TCL announced the MOVETIME MT48 on September 10, 2025, as a children’s smartwatch focused on location tracking, parent-to-child communication and digital wellbeing. It combines L1+L5 dual-frequency GPS, 4G video calling, SOS support, safe zones and a School Time Mode. TCL announced a €150 European recommended retail price, with planned availability in Germany, the UK, Spain, Italy and France from late October 2025.
The MT48 is not simply a miniature smartphone. Its usefulness depends on cellular service, the TCL Connect app and parental configuration. Families should confirm the exact regional model, SIM or eSIM type, carrier compatibility and any recurring subscription costs before buying.

What dual-band GPS means on the MT48
The MT48 uses L1+L5 dual-frequency GPS rather than relying on a single GPS frequency. TCL says this can improve positioning precision and resistance to interference near tall buildings, trees and other difficult environments.

That does not establish a guaranteed accuracy figure. TCL has not published an independently measured error range in the available product material. GPS performance can still deteriorate indoors, underground, inside vehicles or among dense high-rise buildings. The watch may also rely on cellular positioning, Wi-Fi positioning, satellite visibility, map data and software when determining or displaying a location.
TCL also advertises location updates that can refresh every second. A one-second refresh claim is not the same as one-second positional accuracy or a guarantee that every update will reach a parent instantly. Weak cellular coverage, server delays, battery-saving behavior and background connectivity can affect safe-zone alerts and live tracking.
Location tracking and emergency features
Through the TCL Connect ecosystem, parents can access real-time location tracking, location history and customizable safe zones. The watch can alert a parent when a child leaves a designated area, while the one-touch SOS function can place an emergency call and share live location.
TCL also lists compatibility with third-party map applications. These features are useful for families who want more than a basic tracker, but they require a charged watch, working mobile service and a configured parent account. The MT48 should not be treated as a replacement for emergency services or direct supervision, particularly when the watch is offline or outside cellular and satellite coverage.

4G video calling and messaging
The MT48 supports 4G video calls, VoLTE voice calls, voice messages, SMS and emoji messages. It can also share photos and participate in group chats. Parents can approve contacts and control who is added as a friend, helping keep communication within a known circle.
These features require compatible mobile connectivity and parental setup. TCL’s announcement does not provide a complete list of LTE bands or carriers, and it does not establish whether video calls can be made to any ordinary phone or must use the TCL Connect system. It also does not provide a full breakdown of data, messaging or cloud-service charges.
Buyers should therefore confirm the exact watch variant and local network requirements before purchase. TCL’s UK page specifically says that eSIM and Nano SIM are separate products; a generic MT48 listing should not be assumed to support both.
School Time Mode and child-focused tools
Parents activate School Time Mode through the TCL Connect app. According to TCL, the mode silences notifications, disables the camera, turns off games and disables group chats while keeping SOS calls active.

This offers a practical way to reduce classroom distractions, but the available product information does not explain whether schools can define their own schedules, whether children can bypass the mode, whether location tracking continues, or how ordinary calls are handled. Families should check those details against the app and local school policy.
Other advertised features include step tracking, reminders, alarms, custom and interactive watch faces, motion-sensing functions and parent approval for friend additions. TCL also promotes a kids-safe AI image-creation feature. Its UK product disclaimer says access to the AI image-recognition function requires a subscription, so parents should distinguish between hardware capability and included service access.
Battery life and durability
The watch has a 900mAh battery. TCL advertises up to 2.5 days of use and up to seven days of standby, but says these figures come from internal laboratory tests and vary with usage.
Frequent video calls, high-frequency location updates, location history, weak cellular signal, screen brightness and other active features can reduce runtime. For a safety device, charging discipline matters: a watch that is left uncharged cannot provide tracking or SOS connectivity.

TCL lists both IP68 and 2ATM protection, but these ratings should not be treated as interchangeable. IP68 generally covers dust resistance and water protection under defined test conditions. 2ATM is a low water-pressure rating intended for everyday exposure rather than unrestricted swimming or diving.
TCL’s UK material describes the watch as suitable for splashes, rain and handwashing, while its 2ATM disclaimer focuses on everyday water exposure. Water resistance can also decline after impacts, seal damage or improper repairs. Parents should not assume that every swimming environment is covered by the rating.

TCL says its watch and communication system are backed by GDPR compliance, ISO 27701 privacy certification and ISO 27001 security certification. Those claims are relevant, but they do not eliminate privacy risk or describe every data flow.
The watch can involve location history, photos, voice messages, contacts and child-account information. Before setup, parents should read the applicable privacy and data-retention policies and check how to delete location history, remove devices, close an account and manage child data. It is also sensible to look for strong passwords, multifactor authentication, login alerts and device-revocation controls.

TCL announced the MOVETIME MT48 on September 10, 2025, with planned late-October availability in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France at a €150 recommended retail price. TCL said expansion to other markets would depend on local certification.
The announcement does not confirm US availability, US pricing or US carrier support. Retailer listings and prices can also vary by country, model and sales channel. A Spanish retailer listing, for example, should not be taken as evidence that the same hardware or service arrangement is available elsewhere.

What to check before buying
- Regional model: Confirm that the MT48 is officially sold in your country.
- SIM type: Verify whether the listing is for the Nano SIM or eSIM version.
- LTE compatibility: Check supported bands and carriers with the retailer or TCL.
- Recurring costs: Ask whether a monthly cellular plan is mandatory and whether app or AI features are subscription-based.
- Parent phone support: Confirm that TCL Connect works with the parent’s iPhone or Android device.
- Privacy controls: Check data retention, account deletion, location-history deletion and device-revocation options.
- School rules: Confirm that connected cameras, messaging and wearables are allowed.

Who is the TCL MOVETIME MT48 for?
The MT48 could suit families who want location tracking, calling and messaging without giving a younger child an unrestricted smartphone. Its combination of safe zones, SOS, video calling and school controls is more comprehensive than a location-only tracker.

It is a weaker fit for buyers seeking a device with no monthly service costs, families outside the announced European markets, or parents who require independently verified GPS accuracy. It may also be unsuitable where schools prohibit connected cameras or cellular wearables.
Most importantly, the MT48 is a connected service rather than just a watch. Its value depends on local network support, an active plan, the TCL Connect app, regular charging and sensible privacy settings. Those details should be confirmed before the €150 hardware purchase.
