Choosing a heart-rate monitor starts with how you want to wear it: a chest strap such as the Polar H10 measures electrical heart-rate signals, while an optical armband such as Polar Verity Sense measures from the arm. Before buying, check that the monitor works with your specific watch, phone, or app, and that it will stay securely in contact with your body during your workouts.
This guide’s underlying comparison was published in December 2024 and reported more than 187 hours of consumer testing; it is not a fresh 2026 side-by-side test. The research available for this update verifies product details for the Polar H10 and offers separate, later comparison context from Men’s Health, but does not consistently substantiate the original guide’s full six-product ranking. Treat the historical picks accordingly, and check current availability and compatibility before buying.
What to compare before buying
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Sensing method and position | Chest straps such as Polar H10 use electrical measurement. Optical armbands such as Polar Verity Sense are worn on the upper arm or forearm. |
| Fit and comfort | The sensor needs secure contact with the body. Consider whether a chest strap or arm-worn sensor suits your activities and wearing preference. |
| Compatibility | Confirm support for your exact watch, phone, or workout app, including Bluetooth or ANT+ support and any pairing limits. |
| Battery and memory | Check battery type and expected use, and whether the monitor can record a workout without a connected device. |
| Activity and ecosystem | Consider how you train and whether the monitor’s features work with your existing equipment and apps. |
Product examples supported by the research
Polar H10 — chest-strap example
The Polar H10 is a chest strap that uses electrical heart-rate measurement. Polar lists Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity, a coin-cell battery with up to 400 hours of use, water resistance up to 30 m, and memory for one session of up to 30 hours. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results.
Polar’s stated memory capacity is useful if you want to record a session without keeping a phone nearby. Do not assume that a watch will receive heart-rate data live while the strap and watch are underwater; water can prevent transmission. Check the exact pairing instructions for your device.

Polar Verity Sense — optical armband example
Polar describes Verity Sense as an optical heart-rate sensor worn on the upper arm or forearm. An armband offers a different wearing position from a chest strap, which may better suit some readers’ preferences. The research available for this update does not establish that either form is universally more accurate or comfortable.
Garmin HRM 600 — current comparison context
Men’s Health named Garmin HRM 600 its best chest strap in a separate guide published in April 2026, describing Bluetooth and ANT+ support. That is another publisher’s recommendation, not a result from this article’s December 2024 test. Check Garmin’s current specifications and compatibility with your setup before purchase.

How to choose and set up a monitor
- Choose the wear position. Decide whether you prefer a chest strap’s electrical sensing or an optical sensor worn on the arm.
- Check compatibility. Verify the exact monitor works with your watch, phone, app, or exercise equipment, including its connection standards and pairing limits.
- Secure the sensor. Follow the manufacturer’s fit instructions and keep the sensor firmly against your body for proper readings.
- Review battery and recording needs. Check the manufacturer’s battery information and whether onboard workout memory is available if you train without a connected device.
- Understand transmission limits. Recorded workout data is not the same as live transmission. In particular, do not assume a submerged watch will receive live heart-rate data underwater.
What the testing can and cannot tell you
The exact-title guide reports that its comparison was published in December 2024, included more than 187 hours of testing, and used manual pulse checks and exercise comparisons. That is historical consumer product testing, not clinical validation or an independently verified accuracy ranking.
Men’s Health separately says its editors tested trackers for at least two weeks across varied activities. This provides context about another publisher’s methodology; it should not be attributed to this guide’s test. No independent comparative accuracy figure for the products discussed here was established in the research.

FAQ
Which heart-rate monitor is most accurate?
The available research does not establish a comparative accuracy winner. Fit and secure contact matter, and the choice between a chest strap and optical armband also depends on wearing preference and activity. Consumer fitness monitors are not clinical diagnostic devices.
Are chest-strap heart-rate monitors more accurate than watches?
The research supports a difference in sensing method—Polar H10 uses electrical measurement, while Polar Verity Sense uses optical sensing—but does not provide an independent head-to-head accuracy result. Compare the devices you are considering and make sure each is fitted and used as instructed.
Rank #4
- Sends accurate real-time heart rate and HRV data to compatible Garmin smartwatches and cycling computers, fitness equipment, and apps
- Comfortable machine-washable strap is available in two sizes (XS–S and M–XL) for the most ideal fit for your body type
- Understand how much you slow down when your foot hits the ground with step speed loss, and improve your running form with additional running dynamics, including stride length, vertical oscillation and ground contact time balance (requires compatible smartwatch)
- During activities where you can’t wear a watch, such as team sports, HRM 600 will record the workout and sync data, including heart rate, calories, speed, distance and more, directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
- Tracks daily metrics, including estimated steps, heart rate, calories burned and more, and syncs that data directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
Can I use a heart-rate monitor with a smartwatch?
Often, if the monitor and watch support a compatible connection. Polar lists Bluetooth and ANT+ for H10. Verify the exact watch model, supported connection standards, and pairing limits before buying.
Can I swim with a heart-rate monitor?
Check the specific monitor’s water-resistance rating and intended use. Water can prevent live transmission between a strap and a submerged watch, so do not assume recorded heart-rate data will appear live during a swim.

Choose a heart-rate monitor by wear position, fit, compatibility, and how you train—not by an unverified universal accuracy ranking. Polar H10 is a researched chest-strap example with manufacturer-listed Bluetooth, ANT+, and onboard session memory; Polar Verity Sense is an optical arm-worn alternative. The original six-product rankings reflect testing published in December 2024, and current models, prices, availability, and compatibility should be checked before purchase.
