The 3 Best Fitness Trackers That Aren’t Smartwatches for 2023

For 2023, the Fitbit Charge 5 was the best overall fitness band, the Inspire 3 suited beginners, and the Amazfit Band 7 delivered the most budget features. Here’s how GPS, battery life, subscriptions, and support changed the choice.

Historical buying note: This ranking reflects the fitness-tracker market in 2023, when the original recommendations were published on May 28, 2023. Availability, software support, subscription pricing, and better alternatives may have changed since then. For a 2023-specific comparison, the Fitbit Charge 5 was the best overall choice, the Fitbit Inspire 3 was the best affordable Fitbit, and the Amazfit Band 7 offered the most features for the least money.

None is a full replacement for a smartwatch or serious GPS sports watch. The most important dividing line is GPS: the Charge 5 has built-in GPS, while the Inspire 3 and Amazfit Band 7 depend on a paired phone for route tracking.

Quick verdict

  • Best overall: Fitbit Charge 5 — the most complete 2023 band, with onboard GPS, a color AMOLED screen, broad health tracking, and NFC payments.
  • Best affordable Fitbit: Fitbit Inspire 3 — the smallest and simplest option for steps, sleep, heart rate, and general wellness.
  • Best budget value: Amazfit Band 7 — a long battery claim and broad feature list at a low 2023 price.
  • Best for serious training: None of these — choose a dedicated GPS sports watch if you need structured workouts, navigation, music, or phone-free exercise.

What counts as a fitness tracker?

“Fitness tracker” is a practical category, not a strict technical standard. These devices usually use a narrow band rather than a traditional watch case and focus on steps, heart rate, sleep, workouts, and wellness. They may show the time, mirror notifications, support payments, or include a touchscreen, but they generally lack a smartwatch app store, phone-independent communications, music playback, maps, and extensive on-device interaction.

That makes a tracker a good fit if you want passive monitoring, a discreet sleep companion, fewer distractions, multi-day battery life, and a lower price. A smartwatch is usually better for calls, messages, maps, music, apps, richer workout displays, or exercising without your phone.

Comparison: the three 2023 picks

Feature Fitbit Charge 5 Fitbit Inspire 3 Amazfit Band 7
2023 role Best overall Best affordable Fitbit Best budget value
GPS Built-in GPS and GLONASS Connected GPS through a phone Phone-dependent for GPS
Display Color AMOLED Color display Color display
Battery Up to seven days, manufacturer claim About eight days in source coverage About two weeks in source coverage
Health tracking Heart rate, blood-oxygen-related data, sleep, ECG/EDA-related features Heart rate, blood-oxygen-related data, sleep, skin-temperature-related data Heart rate, blood-oxygen-related data, sleep, stress, and menstrual-cycle features
Subscription Basic use without Premium; some advanced analysis requires Fitbit Premium Basic use without Premium; some advanced content requires Fitbit Premium No Fitbit subscription
Best for Runners, cyclists, and Fitbit buyers wanting more sensors Beginners and small wrists Strict budgets and long battery life
Main weakness Older hardware and a Premium paywall No onboard GPS Less established ecosystem and support uncertainty

Battery figures are not directly comparable. They can change substantially with GPS use, screen brightness, notifications, sleep blood-oxygen monitoring, workout frequency, and battery age. The Charge 5’s “up to seven days” figure is a manufacturer estimate; the Inspire 3 and Band 7 figures reflect the historical source coverage and should not be treated as universal results.

1. Fitbit Charge 5: best overall

The Charge 5 was the strongest all-round tracker in 2023 because it combined the convenience of a band with several features normally associated with more watch-like devices. Its built-in GPS means you can record an outdoor walk, run, or ride without carrying your phone, and its color AMOLED display is easier to read and more attractive than the monochrome screens common on simpler trackers.

The hardware includes continuous heart-rate tracking, blood-oxygen-related measurements, sleep tracking, NFC payment support, and ECG- and EDA-related features. The Charge 5 manual documents its built-in GPS receiver and GLONASS support. GPS performance can still be affected by tall buildings, dense forest, steep hills, and other reception problems.

It is also the best choice of these three for anyone who occasionally exercises without a phone. That does not make it a serious training watch: it lacks the depth, navigation, structured workout tools, and phone-free features that dedicated sports watches provide.

The subscription trade-off

The Charge 5 works without Fitbit Premium, but some of its most useful interpretation and coaching features may be subscription-gated. Depending on the feature and period, Fitbit Premium can include more advanced readiness, sleep, stress, and coaching content. The important distinction is that the tracker does not stop recording basic data when Premium is canceled; rather, some analysis and guided content becomes unavailable.

A historical comparison listed Fitbit Premium at $9.99 per month after an included period. That was a 2022-era price and should not be assumed to be the current 2026 price. Treat any trial, renewal price, or included content as time- and region-dependent.

Buy it if: you want onboard GPS, a bright display, broad health features, and the Fitbit app ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you want the newest hardware, guaranteed long-term support, or advanced insights without recurring costs. Because it was already older hardware by late 2023, a current buyer should confirm official availability, warranty, battery condition, and app support rather than buying a marketplace listing blindly.

2. Fitbit Inspire 3: best affordable Fitbit

The Inspire 3 is the easiest recommendation for a beginner who wants a small, uncomplicated band. It covers the essentials: steps, heart rate, automatic exercise detection, sleep tracking, blood-oxygen-related data, skin-temperature-related information, and menstrual-health tracking. Its slim form is particularly suitable for small wrists or anyone who finds larger wearables uncomfortable in bed.

Its key limitation is GPS. The Inspire 3 does not contain a built-in GPS receiver, so route maps and outdoor distance tracking use the GPS in a paired phone. That is fine for users who already carry a phone on walks and runs, but it is a poor fit for anyone who regularly trains phone-free.

The historical coverage gave it an approximately eight-day battery claim, although settings and usage can shorten that considerably. Sleep monitoring, frequent workouts, high screen brightness, and notifications all increase charging demand.

Like the Charge 5, the Inspire 3 offers a basic Fitbit experience without Premium while placing some advanced insights and coaching behind the optional service. This makes it inexpensive to start, but the total cost can change if you want detailed sleep or readiness analysis over several years.

3. Amazfit Band 7: best budget value

The Amazfit Band 7 was the value pick in 2023, selling for approximately $50 in the source coverage. Its appeal was simple: a large feature list, a long claimed battery life, and a low upfront cost. It offers heart-rate and blood-oxygen-related tracking, stress and menstrual-cycle features, sleep-stage tracking, and a wide selection of sports modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The historical coverage characterized battery life at roughly two weeks in typical use. That is a publication-reported characterization, not a guarantee. GPS should be treated as phone-dependent unless the official specification for your region says otherwise, so runners and cyclists must plan to carry a phone.

“120 sports modes” sounds impressive, but a mode count does not mean 120 deeply differentiated training profiles or equivalent measurement quality. It is primarily a software breadth advantage. The more important questions are whether the mode records the metrics you need, whether the app presents them clearly, and whether the company will continue supporting the product and its companion services.

The Band 7’s compromises are its less mature ecosystem and greater uncertainty around long-term support, data quality, privacy, warranty service, and app continuity compared with larger established platforms. It can be excellent value for casual wellness tracking, but a low price should not be mistaken for Fitbit- or Garmin-level support or medical validation.

Skip it if: you prioritize established support, clinically oriented health features, a long predictable software lifecycle, or phone-free GPS. Confirm stock, warranty coverage, and app support on the official Amazfit Band 7 page before purchasing an older unit.

Built-in GPS is the biggest practical divider

Built-in GPS lets the Charge 5 record a route independently. Connected GPS on the Inspire 3 and Band 7 uses the phone’s receiver through a Bluetooth connection. This saves hardware cost and often battery, but requires carrying the phone and granting the app the necessary location and background permissions.

Connected GPS can fail when Bluetooth disconnects, the phone restricts background activity, or the companion app loses permission to use location. Built-in GPS is more independent, but it also consumes more battery and is not immune to poor reception. Tall buildings, trees, steep terrain, and weather-related conditions can interfere with satellite reception.

How to choose

  1. If you run or cycle without your phone: choose the Charge 5 among these three. If you need training plans, interval tools, navigation, music, or dependable long-term sports analysis, buy a dedicated GPS sports watch instead.
  2. If you mainly want steps and sleep: choose the Inspire 3 for the smallest, simplest Fitbit experience.
  3. If battery life and price matter most: choose the Amazfit Band 7, accepting its ecosystem and support compromises.
  4. If you refuse subscriptions: remember that Fitbit’s basic tracking still works without Premium, but some advanced analysis is paywalled. Garmin’s vívosmart 5 is a useful alternative because Garmin advertises core tracking without a subscription, though it also lacks onboard GPS and uses a monochrome display.
  5. If you want a phone replacement: none of these bands is the right category. Look at a smartwatch or GPS sports watch.

Alternatives to consider

The Garmin vívosmart 5 is the clearest alternative for buyers who prefer Garmin’s data ecosystem and do not want a subscription for core tracking. Garmin advertised up to seven days of battery life and a $149.99 suggested price at launch, but it uses connected GPS and has a monochrome screen.

A current Fitbit tracker may be a more sensible 2026 purchase than an older Charge 5 if official support and replacement parts matter. That does not change the historical 2023 ranking. Screenless recovery wearables and smart rings can suit people focused on sleep and recovery, but they often have different feature sets and subscription economics. A dedicated GPS sports watch costs more and looks more like a watch, but is the better tool for structured training, maps, and phone-free exercise.

Accuracy, health data, and safety

Consumer wearables provide estimates, not laboratory measurements. Step counts can vary when you push a stroller or shopping cart; wrist heart-rate readings can struggle during intervals or strength training; GPS distance changes with terrain and reception; and sleep stages, calorie totals, stress scores, readiness scores, and blood-oxygen estimates should not be treated as clinical results.

ECG or irregular-rhythm features, where available and supported in your region, may screen for possible signs of a rhythm problem. They do not diagnose atrial fibrillation or other heart conditions. These products are not medical devices intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition. Health metrics from consumer wearables are estimates and are not a substitute for medical diagnosis. Seek professional care for symptoms or concerning readings.

Before buying, also check phone compatibility and minimum operating-system requirements for your country, since app requirements can change after the hardware launches. Consider the complete ownership picture: device price, optional subscription, replacement bands, charger availability, warranty, data export, cloud account, privacy policy, and the likelihood that the companion app will remain supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do fitness trackers work without a phone?

They can record many steps, heart-rate, and sleep measurements without the phone nearby, but phone-dependent models need a paired phone for GPS routes and usually for syncing and detailed review. Of these three, only the Charge 5 has built-in GPS.

Can a fitness tracker detect heart problems?

Some models can screen for possible irregular rhythms or record an ECG in supported regions, but wearable readings do not diagnose heart disease. Concerning symptoms or readings require medical evaluation.

Are sleep stages and calorie estimates accurate?

They are estimates and can vary with fit, movement, physiology, and algorithm limitations. Use them for trends rather than as medical or nutritional measurements.

Is an older 2023 tracker still worth buying?

Only after checking official or seller warranty, battery condition, replacement accessories, app support, and return rights. A newer supported model may be a better long-term purchase even if the older device was a strong 2023 pick.
