Introduced in August 1976, Citizen’s Crystron Solar Cell brought rechargeable solar cells to an analog quartz wristwatch, with eight cells visible on its dial.

Citizen introduced the Crystron Solar Cell in August 1976, calling it the world’s first analog quartz wristwatch with rechargeable solar cells. That category matters: an earlier solar watch, the LED-display Synchronar 2100, had already appeared. The Crystron’s milestone was bringing solar charging to an analog quartz wristwatch, with its solar cells plainly visible on the dial.

Was the Citizen Crystron Solar Cell the first solar watch?

Not the first solar watch in every sense. Citizen’s claim is narrower: the Crystron Solar Cell was the world’s first analog quartz wristwatch with rechargeable solar cells. Citizen dates the commercial launch to August 1976 and identifies the featured model as Cal. 8629-7J. Its 2019 heritage release and corporate history support that description.

That qualification distinguishes it from the earlier Synchronar 2100, which Fratello describes as a solar-powered watch with an LED display. The two watches represent different milestones: an earlier solar watch using a digital display, and Citizen’s solar-cell rechargeable analog quartz wristwatch. Calling the Crystron simply “the first solar watch” erases that distinction.

What made the Crystron Solar Cell different?

Solar technology on the dial

Citizen specifies that Cal. 8629-7J used eight monocrystalline silicon solar cells. Rather than hide the light-collecting hardware beneath an ordinary-looking dial, the Crystron made it part of the face. Fratello’s design account describes the panels as a visible grid arranged in sectors around the dial, with the layout interacting with the watch’s indexes. That visual reading is Fratello’s, while the cell count and material come from Citizen’s release.

A prototype before the commercial watch

Citizen says it made a solar-watch prototype in 1974, then refined the concept before commercializing the Crystron in 1976. The prototype date is not the launch date: the commercially introduced watch is the August 1976 milestone recorded in Citizen’s heritage release and corporate chronology. Citizen’s official 1976 product-history entry also lists the Crystron Solar Cell.

A predecessor to Eco-Drive

Citizen presents the Crystron as part of the technical path that later led to its light-powered Eco-Drive technology. Eco-Drive was not the name of the 1976 watch; the Crystron is better understood as a predecessor and foundation in Citizen’s light-powered watch history.

What do the model and price details tell us?

Citizen identifies the heritage watch as Crystron Solar Cell Cal. 8629-7J, records its original Japanese price as ¥45,000, and marks the model as discontinued in its 2019 release. Fratello discusses caliber 8620A in its account of a featured watch. Those caliber references should not be treated as interchangeable without verifying the specific variant and watch back.

Can you still buy a vintage Citizen Crystron Solar Cell?

Collector availability varies; the watch is discontinued, and there is no established current inventory or market price here. Fratello’s January 2022 article noted a condition-dependent range of $200–$800 at that time, but that is a dated editorial observation, not a current valuation. Treat listings individually, checking the exact reference, condition, and whether the watch runs. A vintage example’s charging and service needs are not established by its appearance alone.

What should owners know about servicing?

Fratello’s author reported fitting a Varta V15H rechargeable battery to one watch and getting its movement to start. That is an individual experiment, not Citizen repair guidance or proof of general compatibility. Do not use it as a battery-substitution recommendation; have a qualified watchmaker verify the correct component and assess the watch before servicing.
