The Benrus Sky Chief is a pilot’s chronograph introduced in 1940, but vintage examples do not share one standard movement or configuration. Collectors should assess each older watch on its own evidence; the modern 36 mm automatic reissue is a distinct, clearly specified alternative.
What is the Benrus Sky Chief?
BENRUS dates the Sky Chief’s introduction to 1940 and describes it as a purpose-built pilot’s chronograph for cockpit precision. The brand highlights a domed crystal, slim bezel, tri-compax register arrangement and aeronautical minute graduations on its current Sky Chief product page.
Fratello reports that the watch was officially issued to many commercial pilots from the 1940s through the 1960s. That is a secondary-source historical account, not an independently verified issue record established by airline documentation or a primary Benrus archive in the sources available here. Vintage Sky Chiefs vary by example
There is no single vintage movement specification that safely describes every Sky Chief. The surviving listings below document different examples, not a complete production history or proof that every watch bearing the name is original.

These records are useful starting points for comparison, not substitutes for examining an individual watch. A reference number or movement name in a listing does not by itself verify that the parts now in the watch left the factory together.
How to assess a vintage example
Prioritize condition, originality and credible service documentation over a seller’s rarity claims. Photos can help you identify questions, but they cannot reliably establish originality or reveal the condition of a chronograph movement.

- Ask for clear images and descriptions of the movement, case, dial, hands and pushers. Separate what the seller has directly observed from claims about provenance or factory originality.
- Request any service records and ask what work was performed, and when. If the history is unknown, WatchesRewound recommends service; that is dealer guidance, not evidence of a universal service interval.
- Have a qualified watchmaker familiar with vintage chronographs inspect the watch, including prior repairs and the condition of its movement.
- Confirm that the chronograph starts, stops and resets correctly. A brief demonstration is useful, but does not replace an inspection.
What the current Benrus reissue offers
BENRUS’s modern Sky Chief is a separate, contemporary model inspired by the historical watch—not an exact reproduction established by the available specifications. The manufacturer lists a 36 mm 316L stainless-steel case, 11.9 mm case height, 42.5 mm lug-to-lug length and 18 mm lug width. It has a double-domed box sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and 100 m / 330 ft water resistance.
The reissue uses an ETA 2894 automatic chronograph movement. BENRUS states a 42-hour power reserve and COSC certification. Its current page lists two dial variants:

BENRUS listed the watch at $3,950 when the product information was accessed in 2026; price and availability can change. Check the manufacturer’s product page for the current price, stock and selected reference. The listed 18 mm lug width makes 18 mm straps a sensible starting point, but confirm fit with the watch and strap before buying.
