The 2026 model is not simply another chronograph with racing colors. Its solar movement, compact case and date display distinguish it from the conventional quartz chronographs that dominate the Formula 1 Indy 500 back catalogue. The 2024 reference CAZ101AW.BA0842 is a useful size and mechanism comparison, but it should not be confused with every Indy 500 chronograph released by TAG Heuer. The official US product page identifies that reference as discontinued and recorded an original page price of $2,500; a current pre-owned price can differ substantially by condition, completeness and seller.
TAG Heuer’s Indy 500 partnership and release timeline
TAG Heuer says it became the Indianapolis 500’s Official Timekeeper and Scorer in 2004. In its 2024 account, the company described that season as its 19th year in the role and tied the launch of the 43 mm Formula 1 Chronograph Indy 500 Special Edition to the 108th running of the race.

That 2024 account reported 33 drivers and approximately 125,000 spectators. It also described Josef Newgarden’s final-lap winning pass as decided by 0.3417 seconds. These figures belong to TAG Heuer’s 2024 race coverage and describe that event, not a general attendance or margin record for every Indy 500.
The official collector guide lists Formula 1 Indy 500 editions for 2004, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. Carrera Indy 500 models are listed for 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The sequence shows two parallel collecting tracks: the more frequently issued Formula 1 line and scarcer Carrera editions.

Are earlier TAG Heuer Indy 500 watches collectible?
Yes, but “collectible” does not mean that every older example is rare or appreciating. Scarcity is clearest in the numbered Carrera releases: 100 pieces in 2016, 101 in 2017 and 102 in 2018. The 2015 Formula 1’s 3,000 pieces and the 2020 Formula 1’s 1,500 pieces are less scarce, although design, condition and demand can still make individual watches desirable.
What increases a pre-owned example’s appeal
- Correct reference and matching case, dial, bezel and bracelet or strap configuration.
- Original box, warranty card, service records and other papers that establish provenance.
- Unpolished or carefully serviced condition, with legible Indy 500 markings and intact bezel details.
- A limited-edition number that matches the paperwork where numbering is documented.
- A seller willing to provide movement, case-back and serial photographs and a return period.
What to verify before buying
- Compare the reference engraved on the watch with the reference in the documentation and the specification for that edition.
- Check that the case diameter, pushers, sub-dial layout, logo placement and bracelet match the correct Formula 1 or Carrera generation.
- Ask whether the movement has been serviced and whether replacement parts are original or later substitutes.
- Have an independent watchmaker or authorized service center inspect authenticity before the return window closes.
Older watches may be sold without complete papers, and the absence of paperwork does not by itself prove a watch is counterfeit. It does, however, reduce certainty and can affect resale. Authentication should be based on the complete watch, movement and provenance rather than on a box or a racing logo alone.
