Standouts reported by watch publications included Josh Gad’s two-tone Chopard Alpine Eagle, Spike Lee’s gold Rolex GMT-Master, Rami Malek’s Cartier Pasha and Antonio Banderas’s titanium Bulgari Octo Finissimo. This is an editorial selection for visual distinction, watch interest and styling—not a ranked or authenticated list.
What watches stood out at the 2020 Oscars?
The 92nd Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 9, 2020. The watches below were identified in event coverage by Time+Tide, WatchPro and Hodinkee. These are publication identifications based on red-carpet reporting and photography, not manufacturer authentication.
Gold, two-tone and formal choices
- Josh Gad — Chopard Alpine Eagle. Time+Tide identified a two-tone steel and 18k gold version. The combination brought a strong contrast to formal attire without relying on an all-gold look.
- Spike Lee — Rolex GMT-Master. Time+Tide described an 18k Everose gold example with a two-color “Root-Beer” ceramic bezel. Lee’s purple-and-yellow outfit, which included the number 24 as a tribute to Kobe Bryant, was a separate part of the night’s visual story.
- Tonya Lewis Lee — Cartier Roadster. Time+Tide identified an 18k yellow-gold Roadster.
- Rami Malek — Cartier Pasha. Time+Tide reported a yellow-gold Pasha on a leather strap, worn with an all-black tuxedo. The report noted the choice as a departure from Malek’s more familiar Tank styling.
- Omar Sharif Jr. — Bulgari-Bulgari chronograph. Time+Tide identified a stainless-steel chronograph paired with a tuxedo.
Chronographs and sportier designs
- Mark Consuelos — Rolex Daytona 6263. Time+Tide identified a vintage black-dial Daytona with a Bakelite bezel. The same roundup described Ryan Seacrest’s steel Daytona 6263 as having a silver dial and black bezel; Hodinkee also identified Seacrest’s watch as a 6263. These are vintage references, not evidence of current production or availability.
- Oscar Isaac — Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition. WatchPro named this specific edition. The identification makes it one of the most precise model callouts in the coverage, but does not establish present-day stock.
- Colin Jost — TAG Heuer Monaco. WatchPro called it a Calibre 11, while Hodinkee identified reference CAW211P.FC6356. Both described a blue-dial Monaco; the reports do not establish whether their different levels of specificity reflect a disagreement about the watch.
- Adam Driver — Breitling Premier Automatic 40. WatchPro identified a steel case, silver dial and black alligator strap.
- Taika Waititi — Panerai. WatchPro said the watch was assumed to be a blue-dial Luminor Due, while Hodinkee identified it as a PAM 728. Because the reports differ on the model label, Panerai is the more careful identification without a closer independent assessment.
Understated and slim profiles
- Alfie Allen — Omega De Ville Prestige. WatchPro identified a blue-dial example and characterized it as a classic dressier choice rather than a sports watch styled for formalwear.
- Antonio Banderas — Bulgari Octo Finissimo. WatchPro described an ultra-slim titanium automatic, and Hodinkee also identified the automatic titanium version. The agreement makes this a well-supported publication identification, though not independent authentication.
A qualified Rolex identification
- Timothée Chalamet — Rolex, likely a Day-Date. Hodinkee reported that Chalamet described the watch on social media as a “Rose Gold Presidential” and assessed it as most likely a Day-Date. The exact model should therefore be treated as a likely identification, not a confirmed reference.
Why these watches made the selection
The most interesting choices span several visual and watchmaking contrasts: yellow or Everose gold against steel and titanium; vintage chronographs alongside contemporary limited editions; and traditional dress styling alongside sportier designs worn with formal clothes. The collection also shows that “red-carpet watch” does not mean a single type of watch: a slim titanium automatic, a gold Pasha on leather and a Daytona chronograph each make a different impression.
There is no common scoring system in the cited coverage, and the reports do not establish comparable prices or a defensible ranking across these watches. “Best” here means notable examples selected for their reported design, model interest and styling—not a claim that one objectively outranked the rest.

What the reports establish—and what they do not
Time+Tide’s roundup presents its highlights “In no particular order.” WatchPro and Hodinkee add watch-publication reporting, but these identifications should not be confused with official confirmation from the brands. Differences in specificity matter: Colin Jost’s Monaco is called a Calibre 11 by one report and given a reference by another, while Taika Waititi’s Panerai has conflicting model labels.
Elton John’s watch is another example where restraint matters: WatchPro said it was still trying to confirm a possible Franck Muller identification and could not locate the exact example. It is not included as a definitive model in this selection.

Rolex’s Oscars connection
Rolex’s 2020 media note said the company had been the Academy’s “Exclusive Watch” and an Oscars sponsor since 2017. That is Rolex’s own dated statement; sponsorship is useful event context, but it does not show why any particular attendee wore a Rolex or establish a relationship between the brand and an individual’s watch choice.
