The Beloved and Hated Pierce Chronographe Cal. 134: How Its Unusual Clutch Works

The Pierce Cal. 134 combines a column-wheel chronograph with an unusual axial vertical friction clutch. Here is how it works, what “four-in-one” means, and what to consider when evaluating one.

The Pierce Chronographe Cal. 134 stands out for an unusual combination: a hand-wound, column-wheel chronograph and an axial vertical friction clutch that drives its central seconds hand. That design is ingenious, but it also makes condition and specialist service important considerations for collectors. The watch’s exact production dates and present-day market value are not firmly established.

What makes the Pierce Cal. 134 different?

Pierce was founded in Biel in 1883. Specialist histories say the company developed its own 13-line chronograph calibers, including the 130 and 134, in the early 1930s after problems with suppliers. The sources differ on the chronology, however, and the Watch Movements Archive says the Cal. 134 production period is unknown, with production around 1949 only a probability. It is safer to describe the 134 as a vintage Pierce in-house chronograph than to assign it a definitive launch year. Montres Anciennes’ Pierce history and the Watch Movements Archive entry provide the respective historical and movement references.

The archive lists the Cal. 134 as manual wind, with 17 jewels, a column wheel, central chronograph seconds and a 60-minute counter. An auction description also names a lever escapement, monometallic balance and flat hairspring; those are descriptive claims, not an assessment of any individual watch’s condition. Aste Bolaffi’s catalogue entry gives that additional description.

How does the axial vertical friction clutch work?

A chronograph needs a coupling to connect its elapsed-time mechanism to the running train when timing begins. In the Cal. 134, the coupling is described as an axial vertical friction clutch: the connection is made on the same axis as the central chronograph seconds, through friction rather than the familiar toothed horizontal clutch arrangement. Pierce presented the approach as a way to simplify the mechanism. Fratello’s Cal. 134 overview discusses the design and its collecting reputation.

A collector restoration account describes a rubber washer or joint as the friction element, while another account identifies that element as a service concern. The detail explains both the appeal and the caution: an unusual solution can be elegant, but its performance depends on the condition of a specific part. The sources do not establish that every surviving watch has the same component condition, or that a replacement is readily available. See Chronovintage’s restoration account.

What is the difference between the Pierce Cal. 130 and Cal. 134?

The 130 and 134 are related members of Pierce’s in-house 13-line chronograph family, but their names should not be treated as interchangeable. Collector reporting describes differences in the minute-counter mechanism and friction clutch, as well as monopusher and two-pusher versions. The specific construction details are less securely documented than the broad family relationship.

  • Minute counter: The collector account says the 134 uses a large brass wheel associated with the minute-counter cam and advances its minute counter once per minute. It contrasts this with a 130 counter described as running continuously.
  • Column wheel: A six-column versus nine-column distinction is also attributed to a forum contributor in the collector article. Treat that as attributed collector information, not settled primary documentation.
  • Pusher arrangement: Both monopusher and dual-pusher forms are reported; confirm the configuration of the specific watch rather than assuming it from the caliber name.

These distinctions are reported in Fratello’s collector overview; detailed variant specifications should be approached with appropriate caution.

What does “four-in-one” mean on a Pierce chronograph?

The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) describes the Pierce 130/134/134D as a “four-in-one chronograph,” listing subsidiary seconds, stopwatch, telemeter, tachometer and a timeout feature. A collector account describes the marketing functions as timekeeper, stopwatch, telemeter and tachymeter. The phrase is marketing shorthand for the watch’s timekeeping and chronograph functions together with its measuring scales; it does not mean the watch contains four separate movements. See the AWCI’s June 2006 Q&A and Fratello’s overview.

  • Tachymeter: A tachymeter relates elapsed time to speed or another rate, depending on the scale and how it is used.

These are analog measuring aids, not a claim that a vintage watch functions as a modern precision instrument.

Is the Cal. 134 hard to service?

Its friction element is a specific point to discuss with a watchmaker familiar with vintage chronographs. A collector also recounts a watchmaker declining a different Cal. 130 because parts were missing or broken. That is an anecdote about one movement, not proof that all Cal. 134 watches are unserviceable. The available accounts do not establish current availability or compatibility of replacement friction parts.

Before buying or commissioning work on a particular watch, ask for:

  • A clear photograph of the movement and confirmation of the caliber identification.
  • A demonstration that the chronograph starts, stops and resets correctly.
  • Documentation of competent recent service, if available.
  • An inspection for missing, damaged or non-original parts.
  • A watchmaker’s assessment of whether the friction element has been inspected or replaced, and an estimate based on the movement’s actual condition.

A general set of watch repair tools is not a substitute for Cal. 134-specific parts or the experience needed to work on a vintage chronograph. A qualified assessment is more useful than assuming a watch is either easy to repair or beyond repair.

What is known about the Cal. 134’s value?

A current, robust market statistic is not established by the cited sources. Fratello’s author, Tomas Rosputinsky, mentioned a $1,000–$1,500 range in an article published on 20 January 2022; that is a dated contextual observation, not a current valuation or a dependable price guide. A specific watch’s completeness, condition, service history and originality need to be assessed individually.
