The Clifton Baumatic’s BM12-1975A was one of 2018’s notable movement launches, pairing a five-day power reserve with silicon components and a stated resistance to magnetic fields of at least 1,500 gauss. Its importance is easiest to defend as both a technical package and a strategic choice: Richemont introduced it in Baume & Mercier, a comparatively accessible group brand. Calling it the most important movement of the year, however, is a judgment—not a ranking established by the available evidence.
What was the Clifton Baumatic movement?
Baume & Mercier launched the Clifton Baumatic collection at SIHH 2018 around its automatic BM12-1975A caliber, developed with ValFleurier and Richemont Group R&D. The movement brought a substantial reserve and several components made from silicon into the brand’s Clifton line. The combination, rather than any single specification, made the launch stand out.
The watch itself was presented in a 40 mm steel case with a date at 3 o’clock, domed sapphire crystal and 50 m water resistance. Baume & Mercier offered the collection with alligator straps or a five-row steel bracelet. These are specifications for the 2018 collection, not a statement about every later Clifton Baumatic reference.
What made the BM12-1975A technically distinctive?
Five days between full winds
Baume & Mercier attributed the 120-hour power reserve to an optimized barrel alloy, its Powerscape escapement and a Twinspir silicon hairspring. In its July 20, 2018 press release, the company stated: “All the Baume & Mercier watches equipped with the Baumatic™ movement have a high-performance 120-hour power reserve, i.e. 5 days.” That is the manufacturer’s published figure; it describes the claimed reserve from a full wind, not a guarantee of identical performance in every watch or wearing pattern.

Silicon in the regulating organ and escapement
Baume & Mercier highlighted silicon in the hairspring and components in the escapement. Hodinkee’s 2018 launch report identifies a silicon balance spring, lever and skeletonized silicon escape wheel. It also describes a freesprung variable-inertia balance and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Hodinkee reported the caliber at 12.5 lignes in diameter and 4.2 mm thick.
Silicon components are relevant here because the brand presented them as part of a movement designed to cope with magnetism and temperature variation. The reported architecture helps explain the technical approach; it does not, by itself, prove a particular real-world accuracy or service interval.

Published accuracy and magnetic-resistance claims
Baume & Mercier stated a daily rate of -4/+6 seconds and magnetic resistance of at least 1,500 gauss in its 2018 material. The company also said that oils selected for their behavior across temperature variation could extend service intervals beyond the usual five-year recommendation. Treat these as manufacturer claims, not an assurance that every owner will see the stated rate or that every watch can safely go longer without servicing.
The distinction between Baumatic models matters: the brand described some versions as COSC-certified chronometers, while publishing the -4/+6-second daily rate for Baumatic watches. The stated rate should not be mistaken for COSC certification of every reference.

What did the launch mean for Baume & Mercier?
The strategic case for the Baumatic’s importance is that Richemont placed a technically ambitious movement in a Baume & Mercier watch rather than reserving it for one of the group’s higher-positioned brands. Hodinkee’s 2018 coverage called the technology advanced in the Richemont context and noted that its debut at Baume & Mercier was unexpected. That made the launch notable beyond its parts list: it suggested that the group was willing to bring this kind of engineering to a broader part of its brand portfolio.
Hodinkee also reported that the movement had been tested for up to ten years of simulated daily use. That is a test-duration claim attributed to Baume & Mercier, not a prediction that a watch will run for ten years without maintenance.

What did the Clifton Baumatic cost at launch?
For a concrete reference, Hodinkee identified the COSC-certified Clifton Baumatic MOA10436 (also written 10436) with a 40 mm steel case, 10.3 mm thickness, sapphire crystals front and back, 50 m water resistance and the BM12-1975A caliber. Its reported US launch price was $2,790, with availability scheduled for September 2018. That is a historical US launch price, not a current asking price or evidence of present availability.

There is a strong case for calling the Baumatic one of the year’s important launches. Its five-day reserve, silicon hairspring and escapement components, and stated 1,500-gauss resistance formed an unusually concentrated technical package for a Baume & Mercier release. The choice of brand gave the launch strategic significance within Richemont as well.

But “most important” depends on the yardstick. Technical contribution, the price and market segment reached, and the movement’s longer-term influence are different measures. The sources documenting the Baumatic support the technical and brand-strategy arguments; they do not provide a comprehensive comparison of every significant movement launched in 2018 or establish how later Richemont movements carried this approach forward. So the fair verdict is that the Clifton Baumatic was a consequential and attention-worthy 2018 launch—not a proven number-one movement of the year.
