For swimming, sweaty workouts, or frequent water exposure, start with a watch-compatible rubber or silicone strap. For everyday summer wear, nylon or NATO may be a fabric-style alternative; choose based on feel and how much cleaning and drying you’re willing to do. There is no universal winner: the right strap depends on your activity, your watch’s attachment system, and the specific band’s care instructions.
Choose by how you’ll wear the watch
Daily wear, vigorous exercise, and swimming place different demands on a strap. Before choosing a material, decide how much sweat, water, sunscreen, and soap it is likely to encounter. Then check the exact strap maker’s directions for those uses.
- Workouts or wet activity: Consider a compatible rubber or silicone strap and confirm that the particular strap is intended for your activity.
- Everyday wear: Nylon or NATO is a fabric-style option if you like its feel and appearance and can clean and dry it after exposure.
- Casual wear: Leather or suede may suit the look, but manufacturer guidance for named products can exclude vigorous activity or water.

Check fit before buying a replacement strap
Straps are not universal. A band that looks right may not attach securely or fit your watch. Check the watch model, the lug width or proprietary attachment system, and the strap’s stated compatibility before ordering. If the manufacturer specifies a particular connector or compatible models, use that information rather than relying on appearance alone.
Clean and dry the band after summer exposure
Sweat, water, soap, sunscreen, and lotions can leave residue; Apple notes that these substances can contribute to skin irritation. Keep the watch and band clean and dry, and follow the care instructions for both the watch and strap. Garmin recommends cleaning its wearable, accessory band, and charging port a couple of times a week and after activities. That schedule is Garmin guidance for its products, not a universal rule for every watch.
