Fratello Watches’ 2022 selection of the best special editions included ten watches distinguished by unusual design, materials, collaborations or technical ideas. It was an editor’s list—not a market-wide ranking—and Fratello described it as a conversation starter. Its defining criterion was that each watch was outside regular production and celebrated an occasion, collaboration, distinct design or technical solution. The models, prices and availability below reflect Jorg Weppelink’s article published December 9, 2022, not current stock or resale values.
What counted as a special edition?
Weppelink’s selection focused on watches that were not regular-production pieces and had a reason to exist beyond a different dial color: an anniversary or other occasion, a collaboration, an unusual design, or a technical distinction. That scope includes both relatively wearable limited editions and high-complication showcases. The list does not claim that these were objectively the ten best watches released worldwide in 2022.
The ten watches on Fratello’s 2022 list
1. Cartier Privé Tank Chinoise
Cartier’s Tank Chinoise appeared in six versions: three open-worked models and three regular editions in yellow gold, pink gold and platinum. Fratello reported that each regular limited edition was made in 150 pieces and had sold out by the time of its December 2022 article. Weppelink singled out the platinum version. Those are historical details from the article, not a current availability report.
2. Zenith Chronomaster Original Limited Edition for Hodinkee
This 38 mm steel chronograph pairs an opaline salmon dial with three gray counters and Zenith’s El Primero caliber 3600. Fratello reported a 300-piece edition, a €9,500 price and a sellout within hours. The Hodinkee collaboration and restrained case size give it a different character from the larger, more technically elaborate watches elsewhere on the list.

3. A. Lange & Söhne Odysseus in Titanium
Fratello presented the titanium Odysseus as the brand’s first titanium watch. It combines an ice-blue brass dial with a titanium bracelet. The 2022 article reported 250 pieces, a price of €55,000 and a weight 43% lower than the steel version. That weight comparison is the article’s reported figure, not a present-day independent measurement.
4. Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic
The Octo Finissimo Automatic in sandblasted titanium was notable for its slim 40 mm case, which the article gives as 5.15 mm thick. Inside is Bulgari’s in-house BVL 138 movement, with a reported 65-hour power reserve. Fratello listed an edition of 200 and an article-era price of €14,800. Its appeal in this selection is the combination of a distinctive architectural case and a technically demanding thin profile.

- Vostok Amphibian Special Edition 740 Case Watch. Classic-style Mens wrist watch. Russian Time Zones Bezel
- Unpretentious and reliable, shockproof, having a large power reserve, working in a different temperature and in low light conditions thanks to luminous dial details. The hands and time markers are covered with Luminova and glow softly in the dark.
- 2416B Vostok mechanical automatic movement. Date window. Shockproof.
- 200 m (20Bar) water resistance
- Diameter: 41mm , thickness – 15mm. Lug size - 18 mm. Case made of stainless steel. Crystal (glass) – acrylic. Bracelet made of stainless steel. Bi-directional graduated bezel.
5. Airain Type 20 Vert Militaire Flyback Chronograph Limited Edition
This military-green take on the Type 20 has a 39.5 mm steel case and a manually wound La Joux-Perret flyback chronograph movement. Fratello reported 134 pieces at €2,800 and said the edition sold out quickly. The flyback function and military-inspired design make it one of the list’s more direct, purpose-led chronographs.
6. Ressence × Alain Silberstein “Carpe Diem”
Ressence’s Type 1 display meets Alain Silberstein’s distinctive dial design in this collaboration. Fratello describes a 41 mm Grade 5 titanium case and Ressence’s ROCS 1 display system. The article reported 36 pieces at CHF 22,500 excluding tax. Its defining feature is the combination of Ressence’s display approach with Silberstein’s visual language, rather than a conventional hands-and-markers layout.

7. Omega Speedmaster Chrono Chime
The 45 mm Speedmaster Chrono Chime is a Sedna Gold chiming chronograph powered by caliber 1932. Fratello reported 326.20 grams of gold across the case, bracelet and movement, with a price of CHF 450,000 excluding VAT. Weppelink characterized its elapsed-time chime as a first in the watch world; that distinction is the article’s description. Among the ten selections, this is the most overtly focused on an elaborate mechanical complication and precious-metal construction.
8. Grand Seiko Kodo Constant-force Tourbillon
The Kodo brings a constant-force mechanism and tourbillon together in an integrated movement, housed in a case combining platinum and Brilliant Hard Titanium. Fratello reported a 20-piece edition priced at €370,000. Its place on the list rests on the technical pairing and unusual case materials, rather than on a collaboration or a familiar model redesigned for a special occasion.

9. M.A.D.1 RED
The M.A.D.1 RED took the earlier M.A.D.Edition concept into production; Fratello noted that the earlier version had been available only to MB&F’s friends and family. The article discussed the modified Miyota 821A movement and reported a CHF 2,900 price. Its special-edition story is therefore as much about widening access to the M.A.D. design as it is about the red colorway.
10. Nivada Grenchen × Worn & Wound Chronomaster Valjoux 72
This collaboration was built around 20 restored Valjoux 72 movements, making the movement supply the limit on the run. Fratello reported that 20 watches went on sale for US$6,900 on December 8, 2022, and sold quickly. The restored vintage chronograph calibers distinguish this edition from the newer movements and contemporary complications found in other picks.

What the list says about 2022’s special editions
The picks show how broad the label can be. Some editions drew their identity from a collaboration or a design signature, as with the Zenith, Ressence and Nivada Grenchen. Others emphasized materials and form, including the titanium Odysseus and Octo Finissimo. The Omega and Grand Seiko leaned on technical ambition, while the Cartier and Airain revisited established designs through a distinct edition. The shared thread is not price, complication or scarcity alone; it is a clearly defined departure from regular production.
