Why Swatch mattered in the 1980s
Swatch Group dates the first Swatch to 1983. Its corporate history describes a low-cost Swiss-made “second watch” made from 51 components and assembled on automated production lines. The Museum of Modern Art records the 1983 GB100 and GK100 Jellyfish and describes the debut line as twelve colors, including transparent and black-and-white designs.
These watches made a strong case for treating a watch as an expressive accessory as well as a timekeeper. That history helps explain why buyers may choose one for its design or personal memories rather than for rarity alone.

How to compare the shortlisted watches

Jelly Fish GK100
MoMA records the Jellyfish GK100 as a 1983 watch and describes the transparent design as part of Swatch’s debut line. Fratello also discusses it as an early transparent Swatch. Inspect clear photographs for discoloration and check the reference and components. The production and historical price claims in the specialist guide are not independently confirmed by the museum record.

Keith Haring designs
Fratello describes four designs unveiled in 1986 in connection with Haring’s Pop Shop. These watches suit buyers interested in artist collaborations. Confirm which design is being offered and ask what evidence supports its originality; the guide does not provide a dependable valuation.
Kiki Picasso GZ008
Fratello describes the Kiki Picasso collaboration as a 1984 project with 140 different executions. It is aimed at experienced art-watch collectors. The guide’s quoted price range is dated 2021, not current guidance. For a high-value claim, seek provenance and expert review rather than relying on a seller’s description alone.
Condition, originality, and buying checks

Service, parts, and water resistance
Swatch’s US after-sales guidance describes routes for batteries, straps, buckles, battery covers, and service. It does not promise that every part or repair is available for every vintage reference or in every country.
