The Amazfit Balance is still a great smartwatch for daily rough use—only now it’s even better value

At about $120, the original Amazfit Balance remains a powerful everyday smartwatch value. Here is what it can survive, how its battery claims translate, and when newer models are worth the extra cost.

Yes—if you can buy the original Amazfit Balance for about $119.99 in the US, it remains an excellent everyday smartwatch. It combines a bright AMOLED display, dual-band GPS, offline maps, health and sleep tracking, Bluetooth calls, Android and iPhone compatibility, and unusually long battery life. The important qualification is the phrase “rough use”: the Balance is durable enough for commuting, exercise, rain, swimming, travel, and ordinary workplace bumps, but it is not a true rugged watch.

At this price, the 2023 Balance is a value-focused alternative to newer Amazfit models and more expensive Apple, Samsung, Google, and Garmin watches. Its main compromises are tempered glass rather than sapphire, 5 ATM water resistance rather than a higher ruggedness rating, a smaller app ecosystem, and less comprehensive phone integration.

Why the original Amazfit Balance still makes sense in 2026

The Amazfit Balance originally launched in September 2023 at $199.99. Amazfit’s official US listing currently shows it at $119.99, although promotions and availability can change. At that discounted price, its feature bundle is unusually strong: a 1.5-inch AMOLED screen, dual-band positioning, offline maps, Bluetooth calling, extensive wellness tracking, and up to 14 days of claimed typical battery life.

The value does not come from one exceptional specification. It comes from avoiding the usual compromises of cheaper watches. This is not merely an activity tracker with notifications, nor is it a full smartphone replacement. It sits between those categories: more capable than a basic fitness band, but more battery-conscious and less app-heavy than an Apple Watch or Wear OS device.

What “daily rough use” really means

The Balance is suitable for normal active wear, including:

  • Daily commuting, office wear, and travel.
  • Running, cycling, hiking, gym sessions, and outdoor walks.
  • Sweat, rain, snow, splashes, and showering.
  • Swimming and continuous wear for sleep and recovery tracking.
  • Manual work involving occasional incidental bumps.

That is different from genuine rugged-watch use. The aluminum-alloy middle frame, fiber-reinforced polymer underside, tempered-glass display, and 5 ATM water resistance do not put the Balance in the same category as a Garmin Instinct or an Amazfit T-Rex.

Construction, demolition, heavy mechanics, rock climbing, and work involving frequent impacts against metal are better served by a purpose-built rugged watch. The same applies to diving, high-speed water sports, saunas, hot tubs, and prolonged exposure to hot water, solvents, oils, detergents, or extreme heat.

A 5 ATM rating indicates resistance to pressure equivalent to a static depth of 50 meters under the relevant testing standard. It is not a diving recommendation, and real-world movement, heat, chemicals, saltwater, damaged seals, and a cracked screen can all change the outcome. Dry the watch after swimming and avoid treating “5 ATM” as “waterproof.”

Specifications that still matter

Feature Amazfit Balance
Case size 46 × 46 × 10.6 mm
Weight 35 g without the strap
Display 1.5-inch AMOLED, 480 × 480, 323 ppi
Display protection Tempered glass with anti-glare and anti-fingerprint treatment
Case materials Aluminum-alloy middle frame and fiber-reinforced polymer bottom shell
Water resistance 5 ATM
Battery capacity 475 mAh
Positioning Dual-band GPS with six satellite systems
Connectivity Bluetooth 5.0, microphone, and speaker
Charging Magnetic charging; approximately two hours for a full charge

The 46 mm body is large enough for a readable map and data screen, while the 35 g weight keeps it relatively comfortable for sleep tracking. Buyers with smaller wrists should still check the dimensions before ordering.

Battery life: excellent, but “14 days” is a best-case scenario

Amazfit quotes several battery scenarios rather than one universal runtime:

Amazfit Active 2 Premium Smart Watch 1.32" Sapphire Glass, GPS, iOS/Android
  • STYLISH DESIGN, BRIGHT DISPLAY: The sleek stainless steel build blends classic style with workout durability, while the bright 1.32" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.
  • PRECISE HEART RATE AND SLEEP TRACKING: Amazfit's BioTracker technology tracks your heart rate and sleep data with accuracy that previous sensors just can't match.
  • UP TO 10 DAYS OF BATTERY LIFE: With long battery life that lasts up to 10 days with typical use, nightly recharges are a thing of the past.
  • FREE MAPS WITH TURN DIRECTIONS: Stay on-track with free downloadable maps, and get turn-by-turn guidance on-screen or via your Bluetooth headphones. Enjoy ski maps for global resorts, including guidance for cable cars, slopes, and more.
  • FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE GPS TRACKING: 5 satellite positioning systems ensure fast GPS connection and accurate positioning whenever you're out running, walking, cycling or hiking.
Mode or scenario Official claim
Typical use Up to 14 days
Heavy use Up to 7 days
Always-on display Up to 5 days
Battery saver Up to 25 days
Clock mode Up to 50 days
Accurate GPS mode Up to 26 hours
Automatic GPS mode Up to 47 hours
Power-saving GPS mode Up to 52 hours

Always-on display, frequent GPS workouts, phone calls, high notification volume, continuous heart-rate or stress monitoring, bright animated watch faces, voice features, and repeated blood-oxygen or body-composition measurements will reduce endurance. An older unit may also deliver less battery life than a new one as its cell ages.

The practical conclusion is still favorable: do not plan around 14 days if you use the Balance as a serious training watch with the always-on display enabled. But even the manufacturer’s seven-day heavy-use figure is attractive for buyers who do not want nightly charging. The long endurance is one of the clearest reasons to choose the Balance over a richer but more power-hungry smartwatch platform.

Fitness, GPS, and health tracking

The Balance has the hardware for general fitness and outdoor use. It includes dual-band positioning, six satellite systems, an optical heart-rate sensor, blood-oxygen monitoring, sleep and stress tracking, and workout and recovery features. It can also connect to supported Bluetooth accessories such as external heart-rate belts, cycling power meters, and cadence sensors.

That is enough for running, gym training, hiking, cycling, walking, and general wellness. Offline maps and dual-band positioning are particularly useful at this price, although the presence of capable hardware should not be confused with a guarantee of independent best-in-class accuracy.

Health readings should be treated as wellness estimates and trend indicators, not medical measurements. Heart rate, SpO₂, sleep, stress, and body-composition results can be affected by fit, movement, skin contact, hydration, and other conditions. Body-composition readings are especially sensitive to measurement conditions and should not be used for diagnosis.

Serious athletes may prefer Garmin or Coros for more established training ecosystems, structured workouts, training-load workflows, and sport-specific analytics. The Balance remains a sensible choice when the priority is broad activity tracking rather than the deepest possible coaching platform.

Smartwatch features—and their limits

The watch supports notifications, Bluetooth phone calls, a built-in microphone and speaker, calendar and daily-use tools, offline maps, and Zepp OS apps and integrations. Zepp Flow AI features may also be available, but functions can depend on region, language, phone, software version, and account support.

  • GRADE 5 TITANIUM BUILD: This premium smartwatch balances strength with restraint. Formed from Grade 5 titanium, every edge reflects intention and control, delivering a highly durable frame built for daily performance
  • ZEPP APP INTELLIGENCE: Connect training, sleep, nutrition, and daily stress into a continuous view of your adaptation. The app turns complex signals into structured insights, guiding how you train, recover, and progress with clarity and control
  • EFFORTLESS WEARABILITY: Engineered to feel lightweight, the structure carries a quiet confidence on the wrist. This smartwatch is substantial in form yet highly refined, moving effortlessly with you from the office directly to the gym
  • HYROX RACE MODE: Master your HYROX prep with structured plans, Virtual Pace, and an exclusive Training Timer. In-race, it automatically transitions between runs, the Roxzone, and stations while tracking splits and target finish times with precision
  • CONNECTED PERFORMANCE SYSTEM: Support every part of your hybrid routine. This sports watch collects advanced data across heart rate, HRV, sleep, and recovery to create a solid foundation for more informed, precise training decisions over time

The limitation is the platform itself. Zepp OS does not offer the same app selection or phone integration as watchOS or Wear OS. Messaging replies, payments, third-party apps, voice features, and other functions can vary by country, product edition, and phone. Do not assume that every NFC or payment feature works on every US Balance model.

This is the trade-off that makes the battery life possible. The Balance provides the daily essentials without trying to replicate every function of a smartphone on the wrist. Choose Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Pixel Watch, or another Wear OS model if apps, payments, richer messaging, LTE, and deep platform integration matter more than charging frequency.

Software support and updates

To check for firmware updates, use:

  1. Open the Zepp app.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Select Amazfit Balance.
  4. Tap System Update.

Install updates with the watch charged and connected. Zepp’s current operating-system site lists Zepp OS 6 and Balance-series devices, but availability, rollout timing, and individual features can vary by region, software version, and model. It would be too broad to promise that every original Balance unit receives every current Zepp OS feature.

If the watch disconnects, Amazfit recommends updating the Zepp app and phone operating system, restarting the watch, reconnecting Bluetooth, and considering a factory reset if the problem continues. Treat a factory reset as a last resort because it can remove local settings or data.

Read the official Balance user manual or visit Zepp’s current OS information.

Original Balance vs. Balance 2 and Balance 3

The arrival of newer models changes the question from “Is the Balance good?” to “Is the discounted original the right Balance for me?” Amazfit’s current US Balance-series page lists the Balance 2 at $299.99 and the Balance 3 at $369.99, compared with $119.99 for the original Balance when checked.

Model Current listed US price Why choose it Best for
Original Balance $119.99 Low price, AMOLED display, long battery life, GPS, maps, calls, and broad wellness features Everyday wear and value-focused buyers
Balance 2 $299.99 Newer hardware, sapphire-glass positioning, and 10 ATM water resistance in Amazfit’s series materials Buyers prioritizing durability and a newer platform
Balance 3 $369.99 Newest Balance-series hardware, 10 ATM positioning, and newer training features Serious users wanting the latest model and longer product relevance

The original wins on discounted value, not on specifications. Pay more for the Balance 2 or Balance 3 if sapphire or stronger water resistance matters, if you train seriously, if you want newer sensors and features, or if the price gap narrows during a sale. If the newer models cost several times as much, the original remains the more rational choice for ordinary daily use.

Compare the current Balance-series positioning on Amazfit’s US site.

Who should buy it?

  • Buy it if the price is near $120. That is where the combination of AMOLED, GPS, maps, calls, health tracking, and battery life becomes compelling.
  • Buy it if battery life matters more than apps. The Balance is designed for multi-day use rather than nightly charging.
  • Buy it if you use Android or iPhone. It is not locked to one phone platform, though exact functions can differ.
  • Buy it if your rough use is ordinary active wear. Rain, sweat, swimming, travel, and occasional bumps are within the intended use case.
  • Buy it if you want core features without a required paid subscription. Amazfit’s Balance-series information says a paid subscription is not required for core use.

Who should avoid it?

  • People who need a true rugged watch for industrial, high-impact, or extreme outdoor work.
  • Divers and buyers who regularly use a watch in hot tubs, saunas, or high-pressure water.
  • Anyone who specifically needs sapphire glass or a more scratch-resistant display.
  • Buyers who require LTE, extensive third-party apps, advanced messaging, or guaranteed contactless payments.
  • Athletes who need the deepest structured-training and long-term sports analytics ecosystem.
  • People buying at a price close to a newer Balance model or a more capable competing watch.

Alternatives by priority

Choose Garmin if structured training, Garmin Connect, training load, and a mature sports ecosystem matter more than the lowest purchase price. Choose a Garmin Instinct or another purpose-built rugged model if impact resistance and outdoor durability are the priority.

Choose Apple Watch if you use an iPhone and want the tightest Apple integration, richer apps, payments, messaging, and optional cellular features. The trade-off is more frequent charging and no Android compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Samsung Galaxy Watch or another Wear OS watch if you want a richer Android smartwatch experience, more apps, and deeper phone integration. These platforms are less attractive when fortnight-long battery life is the primary goal.

Choose a newer Amazfit Balance if stronger water resistance, newer hardware, more advanced training features, or a longer support horizon justify the much higher price.

Buying advice for a discounted or older unit

  1. Confirm that the selling price is genuinely close to the current official US price rather than an inflated “discount” from an old list price.
  2. Buy from a seller with a clear return policy and warranty. A three-year-old product design may also contain a battery that has already spent time in inventory.
  3. Verify the exact edition and your region’s supported functions, particularly NFC, payments, languages, maps, AI features, and calling.
  4. Check phone compatibility and the current Zepp app requirements before ordering.
  5. Add a tempered-glass screen protector for abrasive work, a replacement strap, and—if you travel—a spare charging cable or puck.
  6. Do not rely on the watch for medical diagnosis or emergency monitoring.

Verdict

The original Amazfit Balance is not the toughest or most advanced Balance-series watch in 2026. Its tempered-glass screen, 5 ATM rating, smaller app ecosystem, and older hardware are real limitations.

But at about $119.99, those limitations are balanced by a large AMOLED display, dual-band GPS, offline maps, calls, broad fitness and wellness tracking, Android and iPhone support, and battery life that remains far better suited to continuous wear than many full smartwatch platforms. It is durable enough for normal active life—not industrial abuse—and that distinction is the key to buying it intelligently.

Buy the original Balance when the price is near $120 and you want maximum everyday capability per dollar. Pay for the Balance 2 or Balance 3 when durability, newer training hardware, or longer-term product relevance matters more than bargain value.
