Omega identified the finished movement as caliber 867, based on caliber 861. The non-diamond edition is reported as 50 pieces; diamond-set watches were a separate variant.
What makes this Speedmaster unusual?
Made for the 25th anniversary of the Apollo XI lunar landing, the watch pairs a platinum Speedmaster Professional case with an extensively opened and decorated mechanical chronograph movement. The caseband is reported to carry the engraving “1969 – 1994 Apollo XI.”

The anniversary refers to the mission, not to this particular watch having flown in space. Christie’s notes that Neil Armstrong wore a Speedmaster during the first lunar walk; the 1994 model is a later commemorative edition.
How many were made, and what versions exist?
Christie’s describes the non-diamond platinum skeleton model as a limited edition of 50 pieces, and Fratello likewise reports 50 platinum examples for this configuration. The count should not be combined with the separately reported diamond-set watches.

| Version | Reported configuration | Reported reference |
|---|---|---|
| Non-diamond skeleton | Leather strap | 3097.30 (Fratello) |
| Non-diamond skeleton | Platinum bracelet | 3096.30 (Fratello) |
| Baguette-diamond skeleton | Bracelet and strap configurations; 10 pieces reported in total | Reference not stated in Fratello’s cited account |
Reference formats differ between sources and catalogues: Christie’s uses 145.0063, while Phillips describes a related platinum skeletonized watch as AT 345.0063. These differences are not enough to establish that every catalogue entry represents the same configuration. For an individual watch, compare the case details and movement with its papers rather than relying on a reference string alone.
What did Armin Strom do to the movement?
Armin Strom worked on Omega caliber 861, cutting away material to expose the mechanism and then engraving and decorating the remaining components. Fratello reports that Omega called the resulting rhodium-plated movement caliber 867. The openworked dial and sapphire display back show the movement from both sides, making the finishing part of the watch’s visual design rather than merely exposing the mechanism.

What to check when identifying an example
- Configuration: Establish whether the watch is the non-diamond version or a baguette-diamond variant, and whether it has a strap or platinum bracelet.
- Documentation: Check that the papers, case details, and movement information agree. Auction catalogues use differing reference-number formats, so a number alone is not conclusive.
- Completeness and condition: Box, papers, provenance, and condition vary by individual example. Have originality and condition assessed by a qualified watch specialist rather than generalizing from another listing.
Christie’s says the watch is extensively described and illustrated in Marco Richon’s Omega — A Journey Through Time. Its catalogue and entries from Phillips also document examples; Fratello named Davidoff Brothers as a seller when its article appeared. Those historical mentions do not establish current availability or value.
