Why the GPHG awarded 17 prizes but had 16 winning watches

The official 2018 announcement lists 17 prizes overall. Sixteen went to watches across the categories above; the additional Special Jury Prize went to Jean-Claude Biver. Biver was not a seventeenth watch winner.

How to interpret the 2018 categories

The categories recognized different kinds of watches and watchmaking, including complications, chronometry, sports, jewellery, artistic crafts, revival, and price-banded awards. A win in one category should not be treated as a universal ranking against winners in other categories.

For example, the Aiguille d’Or went to the Bovet Récital 22 Grand Récital, while the Challenge award went to the Nomos Tangente neomatik 41 Update within a category described for that year as under CHF 4,000. Those awards reflect different competition contexts, not a head-to-head test.
