#TBT: Driving With an Individualistic Seiko Motorist

A rotated dial makes the Seiko Motorist unusual to read at a glance. Tomas Rosputinsky recounts experimenting with its wrist position, restoring his example, and choosing a brown leather strap.

How do you read a watch whose dial is rotated off the usual 12-o’clock orientation while driving? In a May 2, 2024, Fratello Watches feature, Tomas Rosputinsky describes experimenting with the Seiko Motorist’s position on his wrist during a two-hour drive. The account is a personal experience, not a driving-safety test or a technical review.

Why the Seiko Motorist’s dial looks different

Rosputinsky describes the Motorist’s dial as rotated to the right. The design lets him read the time diagonally with a glance, without first turning his wrist into the familiar position used for a conventional dial. A marker below 12 o’clock and crosshair lines help him orient the display.

That layout changes the practical question from simply “Can I see the dial?” to “Where should the watch sit so the rotated display meets my glance?” The feature does not establish a universally correct wrist position; Rosputinsky says he was unsure and tried different placements during his drive.

How Rosputinsky wore it while driving

When the case sat fully at the side of his wrist, Rosputinsky found it uncomfortable. Turning it slightly to the side let the case hug his wrist more comfortably, in his experience. That is one wearer’s account, not evidence that the position will suit every wrist or driving posture.

He usually prefers chronographs for longer trips, but found the Motorist’s unusual dial refreshing. The two-hour drive is an anecdote about his own use, not a performance statistic or a recommendation to read a watch instead of watching the road.

Restoring the watch and choosing a strap

The Motorist arrived with stains on its case and a badly scratched, cracked Plexiglass crystal. Rosputinsky consulted a watchmaker; after cleaning and replacing the crystal, he says the watch’s appearance improved substantially.

He fitted a soft brown leather strap, preferring its color against the watch’s warm gold and yellow tones. As Rosputinsky wrote in the feature, “When my Seiko Motorist arrived, I fitted it with a soft brown leather strap, and it has never left the watch.” The account gives no lug width or strap reference, so it does not identify a specific replacement strap that will fit.

What the feature does—and does not—establish

Rosputinsky characterizes the Seiko Motorist as difficult to find, but the feature provides no current listings, market survey, or verified availability. It also does not establish the watch’s exact reference, movement, production period, or lug width. Those details should not be inferred from the design description or from his individual example.
