The History of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso: From Polo to Art Deco Icon

Conceived in 1930 to protect a watch during polo and launched in 1931, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso turned a practical case design into an enduring Art Deco icon.

Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the Reverso’s conception to 1930 and its launch to 1931. Its swivelling case was devised to turn the dial inward and protect it from the knocks of polo, but the solution also created one of watchmaking’s most recognizable rectangular designs.

Why the Reverso was conceived

The origin story begins with a practical problem: how could a wristwatch survive the force and contact of a polo match without giving up the refinement expected of a dress watch? Jaeger-LeCoultre’s account places the challenge in India in 1930, where polo players wanted a way to protect their watch crystals during play. The company credits businessman César de Trey, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Jacques-David LeCoultre, and designer René-Alfred Chauvot with developing the response.

The distinction between idea and arrival matters: Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the conception to 1930, while the Reverso’s case patent and commercial launch came in 1931. The company’s history presents the design as an answer to the players’ request; it is a brand account rather than an independently established archival consensus. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso history

How the swivelling case worked—and shaped the design

The case slides out of its cradle and turns over, placing the dial against the wrist and the solid caseback outward. During polo, that simple reversal puts a protective surface where the crystal and dial would otherwise face impacts. The case does not make a watch indestructible; it provides a way to cover the dial when the wearer wants it shielded.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The mechanism’s practical purpose gave the Reverso its defining silhouette. A rectangular case, horizontal gadroons across the ends, and triangular lugs form a coherent Art Deco design rather than decoration added after the fact. The geometry makes the watch legible as a Reverso even when its dial is hidden. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes the model as “the synthesis of form and function” on its official history page.

Early Reversos broadened the original formula

The Reverso did not remain a single fixed configuration. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s press account says variations appeared within a year, including different indices, dial colors, gold cases, and smaller formats. These examples show the design being adapted across looks and sizes early on; they are selected milestones, not a complete year-by-year catalogue. Jaeger-LeCoultre press account

1934: black dials and a forward-looking phrase

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Collectibles feature reports that the 1934 Spécialités Horlogères catalogue described black dials as “the dial of the future.” It is a phrase attributed to the period catalogue, not to a named individual. Jaeger-LeCoultre Collectibles

1938: the Central Seconds

The same Collectibles material identifies a 1938 Reverso Central Seconds, later nicknamed the Doctor’s Reverso. It is a useful reminder that early history includes more than one dial treatment or display style, though the brand’s feature does not establish a comprehensive chronology of all models.

The 1991 Soixantième and the move into complications

Jaeger-LeCoultre identifies the Reverso Soixantième, introduced in 1991, as a turning point: it was the first Reverso to feature mechanical complications, according to the brand. That shift expanded the watch beyond a straightforward time display while retaining the case architecture that made the original distinctive. The company’s press history marks it as a milestone, not as the start of every later complication in a complete model-by-model sequence. Jaeger-LeCoultre press account

The Reverso as a platform for watchmaking and decoration

The reversible case creates an obvious second surface: the outward-facing back can be left plain, personalized, or treated as a decorative canvas. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes the collection’s use of techniques including enamel, engraving, and gemstone decoration. These métiers change the character of the reverse without changing the original idea of turning the dial out of harm’s way.

Technical evolution has been broad as well. Jaeger-LeCoultre says the Reverso has housed more than 50 different calibres; the collection page gives no publication year for that figure, so it should be read as the brand’s undated statement rather than a dated count. The range illustrates how a case conceived around protection has accommodated changing movements and presentations. Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso collection

What the Reverso’s history establishes

The most secure outline in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s account is the progression from a 1930 polo-related conception to a 1931 patent and launch, followed by early variations, the 1938 Central Seconds, and the 1991 Soixantième milestone. Across those changes, the reversible case remained the design’s central proposition: a functional shield that became an enduring Art Deco form and a second face for watchmaking and decoration.
