Design: the left-side crown and the Monaco story
The square-cased Monaco’s most immediately distinctive detail is the crown on the left side. TAG Heuer explains that its placement was intended to show that manual winding was no longer necessary. The blue dial, twin silver chronograph counters and date at 6 give the CAW211P a recognizable layout, while the black perforated leather strap echoes a motorsport-inspired style.
TAG Heuer calls this watch the “original model” and connects the Monaco name with Steve McQueen and the film Le Mans. Those are the manufacturer’s historical framing claims. They should not be read to mean that this later CAW211P reference itself appeared in the 1969 film.

Calibre 11: what the specifications establish
TAG Heuer specifies an automatic Calibre 11 movement, a 40-hour power reserve and a 4 Hz beat rate. The listed chronograph functions include a 1/4-second indication and a 30-minute counter, alongside hours, minutes, seconds and date. Those figures describe the published configuration; they do not establish independent test results for accuracy, service condition or chronograph performance on any individual example.
In a review of the watch, Time+Tide described the movement as historically significant while judging it less advanced or elegant than some contemporary chronograph movements. That is the publication’s editorial view, not a TAG Heuer specification. Its point is that the appeal here includes the Calibre 11’s place in the Monaco story, not simply a claim of technical superiority.
