The Garmin vívoactive 6 is a strong all-around cross-platform fitness watch; the Apple Watch Series 11 suits iPhone users, the Garmin Forerunner 570 suits serious runners, and the Oura Ring 5 suits people prioritizing sleep and recovery.

What counts as a fitness tracker?

“Fitness tracker” covers several kinds of wearable. A basic band tracks steps, heart rate, sleep, and workouts; a fitness watch adds a larger display, GPS, and training tools; and a smartwatch combines fitness features with apps, calls, payments, and notifications. Screenless trackers record data in the background and rely on a phone app, while smart rings focus on sleep and recovery without a display or onboard GPS.

These products are not interchangeable. A screenless band may be discreet and last longer between charges, while a running watch can show live workout data and record routes without a phone.

How to choose a fitness tracker

  1. Check phone compatibility. Apple Watch Series 11 requires an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later. Fitbit Charge 6 supports iOS 16.4 or later and Android 11 or later; Galaxy Watch8 requires Android 12 or later. Check the manufacturer’s current requirements for other models.
  2. Decide whether you need built-in GPS. Built-in GPS records a route without your phone. Connected GPS relies on the phone, Bluetooth, location permission, and usually the companion app.
  3. Choose the form factor you will wear. Consider wrist comfort, overnight wear, screen preference, and whether a ring could interfere with gripping exercises.
  4. Compare ongoing costs. WHOOP membership is central to its experience, and Oura membership is needed for detailed data and guidance. Google Health Premium is optional for Fitbit devices; core Garmin Connect features do not require a subscription.
  5. Match features to your activity. Runners may value GPS and training plans; someone focused on sleep may prefer a ring or screenless tracker. For strength training, consider wrist mobility, a readable display, and whether the device could be struck by weights.

  • Fitbit devices and Google Fitbit Air: core tracking is available in Google Health; Google Health Premium adds advanced coaching and some deeper insights.
  • Garmin: core Garmin Connect features do not require a subscription; Connect+ is optional on supported devices.
  • Apple, Samsung, Amazfit, Suunto, and Polar: generally do not require a recurring tracker membership, though cellular plans, music services, and third-party apps may cost extra.

Fitbit became part of the Google Health app on May 19, 2026, and Fitbit Premium was renamed Google Health Premium. Google Account and internet-connected phone requirements apply.

Which tracker is best for sleep?

Choose a device you can wear consistently. Rings and screenless trackers may be easier to keep on overnight, while watches offer broader workout features. Sleep duration, bedtime consistency, resting heart rate, and multi-night trends can help you notice patterns, but sleep stages and wake detection are algorithmic estimates, not laboratory measurements. Meta-analyses comparing consumer wearables with polysomnography report limitations, especially for sleep staging and wake detection: see the sleep-stage validation meta-analysis and wrist-wearable sleep meta-analysis.

A tracker cannot diagnose a sleep disorder. Discuss snoring, breathing pauses, waking gasping, or persistent exhaustion with a qualified clinician.

Which tracker is best for strength training?

For lifting, kettlebells, pull-ups, and high-intensity circuits, comfort and durability may matter more than a long feature list. A slim band can interfere less with wrist movement than a large watch. Remove rings during heavy gripping or contact with a bar, and protect devices that could hit equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider display readability, workout detection, rest timers, set-counting, and chest-strap support. Automatic rep counting and wrist-based heart rate can vary with grip, wrist flexion, sweat, movement, and exercise type. Treat tracker readings as useful context rather than a replacement for a deliberate training log.

Which tracker is best for women?

“Best for women” should mean useful fit and features, not that all women need the same device. Compare smaller case options, band adjustment, overnight comfort, skin irritation, cycle and temperature features, and privacy controls.

Cycle and temperature features can help organize personal trends, but they do not establish fertility, pregnancy, contraception status, illness, or another medical condition. Garmin says relevant wellness features are not intended for contraception or diagnosis. Availability can vary by country, age, language, regulatory status, and phone platform.

How accurate are fitness trackers?

Accuracy depends on the metric, activity, fit, and person wearing the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Heart rate: often useful for resting trends and steady exercise, but movement, fit, physiology, and activity type can cause errors.
  • Steps: useful for trends, but arm movement, carrying objects, pushing a stroller, or mobility aids can distort counts.
  • GPS: usually most useful outdoors with a clear sky; buildings, trees, tunnels, route shape, and recording settings matter.
  • Calories: estimates rather than direct measurements. A recent Apple Watch accuracy meta-analysis illustrates why calorie figures should not be treated as laboratory results.
  • Sleep stages: algorithmic estimates, not polysomnography.
  • SpO₂, ECG, AFib, blood pressure, and sleep-apnea features: availability and regulatory status vary by device and country.

The wearable-accuracy umbrella review underscores that accuracy is not a single number. Evaluate the metric you need under the activity you do. The FDA’s general-wellness policy distinguishes low-risk wellness products from devices making medical claims. Do not use a tracker to diagnose, treat, or rule out a medical condition.

Common buying mistakes

  • Buying by sale price: a temporary discount is not a permanent budget category.
  • Ignoring compatibility: Apple Watch requires a compatible iPhone; Galaxy Watch8 requires Android and may restrict some features on non-Samsung phones.
  • Assuming “waterproof” means anything goes: follow the exact model’s water-resistance rating and restrictions. Charge 6’s 5ATM rating is intended for shallow water, not high-velocity or high-temperature water.
  • Choosing a ring without sizing: Oura recommends wearing its sizing ring for 24 hours, including sleep, before ordering.
  • Expecting a screenless tracker to replace a watch: it cannot show live workout data without a display, and location features may require a phone.
  • Paying for data you will not use: check what remains free after a trial and the renewal price.
  • Over-trusting health alerts: an alert is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis.

FAQ

Can I swim with a fitness tracker?

Only within the manufacturer’s stated water-resistance limits. A 5ATM rating does not guarantee safety in hot tubs, saunas, high-pressure water, or every watersport. Follow the exact model’s restrictions.

Do I need my phone for a fitness tracker?

Not always. Built-in-GPS watches can record routes without a phone, though syncing and some features may still need one. Screenless and connected-GPS trackers depend more heavily on a phone for location-based workouts and detailed review.

Can a fitness tracker measure calories accurately?

No consumer wrist wearable directly measures daily calorie burn. Calorie figures are estimates based on sensors and personal data; use them as rough context, not a precise number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are fitness trackers useful for seniors?

They can help with reminders, activity trends, and certain heart-rate, fall-detection, or emergency features where available. Choose a clear display, simple controls, comfortable band, manageable charging routine, and a phone ecosystem the user or caregiver can support. Check regional availability and do not substitute a tracker for medical monitoring.

Can a fitness tracker replace a medical device?

No. Consumer wearables support general wellness and may offer specific regulated features in some markets, but they do not diagnose or rule out illness. Discuss concerning readings or symptoms with a clinician.

What is the cheapest tracker to own over time?

Devices without a required membership can cost less over several years. Garmin, Apple, Samsung, Amazfit, Suunto, and Polar generally avoid mandatory tracker subscriptions. Fitbit has optional premium features, while WHOOP and Oura require closer scrutiny because membership is central to their experience.
