What is the RM 56-02 Sapphire Tourbillon?
Richard Mille introduced the RM 56-02 in 2014 as a manual-winding tourbillon with hours, minutes and a cable-tension indicator. The brand’s official RM 56-02 historical-model page lists a worldwide edition of 10. Richard Mille announced the model on July 10, 2014, ahead of its planned presentation at Watches & Wonders in Hong Kong, scheduled for September 30 to October 2 that year.
The watch’s unusual construction is more than a transparent case: the movement’s baseplate is suspended within it rather than conventionally fixed in place. Richard Mille describes the system in its July 10, 2014 launch announcement.
How does the suspended movement work?
A single 0.35 mm braided cable supports the grade 5 titanium baseplate. According to Richard Mille, the cable passes through four pulleys at the movement’s corners and six more around its perimeter. A miniature ratchet at 9 o’clock controls cable tension. The result is a movement held within the case by a tensioned cable-and-pulley system, rather than a conventional arrangement of fixed supports.

What the tension indicator shows
An indicator below 12 o’clock is connected to the cable system, allowing the wearer to visually check whether tension is within the manufacturer’s designated norms. Richard Mille describes the indicator’s purpose but does not provide a user maintenance or adjustment procedure in the cited model information; it should not be treated as an invitation to adjust the system yourself.
Where sapphire and titanium are used
The case is made from solid sapphire blocks and has a tripartite construction. The movement’s winding-barrel bridge, tourbillon bridge and center bridges are also sapphire, while the suspended baseplate is grade 5 titanium. The official model page identifies Stettler, a specialist based in Lyss, Switzerland, as responsible for machining and grinding the case.

How difficult is the case and movement to make?
Richard Mille states that machining a single sapphire case takes 40 days of continuous work, and that the movement bridges require 400 hours of machining and finishing. These are figures published by the manufacturer, not independent production measurements. They convey the time-intensive nature of the construction, but do not by themselves establish how many watches were completed or how production was scheduled.
How many RM 56-02 watches were made?
Richard Mille specifies a limited edition of 10 examples worldwide. The figure appears on the official historical-model page and in the brand’s 2014 launch announcement. It is the stated edition size, not a claim about how many examples are currently available for sale.

What did the RM 56-02 cost, and what is it worth now?
Price references must be kept distinct by date and model. Hodinkee reported a launch price of $2,020,000 in its July 10, 2014 article, Introducing The Richard Mille RM 56-02 Tourbillon Sapphire. That is a historical launch figure, not a current retail offer.
In June 2024, Christie’s reported that an RM56-02 AO Tourbillon Sapphire sold for over $3 million in its results material for Richard Mille and F.P. Journe. The AO designation identifies a variant, so this result is not a direct comparable for the standard RM 56-02. The cited sources do not establish a current market value for the standard model. A defensible estimate would need comparable standard-model transactions and details such as condition, provenance, completeness and sale date.
