Verdict: The TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5 is a beautifully finished luxury smartwatch, but it is not the most capable smartwatch at its price. Its appeal lies in TAG Heuer’s round watch design, premium materials, brand identity and improved iPhone compatibility—not in a large app ecosystem, contactless payments, LTE or class-leading fitness tools.
That makes the E5 a sensible purchase for someone who wants a TAG Heuer that can display notifications, handle basic calls, track wellness and workouts, and look more like a conventional watch than an Apple Watch. If apps, payments, phone-free connectivity, advanced training analysis or maximum value matter more, Apple, Garmin or Samsung are stronger choices.

What is the TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5?
The Calibre E5 is the current TAG Heuer Connected generation as of August 2026. It should not be confused with the previous Calibre E4, which runs Wear OS 3. The E5 replaces Google’s wearable platform with TAG Heuer’s proprietary TAG Heuer OS and is designed to work with both iPhone and Android phones.

That change affects almost every buying decision. An E4 buyer gets access to the broader Wear OS and Google-services environment, while an E5 buyer gets a more controlled interface built around TAG Heuer watch faces, sports, golf and wellness features. Older E1–E3 models are mainly used-market propositions and should not be assumed to share the E5’s compatibility or software features. TAG Heuer’s current collection also includes Golf, Formula 1, New Balance and TaylorMade editions; branding, materials and bundled accessories can differ between references.
Design and build quality
The E5’s strongest argument is that it feels like a luxury watch before it feels like a gadget. Its round profile is a natural fit for TAG Heuer’s design language and a clear visual alternative to the rectangular Apple Watch. Depending on the reference, the case uses fine-brushed and polished steel or titanium, with sapphire crystal and, on at least some 45mm models, a ceramic bezel. Physical pushers reinforce the watch-like experience, while the straps are interchangeable.
Both sizes are rated to 50 metres of water resistance. That is useful for ordinary swimming when permitted by TAG Heuer’s care guidance, but it is not the same as being universally waterproof. Water resistance does not automatically cover hot tubs, saunas, saltwater, underwater button presses or water damage under warranty. Dry the watch and charging contacts fully before charging, and consult the model-specific care and warranty terms.
Thickness is more important than the diameter suggests. The 40mm steel reference is 14mm thick and the 45mm steel reference is 14.8mm thick, according to TAG Heuer’s specifications. The smaller model is visually more restrained but is not an especially slim watch under a shirt cuff. Buyers should judge the case against their wrist and wardrobe rather than assuming that 40mm means compact.
Sapphire protects the display well against scratches, but it does not make the bezel or case immune to marks. The luxury premium is principally for design, finishing, materials, TAG Heuer branding and the ownership experience. The E5 is a digital watch; it should not be evaluated as though it contains the mechanical watchmaking components of a conventional TAG Heuer.
40mm versus 45mm
| Specification | 40mm | 45mm |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 1.2-inch OLED | 1.39-inch OLED |
| Resolution | 390 × 390 pixels | 454 × 454 pixels |
| Pixel density | 326 dpi | 326 dpi |
| Battery | 300mAh | 419mAh |
| Claimed endurance | Up to 1.5 days full performance; up to two days Low Power | 17 hours in Running sport mode; up to three days Low Power |
| Thickness | 14mm | 14.8mm |
| Water resistance | 50m | 50m |
Choose the 40mm for a smaller wrist, a quieter visual presence and a smaller screen. Choose the 45mm for easier reading, a stronger luxury-sports look and the longer claimed Low Power endurance. The 45mm is not simply a larger version: its 419mAh battery and larger display change how practical it is for workouts and daily use.
Do not read “up to three days” as normal mixed-use battery life. TAG Heuer qualifies endurance according to settings, brightness, notifications, apps, Wi-Fi and charging cycles. Full-performance use, GPS workouts, calls, sleep tracking and an always-on display can reduce it substantially.
Display and controls
Both models use OLED panels beneath sapphire crystal at 326 dpi. The specifications establish sharpness and resolution, but brightness in direct sunlight, always-on behaviour, touch response, haptics, animation smoothness and practical complication legibility are the details that determine daily satisfaction.
TAG Heuer’s watch faces are central to the E5 experience. They provide the visual identity that mainstream smartwatches cannot replicate in the same way, while complications let the wearer surface information without opening an app. The trade-off is that a beautiful face cannot compensate for missing services. Buyers should prioritise the face library and interaction style only if they are comfortable with a deliberately limited platform.
TAG Heuer OS: the important compromise
TAG Heuer OS is a proprietary system, not a TAG Heuer-themed version of Wear OS. It is tailored to the E5 hardware and supports TAG Heuer’s own watch faces, Golf, Sports and Wellness functions. A narrower system can also feel more coherent because there are fewer background services and fewer layers of Google software.

However, leaving Wear OS means giving up the breadth readers may expect from an expensive smartwatch. TAG Heuer’s official FAQ states that the E5 does not support contactless payments. TechRadar’s launch coverage reports that the watch also lacks third-party apps and LTE. Those omissions should be treated as core buying considerations, not footnotes.
- No contactless payments: the E5 cannot be treated as a Google Wallet-capable Wear OS watch.
- No full Wear OS app catalogue: do not assume access to Spotify, Google Maps, WhatsApp or other third-party services.
- No identified LTE option: phone-free calling and data should not be assumed; verify the exact reference before buying.
- Limited offline independence: music, navigation, messaging and calls may depend heavily on the paired phone.
- Greater platform dependence: future functionality and compatibility depend on TAG Heuer maintaining TAG Heuer OS and its companion apps.
The practical conclusion is simple: the E5 is a luxury watch with smartwatch functions, not a conventional smartwatch with a luxury logo. Its interface may be attractive and focused, but it is not a substitute for a mature app ecosystem.
iPhone and Android compatibility
Current US TAG Heuer product pages list iOS 18 or later and Android 13 or later, alongside Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi and GNSS. The E5 is also presented as “Made for iPhone,” a significant change from earlier TAG Heuer Wear OS models. TechRadar reported TAG Heuer’s claim that about 70% of its users pair their watches with iPhones; that is a company statement, not independent market research.
For iPhone owners
The E5 is more relevant to iPhone users than the E4 because it is designed for cross-platform pairing rather than depending on Wear OS’s historically weaker iOS experience. It can provide notifications, calls, wellness functions and TAG Heuer watch features, but “Made for iPhone” does not mean Apple Watch feature parity. Apple users should expect differences in replies, health-data integration, payments, navigation, app support, firmware updates and Find My behaviour.
For Android owners
Android compatibility does not restore the Google ecosystem. An Android user should not assume Google Wallet, Wear OS apps, Google Maps or the same services available on a Galaxy Watch. Pairing and notification behaviour can also vary by phone manufacturer and Android version. Confirm the minimum operating-system requirement and the exact functions supported by the companion application before purchase.
For either platform, verify initial pairing, notification reliability, call handling, voice-assistant access, health-data synchronisation, firmware updates, phone-finding and background battery impact. These are software experiences that product specifications alone cannot settle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHealth, fitness, GPS and golf
The E5 includes a heart-rate sensor, compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone, altimeter and GNSS. Listed features include sleep tracking, blood-oxygen-related monitoring, breathing rate, heart-rate variability, running, cycling, swimming, workouts, hiking and TAG Heuer Golf. TAG Heuer describes the 45mm model as having improved GPS, high-precision activity tracking and enhanced wellness functions.
Those are feature and manufacturer-performance claims, not evidence of medical accuracy. SpO2, HRV, sleep and breathing-rate data should be treated as wellness information, not diagnosis. GPS availability also does not prove GPS accuracy, and a heart-rate sensor is not equivalent to a clinically validated monitor.
The E5 makes sense for basic activity awareness and branded sports presentation. Garmin remains the safer direction for serious training plans, endurance metrics and long battery life, while Apple and Samsung generally offer deeper health-platform integration. There is not enough independent controlled testing in the available evidence to claim that the E5 beats those watches for GPS, heart-rate or sleep accuracy.
Golf may be the most differentiated sports use case. TAG Heuer has an established Golf application and dedicated editions, but buyers should confirm course coverage, subscription requirements, shot tracking, update availability, battery drain over a full round and whether the standard E5 offers the same functions. A special-edition name does not by itself prove unique hardware.

Battery life and charging
The 40mm has a 300mAh battery and TAG Heuer claims up to 1.5 days at full performance, up to two days in Low Power mode and approximately 90 minutes for a full charge. The 45mm has a 419mAh battery; TAG Heuer lists 17 hours in Running sport mode, up to three days in Low Power mode and approximately 90 minutes for a full charge. Some descriptions say 30 minutes can provide up to a day of autonomy in certain conditions.
These figures are not directly comparable. A meaningful ownership plan depends on the display mode, notifications, GPS sessions, calls, Wi-Fi, sleep tracking and whether Low Power mode is acceptable. Users who track sleep may face a charging conflict: the watch needs charging overnight, but overnight is also when sleep data is collected. The proprietary charging puck also means the buyer should keep it with the watch when travelling.
The 45mm is the better endurance choice, but neither model should be purchased for multi-day intensive GPS use. Before committing, ask whether a short evening charge can reliably cover the night and following morning, and whether the reduced functions of Low Power mode fit your routine.
Calls, notifications and voice control
The E5 includes a microphone and supports call management and a voice-assistant shortcut according to TAG Heuer’s product information. The useful questions are whether calls require the phone nearby, how clearly the speaker works outdoors, whether notifications remain available, whether replies are possible and which reply methods are supported.
Do not assume standalone calling. The available coverage identifies no LTE connectivity, so phone-free calls and data should be verified against the exact model rather than inferred from the presence of a microphone.
E5 versus E4
| Issue | Calibre E5 | Calibre E4 |
|---|---|---|
| Software | Proprietary TAG Heuer OS | Wear OS 3 |
| Phone positioning | Designed for iPhone and Android compatibility | Older Wear OS-based compatibility |
| Apps | Much narrower platform; third-party app support should not be assumed | Broader Wear OS and Google ecosystem |
| Payments | Contactless payments unsupported, according to TAG Heuer | Depends on the E4 model, region and Wear OS service support |
| Buying logic | Choose for current hardware, TAG Heuer OS and iPhone positioning | Choose only if Wear OS and Google services matter more, accepting older hardware and support risks |
Older E4 reviews can be misleading because their descriptions of Google apps, Wear OS menus and payments do not automatically apply to the E5. TAG Heuer’s older Connected collection documents the previous generation separately.
How it compares with the alternatives
- Apple Watch: the better choice for iPhone integration, apps, payments and optional cellular. The E5 wins only if a round luxury-watch design and TAG Heuer identity matter more than platform depth.
- Garmin: the better choice for training tools, endurance and serious fitness analysis. The E5 is more focused on premium watch construction and style.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch: the stronger Android and Wear OS option, especially for Google services and apps. It is less compelling for iPhone users and less distinctive as a luxury object.
- Conventional TAG Heuer: a mechanical or quartz watch avoids software obsolescence and frequent charging, but provides none of the E5’s notifications or tracking.
The E5’s price is therefore not justified by specifications alone. It is a premium for design, materials, finishing, brand and the pleasure of wearing a TAG Heuer-shaped digital watch. Smartwatch technology ages faster than mechanical watchmaking, so long-term software support and eventual resale value deserve consideration.
Who should buy the TAG Heuer Connected E5?
Buy it if you want a luxury round watch, prefer TAG Heuer’s design to Apple Watch’s shape, use an iPhone or Android phone within the stated requirements, and consider notifications, calls, basic sports tracking, wellness and watch faces sufficient. It is particularly logical for TAG Heuer owners, motorsport enthusiasts and buyers who value a premium object more than an exhaustive feature list.
