately established universal priority claim. The evidence supports describing this model as presented by GPHG as the first tourbillon with a micro-belt driving its cage; it does not support broadening that wording to every belt-related innovation in watchmaking.

How it fits the Monaco V4 concept
The tourbillon builds on the Monaco V4’s broader mechanical architecture. TAG Heuer says the V4 concept was unveiled at BaselWorld in 2004 and describes a transmission-belt system, a linear winding system, and four barrels mounted on ball bearings on its Monaco V4 collection page. The company’s historical timeline says the tourbillon option marked the concept’s tenth anniversary: TAG Heuer history.
That context matters: the tourbillon model is not simply a conventional Monaco with a tourbillon added. It applies the V4’s unusual belt-based approach to the mechanism that rotates the cage.

GPHG identifies the watch as reference WAW2081.FC6348 and records a 2014 launch date. Its entry lists these specifications:

What the available details do—and don’t—establish
The mechanism and reference make the Monaco V4 Tourbillon distinctive, but the cited sources do not establish a current retail price, current stock, or present-day availability. GPHG’s entry documents the model; it is not evidence that a particular retailer has one for sale. Anyone assessing a specific watch should verify the reference and condition directly with the seller rather than infer availability from the historical record.
