Fratello’s April 2023 second installment of its microbrand GMT guide selected eight watches listed below $2,500, from compact traveler GMTs to deep-water caller GMTs and an unusual display design. It is a dated editorial selection by Vincent Deschamps—not a current price or stock check, a fresh comparative test, or a complete market ranking. The most useful distinction is how each watch handles time zones: a traveler GMT lets you jump the local hour hand, while a caller GMT is generally set by adjusting the GMT hand.
How to read this eight-watch selection
The watches below are the eight models in Deschamps’s April 20, 2023 article. The listed prices, specifications, and availability remarks are what Fratello reported at that date; they should not be treated as present-day offers or independently rechecked specifications. Confirm the exact reference, current price, shipping costs, and availability with the manufacturer before buying.
In the movement column, “traveler” describes the Miyota 9075 models in the article, whose local 12-hour hand jumps in one-hour increments. “Caller” describes the Sellita SW330-2 examples: these are not the jumping-local-hour format. The Formex uses a COSC-certified Sellita SW300-2, while Isotope’s article listing gives two possible caliber names rather than one confirmed caliber.

Which GMT works best for travel?
Traveler GMT: jump the local hour
The Jack Mason Strat-o-timer, Traska Venturer GMT, and Boldr Odyssey Freediver GMT use Miyota 9075 movements in the article’s list. In this traveler-style arrangement, the local 12-hour hand can be advanced or moved back in one-hour increments while the GMT hand tracks another time zone. That makes it convenient to reset local time after landing without losing the reference time shown by the GMT hand.
Among these three, the dated dimensions point to quite different fits: Traska is the smallest and thinnest listed, Jack Mason sits in the middle, and Boldr is the largest, with its stated thickness excluding the crystal. Consider lug-to-lug as well as diameter when comparing how a watch will sit on your wrist; the numbers are not a substitute for trying the exact current reference.

Caller GMT: track another zone from home
The Christopher Ward C65 Aquitaine GMT, Monta Skyquest, and Islander Republic GMT are listed with the Sellita SW330-2. These are caller-style GMTs rather than jumping-local-hour watches. They can suit someone who wants to keep home or business time visible while adjusting the GMT indication for a second zone, but frequent timezone changes are less convenient than with a traveler GMT.
Formex is a distinct mechanical option: Fratello reported a COSC-certified Sellita SW300-2 in the Reef GMT, not the 9075 or SW330-2 calibers. The article describes Isotope’s GMT 0º by its unusual central tear-drop-shaped element and rotating scale disc, and lists either a Swisstech or Landeron GMT caliber. It does not establish a single caliber for every version, so verify the exact reference if movement identity matters to you.

Fit, water resistance, and construction differences
The reported diameters run from 38.5 mm for the Traska to 44 mm for the Boldr; reported lug-to-lug lengths run from 44.7 mm for the Isotope to 52 mm for the Boldr. Thickness ranges from 10 mm for Traska to 14.2 mm for Isotope, though Boldr’s 12.5 mm figure excludes its crystal. These are the April 2023 article’s figures, not a guarantee that current variants share them.
For the six models with a rating reported in the article, water resistance spans 200 m to 300 m. Jack Mason, Christopher Ward, and Islander are listed at 200 m; Boldr, Monta, and Formex at 300 m. Fratello did not state a rating there for Traska or Isotope, so no conclusion about their water resistance should be inferred from this list.

Other details distinguish the watches beyond movement and dimensions. The article reports sapphire crystals for Jack Mason (front and exhibition), Boldr, Monta, and Islander; a box sapphire for Traska; and an exhibition back alongside 300 m water resistance for Formex. Islander’s bezel is bidirectional with a sapphire insert. These are the article’s descriptions, so check the exact current specification before relying on a particular material or construction.

The lug widths reported by Fratello help identify replacement strap sizes, but width alone does not guarantee compatibility with a watch’s end links, spring bars, or case shape.

Which of the eight is the best fit?
- For a compact traveler GMT: The Traska Venturer is the smallest and thinnest of the listed models, at 38.5 mm diameter and 10 mm thickness, and uses the Miyota 9075. Its April 2023 price was reported as $695.
- For a larger, dive-oriented traveler GMT: The Boldr Odyssey pairs the Miyota 9075 with a reported 300 m rating and comes with both a bracelet and an FKM rubber strap, but its 44 mm diameter and 52 mm lug-to-lug make it the largest listed option.
- For a 200 m-rated, bracelet-focused choice: Jack Mason’s article-listed details include a 40 mm case, sapphire on both the front and exhibition back, quick-release bracelet bars, and a toolless micro-adjust clasp.
- For caller GMTs with different priorities: Christopher Ward offers reported leather, rubber, and steel configurations; Monta combines a 300 m rating with a bracelet micro-adjust clasp; Islander pairs a 200 m rating with a bidirectional bezel and sapphire insert.
- For more unusual construction or display: Formex stands out in this group for its reported COSC-certified movement and 300 m rating despite an exhibition back; Isotope’s 0º uses a distinctive disc-and-tear-drop GMT display.
These are ways to sort the 2023 selection, not a current head-to-head verdict. Deschamps said he chose models he had a chance to experience in person, while acknowledging that the market offered more choices than one article could cover.
What the original list leaves outside its eight picks
Fratello’s honorable mentions were Oak & Oscar Humboldt GMT, Foliot Stratonaut GMT, Zelos Horizon GMT, Farer GMT models, Phoibos Voyager GMT, and Venezianico Neireide GMT. They were leads rather than evaluated picks in that article; the author said he had not handled all of them. A separate catalog-style ranking later named Batavi Watches Amsterdam Geograaf as its leading under-$1,000 pick, but its different catalog-based criteria do not update or validate Fratello’s historical prices or selection.
