A watch crystal is the clear cover over the dial. It helps shield the dial from dust, water, and other external forces, but the material also affects how readily the cover scratches, how it handles impact, and what repair may involve. The three common choices—acrylic, mineral glass, and synthetic sapphire—each trade one benefit for another.
What a watch crystal does
The crystal is the transparent cover over the watch face. Along with the rest of the watch’s construction, it helps protect the dial from outside forces such as dust and water. Its material can also affect scratch resistance, impact behavior, clarity, glare, and repair options. A crystal’s material alone does not establish how water-resistant the complete watch is.
How the three materials compare
| Material | Scratch resistance | Impact behavior | Can scratches be polished? | Cost and glare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Acrylic | Relatively soft and prone to scratches, according to Timex’s material guide. | Timex describes it as very shatter-resistant. | Scratches can often be buffed out; confirm the crystal is acrylic before using a polishing product. | No like-for-like price comparison is stated in the cited sources. Coating details are not established for acrylic generally. |
| Mineral glass | More scratch-resistant than acrylic in Timex’s qualitative comparison. | Less shatter-resistant than acrylic, according to Timex; no standardized impact test is provided. | Timex says scratches cannot be buffed out. | No like-for-like price comparison or general glare treatment is stated in the cited sources. |
| Synthetic sapphire | Timex describes it as the most scratch-resistant of these options. | It can shatter under heavy impact; scratch resistance does not make it unbreakable. | The cited sources do not establish a universal polishing method for sapphire damage. | Timex says sapphire costs more than other crystal materials. Orient says its sapphire crystals are typically coated with anti-reflective material to reduce glare; this is specific to Orient, not all sapphire watches. |
These are manufacturers’ qualitative descriptions, not results from a standardized independent test. They do not support a numeric hardness ranking or a precise prediction of how a particular watch will fare in a drop or collision.
Which crystal suits your priorities?
Choose acrylic when polishability and impact behavior matter
Acrylic is relatively soft, so scratches can appear readily. Its practical advantage is that surface scratches can often be buffed out, and Timex describes acrylic as very shatter-resistant. It may suit a wearer who values those traits and accepts that the crystal can show marks during ordinary wear.

- Size - Diameter: 35mm / 1.38" (diameter tolerance is +/-0.05mm.); edge thickness: 1mm / 0.04". Please use a precision caliper to measure the diameter/thickness before purchasing. Do not use tools with low precision such as soft rulers, straight rulers.
- Material - Made of quality sapphire crystal glass, watch lens provide excellent hardness and scratch resistance, durable and long-lasting. The hardness test of sapphire is 9, second only to diamond. The flat round sapphire glass has a smooth surface, adding a touch of sophistication to the watch.
- Features - Clear and transparent, scratch-resistant, wear-resistant, no scratches, polishing and chamfering surface technology. Providing clear dial visibility, ensuring accuracy without distortion. The sapphire glass adopts a flat round design, providing a classic and elegant look to the watch.
- Applications - Sapphire glass lenses are widely used in luxury watches, sports watches, dive watches and fashion watches. These lenses are quality, durable, highly scratch-resistant to withstand rough use, water-resistant, and clear enough to add a touch of elegance to fashion watches.
- Notes - Clean the sapphire glass lens with a soft, lint-free cloth. While sapphire glass is very durable, avoid strong impacts or hitting the watch against hard surfaces to prevent damage. Although sapphire glass is water-resistant, make sure your watch is also water-resistant before placing it in water.
Choose mineral glass as a middle ground
In Timex’s comparison, mineral glass resists scratches better than acrylic but is less shatter-resistant. Timex also says its scratches cannot be buffed out. If it becomes scratched, polishing is not the remedy described by the manufacturer.
Choose sapphire when scratch resistance is the priority
Timex puts synthetic sapphire highest for scratch resistance among these three materials and notes that it costs more. It can still shatter after heavy impact. Some watches add anti-reflective coating to reduce glare: Orient says this is typical of its sapphire crystals, but coating availability depends on the watch.

Check the exact watch before buying or caring for it
Do not guess the material or test it by scratching the surface. Timex says the crystal type appears in the “Specs” section of each product page. Check the exact listing or manufacturer documentation, especially before choosing a care product: the polishing guidance applies to acrylic, not mineral glass.
Clarity and glare can differ among watches, but the cited manufacturer information does not establish a universal clarity ranking for all acrylic, mineral, and sapphire crystals. If glare matters to you, look for an explicit anti-reflective-coating specification for the particular watch rather than assuming that every sapphire crystal has one.

What to do if the crystal is damaged
For an acrylic surface scratch, buffing may be an option once you have confirmed the material. Timex says mineral scratches cannot be buffed out; the available manufacturer sources do not set out a universal repair procedure or replacement part for damaged mineral or sapphire crystals.
Crystal shape and fit are watch-specific. Orient’s support guide discusses common crystal types, but the cited sources do not identify a universal replacement specification, part number, installation procedure, or repair price. For a broken or deeply damaged crystal, contact the watch manufacturer or a watchmaker with the exact model information. Do not assume a generic replacement crystal will fit.
