Temple is a forthcoming head-worn wearable associated with Deepinder Goyal. It sits at the side of the head near the temple rather than on the wrist, and it uses a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor to produce a company-defined metric called BrainFlow. It is not an EEG device, and nothing reported so far shows that its measurements have been independently validated. The two studies behind the claims are preprints that have not been peer-reviewed. Its roughly ₹1 lakh price is indicative, and preorders were expected but not confirmed as open.
How Temple differs from a smartwatch
Temple and a smartwatch share the same basic optical method. PPG shines light into tissue and reads changes in blood volume. The differences lie in where the sensor sits and what the output is meant to represent. A smartwatch reads at the wrist and reports metrics such as heart rate. Temple reads at the side of the head and is built around BrainFlow, a measure the company associates with changes in cerebral blood flow.
| Feature | Temple (as described in launch reporting) | Typical smartwatch | EEG headset |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensor location | Side of the head, near the temple | Wrist | Scalp |
| Signal type | PPG (optical, blood volume changes) | PPG (optical, blood volume changes) | Electrical activity of the brain |
| Headline output | BrainFlow, a company-described measure linked to cerebral blood flow changes | Heart rate and wellness metrics | Brain electrical activity |
| Validation status | Two preprints reported by Mint (October 8, 2026), not peer-reviewed | Varies by product and feature | Varies by product and feature |
The practical consequence is that Temple should not be described as measuring electrical brain activity, and it should not be treated as a substitute for a wrist device’s heart-rate tracking without evidence that the two signals agree in daily use.
How does Temple stay attached?
Temple is held in place by single-use adhesive Grips rather than a strap. Mint reports that it is designed to stay on during running, swimming and showering. Financial Express reports that the Grips supply is included with purchase and that the company describes the adhesive as medical-grade. The medical-grade description is the company’s own claim, and no independent testing of the adhesive is reported.

The wear guidance reported by Mint (October 8, 2026) and Financial Express (October 5, 2026) works like this:
- A Grip can last up to seven days, according to company guidance.
- The company recommends replacing it every two to three days.
- Replace it sooner after heavy sweat or dust exposure.
- Ongoing replacement cost is not stated in the reporting, so the running cost of wearing Temple is unknown.
- Skin tolerance over repeated Grip changes is not addressed in the reporting.
What BrainFlow is, and what it is not
BrainFlow is the company’s name for a PPG-derived metric that it says tracks changes associated with cerebral blood flow. Two boundaries matter. First, the sensor reads optical signals from tissue at one spot on the head. It does not read the brain’s electrical activity. Second, BrainFlow is a company description, not a clinically cleared measurement. Temple is not described as able to diagnose medical conditions, and no clinical outcome statistic for it has been reported.

What the two reported studies show
Mint, reporting on October 8, 2026, describes two studies shared by Goyal. Both are preprints. Neither has been peer-reviewed, and Mint says independent validation is still necessary. The studies are small, and both enrolled healthy participants, so their results cannot be extended to patients or to other populations without further testing.
| Study | Participants | Comparison method | Reported result | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First study | 23 healthy adults | Transcranial Doppler, during pedalling and posture changes | No single correlation figure stated in the Mint account | Preprint, not peer-reviewed |
| Second study | 44 healthy men, 60 sessions | Changes in brain blood volume measured with time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy | Correlations up to 0.91 | Preprint, not peer-reviewed |
Study one: 23 healthy adults
The first study compared BrainFlow readings with Transcranial Doppler measurements while participants pedalled and changed posture. That design tests whether the readings move with changes in cerebral blood flow during activity. The reporting does not give a single agreement figure for this study.

Study two: 44 men across 60 sessions
The second study reports correlations of up to 0.91 against changes in brain blood volume measured with time-domain near-infrared spectroscopy. A correlation in this range means the two measurements tended to move together in that sample. It is not proof of clinical accuracy, and it is not independent confirmation of the company’s claims.
Can a single wearable device measure blood flow across the entire brain?
An Indian Express report dated January 6, 2026, paraphrases neurologist Dr Praveen Gupta as saying that a device attached at one external point cannot reliably represent blood flow across both sides of the brain, or across deeper and smaller arteries. The report gives this as a paraphrase, not a direct quotation. It is a critique of the measurement design. It is not a finding about Temple’s studies, and it has not been tested against them.

Who is Temple for, and what does Goyal say about age?
Moneycontrol, reporting on October 8, 2026, quotes Goyal from an October 3, 2026 user exchange:
“We use a PPG sensor. Same as Apple Watch, and other wearables. Nothing in there which can hurt a developing brain. Having said that, I don’t see why anybody less than 18 years would need a Temple, unless they are aiming to go to the olympics.”

This is Goyal’s own statement. It is not an independent pediatric safety assessment, and the reporting does not describe an official age limit in product documentation. Parents and buyers under 18 should treat it as the founder’s opinion on need, not a safety approval.
The pilot-fitness idea is speculation
Goyal has floated pilots, and possible Indian Air Force use, as a future application. Mint reports that Temple is not approved, established or certified as a pilot-fitness or aviation safety device, and that there is no evidence it can determine whether a commercial pilot is fit to fly. Read this as an idea about a possible use, not as a current capability.

What to confirm before treating Temple as a purchase
- The final India price, and whether the Grips are an ongoing cost.
- Whether the two preprints have been peer-reviewed or independently replicated.
- Whether official product documentation confirms the colour names and the age guidance.
- When preorders open, and what they cover.
- Whether the company offers any regulatory clearance for a health claim.
The Bottom Line
Temple is best read as an unproven, head-worn optical sensor with a company-defined metric, not a smartwatch replacement or a diagnostic tool. It may be worth watching if you are interested in cerebral blood flow tracking and can accept a consumable adhesive routine and an unconfirmed price. If you need validated health data or a device that fits daily wrist use, it is not the right choice yet.
