Yes—the Tudor Pelagos is worth considering if you want a technically specified titanium dive watch, but “underrated” is a judgment, not a demonstrated market fact. The Pelagos is a family, not one watch: the 39 mm model is the more compact option in TUDOR’s positioning, the standard 42 mm model offers a 500 m rating, and the FXD variants are purpose-built around underwater navigation. Choosing among them means weighing dimensions, bezel operation, intended use and reference-specific details—not relying on the family name or its Navy history alone.
What the Pelagos family includes
TUDOR’s current U.S. collection page lists the Pelagos 39, Pelagos Ultra, Pelagos LHD and standard black- and blue-dial Pelagos variants. The FXD is a distinct, purpose-specific branch of the family. Specs and configurations vary by reference, so a family-level description should not be treated as a promise that every Pelagos shares the same depth rating, bezel, case construction or strap setup.
TUDOR calls the line “amongst the most complete traditional mechanical divers’ watches available today.” That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independently measured ranking. The published specifications make a credible technical case; they do not establish popularity, resale performance or superiority over competing watches.

Pelagos 39: the compact, more versatile proposition
TUDOR specifies a 39 mm grade 2 titanium case, luminescent ceramic-composite monobloc hour markers, rapid adjustment at the clasp and a diver’s extension. The brand highlights sunray satin finishes on the dial and bezel and positions the watch as a meeting point between technical diving heritage and urban versatility. That describes TUDOR’s intended positioning; it does not mean the watch will fit every wrist or suit every use better than a larger model.
The 39 mm diameter is the clearest starting point if you want a smaller Pelagos. Case diameter alone cannot predict how a watch will wear, and the cited product page does not establish comparative comfort through wear testing. Review the full dimensions and try the exact reference if fit is decisive. TUDOR’s Pelagos 39 specifications and positioning
Standard 42 mm Pelagos: a higher-rated traditional configuration
A useful reference-specific example is the blue-dial M25600TB-0001. TUDOR lists a 42 mm titanium-and-steel satin-finished case, 22 mm lug width and 14.3 mm thickness, with 500 m (1,640 ft) water resistance. It has a titanium unidirectional bezel with a ceramic insert, a helium escape valve and date display. The movement is TUDOR Manufacture Calibre MT5612, COSC-certified, with approximately 70 hours of power reserve.

Those figures describe M25600TB-0001, not every Pelagos. In particular, do not transfer its 500 m rating, dimensions or construction to another reference without checking that model’s specification. A stated water-resistance rating is not a blanket assurance for every real-world dive or use condition. TUDOR’s specification for Pelagos reference M25600TB-0001

FXD stands for the extra-robust fixed strap bars, according to TUDOR. The brand says the original FXD was developed with a specialist French Navy unit for underwater navigation. Its bezel is not the standard unidirectional elapsed-time arrangement found on the cited 42 mm Pelagos: TUDOR describes a 120-notch bidirectional countdown bezel with retrograde 60-to-0 graduation.
TUDOR explicitly states that this FXD bezel does not correspond to the ISO 6425:2018 standard for divers’ watches because it is designed for a particular underwater-navigation method. It should not be described as a conventional unidirectional dive-timing bezel or as ISO-conforming. If you want the traditional elapsed-time bezel configuration, compare the exact standard Pelagos reference rather than assuming the FXD works the same way. TUDOR’s FXD and French Navy account

One documented FXD reference
For reference 25717N, TUDOR’s 2023 press specification lists a 42 mm titanium case, 12.75 mm thickness, 52 mm lug-to-lug and 200 m water resistance. It is supplied with a 22 mm fabric strap with self-gripping fastening and an additional black rubber strap. The listed movement is the COSC-certified MT5602, with approximately 70 hours of power reserve. These details apply to reference 25717N and that specification, not every later FXD.
How the choices differ
| Choice | What the cited material establishes | Best reason to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Pelagos 39 | 39 mm case; grade 2 titanium; clasp adjustment and diver’s extension | You prefer the smaller stated case diameter and TUDOR’s more versatile positioning. |
| Standard Pelagos M25600TB-0001 | 42 mm case; 14.3 mm thick; 500 m rating; unidirectional bezel; titanium-and-steel case | You want the cited traditional configuration and its reference-specific depth rating. |
| Pelagos FXD 25717N | 42 mm case; 12.75 mm thick; 52 mm lug-to-lug; 200 m rating; fixed bars and bidirectional countdown bezel | You value its navigation-focused design and fabric/rubber strap arrangement. |
| Pelagos Ultra, LHD and other standard variants | Current collection listings and U.S. suggested prices are shown; the cited material does not establish a full, comparable specification set for each. | Check the exact reference’s dimensions, bezel, rating and supplied attachment before deciding. |
This is a comparison of documented configurations, not a wear test or a judgment of which model is objectively best. Diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug are useful measurements, but they cannot alone establish fit or comfort.

What the French Navy connection does—and does not—tell you
TUDOR’s history says the relationship with the French Navy began in 1956, when its G.E.R.S. received Oyster Prince Submariners for evaluation. The brand says it became official supplier in 1961, maintained that status through the 1980s and renewed the relationship in 2021 with the FXD. This is TUDOR’s account of its own history; it does not independently verify military use for every current Pelagos model. TUDOR’s diving-watch history and TUDOR’s FXD history
The heritage may matter to a buyer, but it does not replace practical questions: which dimensions suit you, whether you want a countdown or elapsed-time bezel, what depth rating the specific reference carries, and whether its bracelet or strap arrangement fits your needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Pelagos really underrated?
There is a reason the claim can sound plausible: the line spans a relatively compact titanium model, a higher-rated traditional configuration and specialist FXD variants, with meaningful differences in their published specifications. But the available evidence does not establish that the Pelagos is overlooked by buyers, sells less than comparable watches, holds value poorly, or offers better value than named alternatives.
No independently published sales figure, market-share statistic, resale-performance figure, ownership survey or comparative-value study is established here. “Underrated” is therefore best read as an opinion about the family’s technical proposition, not a fact about the watch market. Likewise, a value verdict would require current transaction prices and independent comparisons, not just TUDOR’s suggested retail prices.

Check the reference before buying or changing straps
Compatibility depends on the exact model. TUDOR lists a 22 mm lug width for standard reference M25600TB-0001, but the FXD’s fixed bars change the attachment method. A strap described simply as “22 mm” is not automatically compatible with every Pelagos. Check the reference, attachment design and included hardware before ordering a replacement.
The listed specifications can help narrow the choice, but they do not establish real-world accuracy, comfort or durability beyond the stated movement certification and construction details. Confirm current availability, configuration and price with TUDOR or a retailer in your market before purchase.
