The Seiko SKX779 is the first-generation Black Monster, the reference Seiko identifies as the origin of its Monster series. Launched in 2000, it paired a bold diver-focused design with the 7S26 automatic movement. The nickname came from fans, not from a formal Seiko definition.
What is the Seiko SKX779?
The SKX779 is the black-dial, black-bezel first-generation Seiko Monster. Seiko Design calls it “the origin of the series” and dates the first generation’s launch to 2000. The orange-dial counterpart is the SKX781, while later Monster generations brought design and movement changes.
Seiko offered the first generation on either a polyurethane strap, suitable for wearing over a wetsuit, or a metal bracelet. The configuration of an individual vintage watch may differ, so check the actual strap or bracelet rather than assuming it is original.
Why is it called the “Monster”?
“Monster” began as a fan nickname; Seiko’s designers say the name has no clear definition. The design was meant to make the watch easy for divers to use, not to create an unusual-looking watch for its own sake. Seiko designer Hitoshi Ando described the result this way: “The goal was not to create an unusual watch from the beginning, but to create a watch that would be easy for divers to use, which inevitably led to a bold design.”

A tool-watch design with a distinctive silhouette
The design cues serve legibility and handling. The rotating bezel has deep side gouges for grip, while its numerals, the hands and the luminous hour indexes are large and prominent. Seiko’s account describes the indexes as LumiBrite. Together, those elements explain why the SKX779 looks so different from a conventional round-cased diver without requiring the nickname to have an official meaning.

Seiko says the second-generation Monster, launched in 2012, replaced the 7S26 with the 4R36 and changed the dial design. Later-generation Prospex Monsters should therefore not be treated as the same reference as the SKX779. If you are checking instructions for an example, Seiko’s instruction index lists a 7S26 automatic-diver manual; use the caliber code on the case back to choose the relevant instructions.
What to check before buying a vintage SKX779
A reference’s original design and specifications do not tell you the condition of a surviving watch. The available source material does not establish the seals, service history, pressure-test results or diving suitability of any particular example. Treat a listing as a vintage watch that needs individual verification.

- Confirm the identity: compare the dial, bezel and case-back markings with the SKX779 reference and case code, and distinguish it from the orange SKX781 or later Monster references.
- Check originality and configuration: ask whether the dial, hands, bezel, crown, bracelet or strap have been replaced or modified. A watch can retain the reference marking while no longer matching its original configuration.
- Ask for service details: request dated service documentation where available. An assertion that a watch runs does not establish that it has been serviced or is ready for water exposure.
- Inspect the controls: check that the crown operates and the bezel turns as expected, without treating either function as proof of water resistance.
- Require a recent pressure test for water use: have a qualified watchmaker assess the individual watch if water resistance matters. Do not infer present-day diving suitability from the model’s historical design or a general manual rating.
Water resistance: the important vintage-watch caveat
A third-party reproduction of Seiko’s 7S26/7S35/7S36 diver-watch instructions gives general movement-family guidance of 200-meter water resistance and suitability for scuba diving. That is not a condition report or a current test result for an SKX779. Age, seals, prior repairs and damage can affect an individual watch; only an appropriate assessment of that watch can address its present water resistance.
