The ABCs of Time: How Repeater and Alarm Watches Make Their Sounds

A repeater chimes the time when asked; an alarm sounds at a preset moment. Here’s how each mechanism works and how watch chimes evolved from bells to gong springs.

A repeater lets you request the time and hear it chimed; an alarm watch sounds when a time you set arrives. Both make mechanical watches audible, but they answer different questions: a repeater says “what time is it now?” while an alarm says “is it time yet?”

How do repeater watches make their sounds?

Activate a repeater—typically with a slide, pusher, or bolt—and its striking mechanism turns the watch’s current time into a sequence of sounds. In a traditional minute repeater, low tones count the hours, paired low-and-high tones count the quarter-hours, and high tones count the minutes since the last quarter. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes its minute repeater as chiming the exact time on demand when the wearer activates a sliding push button (Minute Repeater Caliber).

For example, at 2:47, a traditional minute repeater would sound two hour strikes, three quarter-hour pairs (45 minutes), then two minute strikes. The listener adds those units to read the time. This is a coded report, not a melody chosen independently of the displayed time.

What the hammers and gongs do

The sound begins when small hammers strike a resonator. Patek Philippe describes steel hammers striking steel-wire gongs wrapped around the movement inside the case; Jaeger-LeCoultre likewise describes hammers and gongs producing distinct sounds for hours, quarters, and minutes (Patek Philippe: The Sound; Jaeger-LeCoultre: Minute Repeater Caliber).

How do repeater types differ?

Repeater names indicate how finely the mechanism reports time. The Patek Philippe Museum catalog describes these types and their different levels of resolution (Patek Philippe Museum catalog).

A minute repeater gives the finest reading of these types, but all are on-demand time signals. The number and pattern of strikes change with the time being reported.

What is the difference between a repeater and an alarm watch?

A repeater is triggered by the wearer to report the current time. An alarm is set in advance and sounds when the watch reaches the selected time. The alarm’s sound does not encode the current hour and minutes; it alerts the wearer that the preset moment has arrived.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Memovox is a documented alarm-watch example. The brand describes a mobile central disc that indicates the selected alarm time. Its 2026 travel-clock announcement characterized the sound as “reminiscent of a traditional school bell”—the manufacturer’s description, not a measured comparison with other alarms (Jaeger-LeCoultre press release, 20 April 2026).

Why repeaters mattered—and how the sound changed

Before electric lighting made it easy to read a dial after dark, a repeater offered a way to learn the time by listening. Early striking watches used bells, but the bell could make a watch bulky. In its house history, Breguet dates its gong-spring innovation to 1783: a coiled steel spring replaced the conventional bell, helping make striking watches thinner and producing what Breguet describes as a more harmonious, discreet tone (Breguet: Invention of the Gong Spring).

A short history of watch chimes and alarms

  • Around 1680: The Patek Philippe Museum catalog attributes an hours-and-quarters repeating mechanism to English horologist Daniel Quare. The early history is not a settled single-inventor story: the Metropolitan Museum’s record of a quarter repeater associated with George Graham notes the contested patent history (Patek Philippe Museum catalog; The Met object record).
  • Around 1750: The museum catalog attributes a minute-striking mechanism to Thomas Mudge, extending the time information a repeater could convey (Patek Philippe Museum catalog).
  • 1783: Breguet dates its gong-spring innovation to this year, replacing the bell arrangement with a thinner resonator suited to repeating watches (Breguet history).
  • 1950: Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the introduction of its Memovox calibre, an alarm-watch mechanism, to 1950 (Memovox history).
  • 1958: The Memovox Parking adapted the alarm as a timed parking reminder, showing how an alarm could serve as a practical countdown alert rather than simply a wake-up signal (Memovox history).
